Dad leaves baby with pit bull

Palm Coast - A man has been charged with child neglect after allegedly leaving his 10-month-old baby in the care of his pit bull while he went to a bar.

The Flagler County Sheriff's Office says 41-year-old James Irvine of Palm Coast was arrested early on Saturday.

The Daytona Beach News-Journal  reports the child's mother called police after learning Irvine left the baby alone while he went out to drink. She was at work at the time.

A police report says he told her the "pit bull was watching the baby". The child was in his bedroom with the door shut when she came home. A deputy reported the dog was sitting outside the room.

It's not known whether Irvine has an attorney.

Mind you, I think some animals could look better after humans can than humans can after their own.

Had to read this twice and I still don't believe it. How the hell can u leave a baby with a dog. Thank God nothing happened to the little one.

Dogs don't rape babies to get rid of AIDS. Put that in your pipe and smoke it

If the child was able to walk and talk, it would be a totally different story. I would even trust a pit bull before I trusted some people with my children. But doing this so he could go drinking, is totally unacceptable, he should loose all rights to the child.

What would make it a different story if the child was able to walk and talk?

I am surprised the policeman made it out in one piece. That said: dogs rescue children from drowning and other threats on a daily basis. I'd say he was safer with the dog than with the dad.

Pit bulls where originally named "Nanny Dogs" they where used to protect children and look after then. Bad people have given them the bad rep they have today.

  • zelda.dickson - 2012-12-07 21:46

The pitbull was outside the closed bedroom guarding the child. Does a better job than the father.

I personally feel that if the dog poses no harm to the kid then why should he be arrested?

      delish7564 - 2012-12-07 23:33

Are you being funny? Of course he should be arrested, he left a 10 month old baby without any human supervision just so he could go to the Pub. Totally unacceptable not to mention illegal! Just as well the dog was there.

  • nicole.du.toit.88 - 2012-12-08 00:47

The fact that the dog is a Pitbull is completely irrelevant. Terrible journalism!

  • onkabetse.keboneilwe - 2012-12-08 05:01

  • dwayne.dick.5 - 2012-12-08 06:54

What seems to be the problem here, the dog was guarding the baby, so ?

  • leon.olivier.92 - 2012-12-08 08:50

Urg...I can see it already. Somewhere there is the name Buba and yes mom is upset. Upset dad got caught. Freaking idiot !

  • mohapeloa.mohapeloa - 2012-12-08 10:17

ok, so it's ok for the dog to stand guard at the door. It's all good I mean, the 10 month old baby can change their own nappies, prepare their own milk bottle and feed, rock themselves to sleep, etc. It's all good, as long as there's a guard at the door.

Seriously some of these comments are really stupid to say the least. No sane parent would leave a child with a dog whether it's safe or not. If he was craving that freakin beer so much why didn't he make other arrangements like getting a nanny or something. Or if he loves his damn bottle so much, why in the hell didn't he use a condom to prevent having kids. Just goes to show parenting is so NOT for everyone & judging by some of these comments some of you need serious parenting classes...nxa!

so how come the headline wants to create the impression the PB did something wrong? What has the breed got to do with it anyway? Would they have named a poodle for instance?
