Jarkarta - The death toll in a mudslide in Indonesia's Central Java province rose to 42 on Monday, while 66 people were still missing, police said on Monday.

More than 2 000 people were involved in the search for the missing after the landslide late on Friday in Jemblung village of Banjarnegara district, officials said.

More bodies were found on Monday morning, bringing the death toll to 42, said Rini Muliawati, the head of the provincial police health department.

She said all but four of the dead victims had been identified.

The landslide, which followed three days of heavy rain, also buried 8ha of farmland and 1km of a river and displaced more than 2 000.

Landslides caused almost two-thirds of disaster-related deaths in Indonesia in 2014, said Sutopo Nugroho, a spokesperson for the National Disaster Management Agency.

About 41 million Indonesians are exposed to the danger of landslides, he said.

"People who are vulnerable to the threat of landslides generally have no means of protecting themselves," he said.

"They rely on subsistence farming on hilly slopes," he added.
