Dubai cops rev up with Lamborghinis

2013-04-12 20:03

Dubai - The city that boasts the world's tallest building is equipping its police with $400 000 Lamborghini sports cars, that Dubai's deputy police chief says are in keeping with the Gulf capital's image.

They also go fast, since according to the website of Lamborghini, an affiliate of the Volkswagen Group, all the Italian company's cars reach 100kph in well under six seconds.

Major General Khamis Mattar Al Mazeina said that a fleet of Lamborghinis, each estimated to cost around $400 000, had been obtained by the Dubai police for use at main tourist sites.

"The aim is to reflect the reputation of the emirate and the high stature it achieved," Mazeina said.

"It will also help promote tourism and showcase the security role the Dubai police plays in safeguarding the city," he added.

The vehicles will be deployed at the downtown area near the world's tallest building, the Burj Khalifa tower, the Mohammed bin Rashid Boulevard as well as the café - and restaurant-lined walk of the Jumeirah Beach Residence, one of the most popular waterfront developments in Dubai.

Photos of the vehicles published in local media in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) showed a green-and-white vehicle decorated with the Dubai police insignia on the front hood.

Dubai, one of seven emirates in the UAE federation, is staging a recovery from the financial crisis it suffered during the global financial crisis in 2009.

The emirate recently announced several major projects, including a huge tourism and retail development with the largest shopping mall in the world.

Tacky. While all the poor immigrant slaves live in poverty to build this "dream" city. It's a vulgar display of wealth with no culture or natural beauty.

      George Pito - 2013-04-12 21:05

Not the Nurse again. Have you ever been there or worked there. I left my wallet on a counter and came back after several hours and nothing taken. The beauty is they dont have water and it is in abundance, Wifi for free nobody hacks. Must admit missed my beer and hardly saw any animals. Then I was a not so poor immigrant they pay well, no tax. Building technology excellent and they so called poor immigrants had aircons in there flee market setup and gave me free water. I never saw I a begger or a car watch. To the oil story do yourself a favour and google at Africa with this regard.

      Gerhard Nel - 2013-04-12 21:06

What slaves? It is contracted labour, not immigrants and if they want to quit and go back to their home countries where they don't have jobs, they can go anytime. Their employers must even pay their tickets home + gratuity.

      Nurse Helenk - 2013-04-12 21:26

Yes actually I have been there and many other places. I was not impressed with Dubai, people being told what to do and wear, especially women. The slave labour issue is well document, one just needs to google it.

  • Gifted - 2013-04-12 23:44

i fear the worst is yet to come if Dubai hadnt learnt a lesson from the heart attack it gave the to world finances from its reckless spending powered by debt that its oil wealth can't cover during times of global oil demand. Abu dabi should step up pressure on Dubai to curb this threat dubai is creating or else its $25 Bln investment in Dubai will go to dust. Its not guaranteed if western tourists are going to prefer Dubai forever for transit to Asia-pacific, even the prosperous Singapore that build itself on same strategy is losing out to Hong Kong...who knows Dubai might lose out to Qatar or Turkey as a transit point or long haul efficient boeing 787/ airbus 350 xwb as transporting fewer passengers on euro-asia journeys would be profitable...

      Waseem Carrim - 2013-04-13 01:52
