Ethiopian-Israelis rally against racism

2012-01-10 21:03

Kyriat Malachi - Roughly 2 000 Israelis of Ethiopian origin staged a rally against racism on Tuesday, seeking to highlight discrimination they face, notably when trying to find housing.

The protesters marched through the streets of Kyriat Malachi following a call by some of the town's residents to stop renting or selling accommodation to Ethiopian Jews.

"We have black skin and pure hearts and they [the racists] have white skins and a black hearts," said the protesters as they brandished signs calling for a "Stop to Racism".

An army reserve officer of Ethiopian origin, Rahamin Adna Yaakov, who served as a protest spokesperson, denounced "those who have forgotten the racist laws of Nazi Germany".

"To all the racists, we say we are proud of the colour of our skin," Yaakov said.

More than 120 000 Jews of Ethiopian origin live in Israel.

For centuries, Jews in Ethiopia were largely cut off from other Jewish communities, and religious authorities in Israel belatedly recognised them as members of the faith.

That recognition led to two waves of immigration to Israel, in 1984 and 1991, but Ethiopian immigrants have struggled to integrate into Israeli society, despite massive government aid.

Jaba where are you, the only democracy in the ME my foot. Israel is an apartheid state.

      Graziella - 2012-01-10 22:04

In case you are not wearing your glasses, this site is divided into section and I comment on all of them, local and International. Now go and crawl back under the neo cons skirt where you belong, you are clueless, you have drunk too much kool aid.

      Graziella - 2012-01-10 22:12

Oh, the are other thing, you are stupid where deciphering print is concerned. You lack the ability to take in primary information from print and interpret it, a working definition of intellectual immaturity. Must be your American education.

      Graziella - 2012-01-10 22:39

Don't you see any relation to what I have written and this article? I think it was a big mistake when teachers started calling stupid kids "learning disabled". You might have been more motivated if they just gave it to you straight.

      Matthew Patrick - 2012-01-11 00:21

I see, now, that you've been following Graziella's comments. The one I replied to was the first comment I'd seen from her. You know what's stupid? Getting personal in a debate. It weakens the credibility of your argument and the other side won't listen to yours. And that's for both of you.

      Jaba - 2012-01-11 09:06

Poverty runs high among Israel's Ethiopian immigrants. Many still live in cramped caravans provided by the government when they first arrived. Poverty and lack of understanding is proving to present a great place for racism to grow. But Israel is NOT an apartheid state, if it was, they would not have secretly airlifted thousands of black Jews to Israel in the 1980s and 1990s. What has happened in this small town is NOT government policy, and the racist residents should face the full might of the law. I despise that handful of Israeli racists as much as i despise you for being a racist.

      Graziella - 2012-01-11 12:50

A principal component of Zionism is racism, in the form of the belief held by Zionists that Jews constitute a race (or ethnic group or however they see themselves) superior to all others, and in particular to those, the Palestinians. Only Israeli citizens and illegal Jewish settlers drive with yellow license plates, which allow them freedom to travel throughout the Holy Land; non-Jewish Israelis cannot buy or lease land in Israel; including Jewish-only settlements, separate roads, discriminatory marriage law. If you are only allowed the right of return if you are a Jew, is that racist or religious?

"We have black skin and pure hearts and they [the racists] have white skins and a black hearts," They have white skin because they are Polish Khazars and Russian AshkeNAZI. Their Sherpadic brethren (original Semites) know nothing of this bigotry that they brought with them from Europe. If a white Australian arrived there they would welcome him with WHITE hearts if he could prove that somewhere, 3000 years ago someone in his family had a Jewish ancestry, and would qualify for full citizenship with all its racist benefits which are not extended to Arabs whose ancestry dates back to before any holocaust survivor arrived there.

      Matthew Patrick - 2012-01-10 21:53

It's not often I see a fellow intellectual commenting here. Also glad that someone else sees that the original Semites, Aramaic Jews, Samaritans etc., who either fled slave labour in Babylon & Egypt or were nomadic tribesman who settled there, were all non-Caucasian, Arabic people. Yes, through the millennia Jews have fled the Caucasus region 'cause of Russian imperialism, the Huns, the Mongols & the Tatar Kahns but they only settled in the Caucasus when they fled the ancient Turks, the Crusades & the Romans and then went back. And of course Hitler's 'Final Solution' forced hundreds of thousands to immigrate to Israel.

      Matthew Patrick - 2012-01-11 00:03

Relax, Frank! Yes, we know it's about Ethiopian Jews and, yes, we both digressed a little. The comments here are always one-liner 'racist this', 'our government that' so it was nice to see someone state an elaborate argument by commenting on the origins of Judaism and Israel, albeit a bit of a slightly off-topic rant. My reply was just following Graziella's argument.

      Sinjoku - 2012-01-11 09:29

LOL..... Wait....LOL....LOL.....LOL..... Do you even know what ashkenazi means and originates from? Have you even been to Israel? Have you any field expieriance behind your comments? I only ask as I find some of your posts rather interesting to read.......

      Graziella - 2012-01-11 12:41

I have no intention of being molested by the perveted zionist custom pigs.

  • Matthew Patrick - 2012-01-10 21:31

Over 5000 years of oppression, bloodshed, racism and discrimination over who's God is better.

  • Cyrus - 2012-01-10 21:54

Well what do you expect,Jews are racist by nature. Non white jews or converted jews are seen as inferior

      Gilad - 2012-01-10 22:38

Jews are racist by nature? And by nature you are generalizing? I don't live in Israel, but I'm pretty sure that none of us are qualified to comment on why Ethiopian jews are not integrating into israeli society. Its a cultural phenomena if anything, not a racial one. The Israeli bitterly disliked the Russian immigrants who entered Israel around 15 to 20 years ago because of their cultural idiosyncracies. From what I understand they have integrated quite well. I think a little more time and the Ethiopians will too, I'm sure to a large degree they have already too. And lets not forget they have the right to protest their mistreatment and it will be handle with genuine concern. Don't preach anti semitism tacitly while you denounce racism Cyrus.

      James - 2012-01-11 01:08

Dead right Cyrus. The Askanazi, regard the Sephardim as a subspecies, they do not marry, hire, associate with them. Rabbi Elizur recently wrote "Kings Torah" Thou shalt not kill only applies to Jew on Jew. Isr. enemies children should be killed. Ditto Gentiles, they are unsimpathetic. The Isr. Govt subsidise this guy $250,000 pa.He mirrors Maimonides.

      James - 2012-01-11 01:12

By the way Gilad what about the 600,000 Palestinians you kicked out of their homes? They are living in semi concentration camps. One last point we can be ANTI ANYTHING WE WANT.

      Jaba - 2012-01-11 08:48

James, Arabs were not expelled from their homes. Israel went to enormous lengths to reassure them, and to get them to stay. In fact, the ones who did stay are citizens of Israel, enjoying all of the rights and privileges of citizenship, although not all of the obligations (such as military service). The ones who left were voluntary quits, who heeded the call of their leadership to get out of the way of the "conquering Arab armies" (I trust you are aware that one day after Israel's declaration of modern statehood, it was attacked by five Arab armies). No one expected Israel to win, but win they did. Won five more subsequent wars, too, all of them started by the Arabs. If you are serious about the question of expulsion, I suggest you look no further than the one million Jews expelled from their homes in Moslem and Arab lands in 1948, with little more than the clothes on their backs. It happened again, on a lesser scale, following Israel's stunning victory in the Six Day War

      Graziella - 2012-01-11 12:53

@Gilat Racist by nature because of their belief that they are a superior race and gentiles like me should be shown no mercy.

  • Martin - 2012-01-11 09:12

It baffles me that something like this gets so much attention, while all the human rights violations committed by Arab and other Muslim states are being swept under the carpet constantly. It really doesn't make sense and reeks of partiality.

  • Blade - 2012-01-11 09:19

Israel saved these people from their own black countrymen, offered them refuge and "massive" financial aid yet they still cannot integrate and now blame their saviours. Hahahaha what pathetic people. Send them back to Ethiopia.

  • Tom - 2012-01-11 11:20

Ha'aretz reports: In the years 1990-2000, the suicide rate of youths of Ethiopian extraction was double that of their age group, according to the Health Ministry. The ministry released this data in a position paper that was discussed in the Knesset Immigration, Absorption and Diaspora Affairs Committee yesterday.… The health ministry's position paper on suicide states that during the years 1996-2000, Ethiopians aged 15-24 constituted 5.2 percent of all suicide cases, even though they accounted for only 1.75 percent of the population in that age group. Officials in the Immigrant Absorption Ministry say that the high suicide rate among immigrant youth is related to inadequate education and low socio-economic status, as well as the cultural and linguistic difficulties immigrants encounter in Israel.

      Blade - 2012-01-11 11:35

Oh well they shouldve stayed in Ethiopia then.

      Tom - 2012-01-11 13:27

@ Blade.....but why should they have stayed in Ethiopia? Shouldnt ALL jews be enjoying the same rights and priveleges? Irrespective of ethnicity.....or are they just too black?

  • Joey - 2012-01-11 13:16

What were the Ethiopian Jews expecting ? I warm hug and red carpet welcomes ?? Hello !! Aparthied Israel has and will always be a racist state that is fueled by Zionist hatred to other cultures and religions. If Jews are being turned away because of the colour of there skin, that makes Israel a racist state. Thats why the Jews Board of Deputies in SA will never have their racist agendas brought to our rainbow nations table. The ANC will never tolerate it...
