Rosario - The final death toll rose to 21 in an explosion at an apartment building in central Argentina as the bodies of the last missing people were identified, officials said on Tuesday.

Rescuers pulled the last three bodies from the rubble of the 10-storey building that partially collapsed in a gas explosion on 6 August.

Search efforts were called off after all of the people previously listed as missing were accounted for.

Two survivors had managed to climb out of the rubble last week, Santa Fe province Health Minister Miguel Cappiello said.

Municipal health secretary Leonardo Caruana said nine victims were still being treated in hospital. About 60 people were injured in the accident.

Two gas workers who had been repairing lines inside the building were detained by authorities. Witness reports suggested that one of the men fled the site during the leak while the other sought help, officials said.

Rosario, Argentina's third most populous city, is about 300km north-west of Buenos Aires.
