Cebu – A South African rescue mission in the Philippines hit a snag on Monday when a flight to the stricken city of Ormoc was cancelled due to electricity problems in the region.

The Gift of the Givers (GotG) group will now head out early on Tuesday morning to Palompon in western Leyte.

According to Lieutenant Colonel Butch Ong, who is the mission commander for operation, said approximately 80 000 to 100 000 people in the region are injured.

About half of those affected are children.

“We will be the first to enter the area,” said Ong.

The GotG team is made up of 32 volunteers consisting of physicians and rescue experts.

“We’re looking at a lot of trauma. A lot of pneumonia cases, a lot of exposure to the elements and of course post traumatic stress disorder.

“This is the first time that Gift of the Givers will be joining the Philippine delegation. So this is quite historic.”
