Face-chewing attacker 'was religious'

2012-06-07 11:30

Miami - There was no indication the man who chewed off the face of a homeless man had a history of mental illness or was using drugs other than marijuana, the attacker's girlfriend said on Wednesday.

Yovonka Bryant said Rudy Eugene never showed any signs of violence during their four-month relationship. They often read the Bible and the Qur'an together, and often watched a religious television programme in the mornings.

Bryant, who was questioned by police after the attack but is not under investigation, described Eugene as a Christian who wanted to know more about the Muslim faith.

"He would never leave without it, his Bible, and his Qur'an was always by his side," Bryant said. Eugene would place the Bible on top of the Qur'an on the passenger seat of his car, she said.

"He was just figuring out the Qur'an. He just really picked up the Qur'an and was trying to actually get into it as he was into the Bible."

Bryant last heard from Eugene in a text message the day before the 26 May attack alongside a busy Miami highway, but she declined to elaborate on what the message said. There were no warning signs that anything was wrong with Eugene, Bryant said during a news conference in Miami.

"I felt safe with Rudy," she said. "He was happy, in a good mood."

It's not clear what led to the attack on Ronald Poppo, a 65-year-old homeless man who remains hospitalised. Poppo's family has said it had no contact with him for more than 30 years and thought he was dead.

Police have released few details about what may have led to the attack.

Autopsy results

Surveillance video from a nearby building shows Eugene, 31, stripping Poppo, and pummeling him before appearing to hunch over and lie on top of him. The police officer who shot Eugene to death said he growled at the officer when he told him to stop.

Shortly before the attack, a person driving on the MacArthur Causeway told an emergency dispatcher a "completely naked man" was on top of one of the light poles on the causeway and "acting like Tarzan".

Eugene's autopsy results are pending. His girlfriend said she thought someone may have slipped Eugene a drug, but she did not say why she thought that.

Bryant, a single mother of three, said she never saw Eugene drink and only once saw him smoke marijuana at a party.

Court records show Eugene had several arrests on marijuana-related charges. His brother has said Eugene sometimes smoked marijuana but didn't drink much or use hard drugs.

Bryant, a billing specialist for a certified public accountant, hired celebrity attorney Gloria Allred to arrange a news conference "because she thinks it is important that the public know the truth about Rudy Eugene and her relationship with him", Allred said.

No more words needed, until the autopsy results are done and made public.

      Janice - 2012-06-07 12:17

Gosh, we certainly live in a very weird world!!!

      Bergie - 2012-06-07 12:42

I think if you mix Christianity with the Koran it can only end in trouble.

      sibongilesarah.maseko - 2012-06-07 12:59

      hahaha......Bergie........I love that.

      Christopher - 2012-06-07 13:39

Religion the root of all evil!

      boltonbarry - 2012-06-07 14:05

No, religion is not the cause of all evil. Religion has no power or substance. It is only a belief or an idea. Without people there would be no religion. People are evil, always have been always will be. Nothing in this article even suggested that the root cause of this attack was religion. The article does mention his use of contraband. As Janice said. Nothing to be said until the autopsy is released

      Rudie - 2012-06-07 14:25

Why does this idiot have the same name as me ? Makes me red in the FACE.

      Hester - 2012-06-07 15:17

Alicia just read the article again. The person in the picture is the homeless victim, not the face eating idiot.

      Sharon - 2012-06-07 19:10

i wonder if this dude was a redneck, ive heard some wierd stories about them

  • CharlesDumbwin - 2012-06-07 11:55

doesn't sound very religious. I wonder then which of the alleged two religions supported his lifestyle? more journalism hysteria

      J-Man - 2012-06-07 12:47

      Sounds perfectly religious to me.

      Andries - 2012-06-09 03:25

I somehow knew the old 'Real Scotsman' chestnut would appear... and such a dumb retort is only to be expected from you Dumbwin.

      zaatheist - 2012-06-07 13:27

"About: I rejected Jesus and Jesus visits me 7 times and a message of hope in Jesus followed for free!" Really awful, deceitful, dishonest bollocks. Either you are completely mad or completely dishonest. Very easy to figure out which. Making money peddling crapola. PAH!

  • Nick - 2012-06-07 12:04

religious part of it probably had alot to do with it. it causes alot of pain to people.

      Bergie - 2012-06-07 12:45

      ha ha ha!!!

  • stella.mzobotshi - 2012-06-07 12:15

Well i can tell you now that dagga can cause psychosis and this guy was probably delusional.

      Bergie - 2012-06-07 12:46

Naa, dagga would never make a man do that. You sound like a couch spectator when it comes to drugs.

      LanfearM - 2012-06-07 12:49

Bullsh*t. I've never met anyone with dagga-induced psychosis. The only time marijuana can "enhance" pscyhosis, is when the person is already psychotic.

      boltonbarry - 2012-06-07 14:26

Stella you can be right and you can be wrong. Marijuana as with other drugs influences the brain and anything can happen once the brain is not in control. It is plausible that his use of marijuana could have cause him to act in this way. It is also plausible that he could have used other drugs with his marijuana however. The autopsy has not been released so we do not know if he was on Marijuana or any other form of contraband. lanfear read this articleM

  • rannandale - 2012-06-07 12:16

I love how they try to make it sound like somehow weed is to blame, when in actual fact this guy used a "designer" drug, called bath salts - horrific stuff.

      gareth.jones.7771 - 2012-06-07 12:20

One sentence spoke about drugs, and the rest was about the bibles he carried. Did you even read the article?

      boltonbarry - 2012-06-07 14:29

Gareth. The fact that the rest of the articles talks about his religion does not indicated that it made him do it. All the articles about the man only describes how people saw him as a person and non of those articles clearly points to a root cause.

      John - 2012-06-07 16:09

And you know this how?? The autopsy isn't in.... and his family and friends clain he did not do drugs but did smoke dagga.

  • Provence - 2012-06-07 12:28

"should I not also have the right to eliminate millions of an inferior race that multiplies like vermin?" Hitler, of course, is remembered for murdering more than 6,000,000 individual human beings, all of whom he deemed to be inferior members of the species. Was Hitler wrong? Did he misinterpret and misrepresent the theory he claimed to cherish so much? Apparently not. Renowned British evolutionary anthropologist and anatomist Sir Arthur Keith (1866-1955), who was knighted in 1921, came to Hitler's defense, "Hitler is an uncompromising evolutionist, and we must seek for an evolutionary explanation if we are to understand his actions"

      muenda.ramulongo - 2012-06-07 12:42

You are inferior your damn self protence whatever you call yourself.

      alexander.j.knight.9 - 2012-06-07 12:47

@Provence. Hitler was not the only mass murderer in the world. Not defending (in any circumstances) the Nazi here but let us not forget the many others who came after him as well and if we look in Africa we can easily fill a photo albumn.

      zaatheist - 2012-06-07 14:34

More religious dishonesty. Hitler was a god believing creationist. The fox remains always a fox, the goose remains a goose, and the tiger will retain the character of a tiger. - Adolf Hitler, Mein Kampf, vol. i, ch. xi For it was by the Will of God that men were made of a certain bodily shape, were given their natures and their faculties. - Adolf Hitler, Mein Kampf, vol. ii, ch. From where do we get the right to believe, that from the very beginning Man was not what he is today? Looking at Nature tells us, that in the realm of plants and animals changes and developments happen. But nowhere inside a kind shows such a development as the breadth of the jump , as Man must supposedly have made, if he has developed from an ape-like state to what he is today. - Adolf Hitler, Hitler's Tabletalk Whoever would dare to raise a profane hand against that highest image of God among His creatures would sin against the bountiful Creator of this marvel and would collaborate in the expulsion from Paradise. - Adolf Hitler, Mein Kampf, vol ii, ch. i Dumb stuff!

  • alexander.j.knight.9 - 2012-06-07 12:39

So he is religious....will it make a difference that he prayed before chewing the man's face......what a world we live in?!

  • J-Man - 2012-06-07 12:46

Of course he was...they always are.

  • mrp721 - 2012-06-07 12:51

Well now, of course religion will be blamed, but what i have with my Lord & Saviour isn't religion, it's a relationship, so ja big difference.. I'm sorry but when you turn from the Bible to things like the Qur'an, well that's just opening the door for the devil & goodness knows whether this man became demon posessed or not.. But sure sounds like it.. Quite frankly i don't think the autopsy will show anything other than the dagga, autopsy's don't pick up demon possession..

      jody.beggs - 2012-06-07 14:28

Do you pray to this God ? Why ? Damn the man.

  • JohncarlosBiza - 2012-06-07 13:00

    Two-faced savage....literally

  • stella.mzobotshi - 2012-06-07 13:16

      JohncarlosBiza - 2012-06-07 13:22

People who didn't use dagga also became psychotic. Dagga does not cause psychosis...just that in some cases it may increase the effect on a psychotic person. And this is the outcome of research.

      zaatheist - 2012-06-07 13:24

      Oh, stop shouting. STFU.

      J-Man - 2012-06-07 13:28

"I HV SEEN IT FIRST HAND".. i can see that in your spelling....and writing like that and calling others idiots. Point proven, well done.

      thandazab - 2012-06-08 09:02

It does happen. A guy in my street got mad after smoking dagga too much!

      buzz.rsa - 2012-06-15 07:21

Thank you Stella & Thandazab for your professional medical opinions. As it stands, there is no proven link between dagga and craziness. Although dagga use has increased hugely over over the decades, the crazy rate hasn't. Are you saying 1+1=3? P.S. Dagga is in fact used to treat psychoses.

  • Suleman - 2012-06-07 13:52

Its so amazing how in South Africa we can very easily turn something into race, the guy was higher than Charlie Sheen at the set of two and a half men,so stop with the race wars!!!!!!!

  • Ditantane - 2012-06-07 14:24

"They often read the Bible and the Qur'an together", he had no religion at all.

  • Jameel - 2012-06-07 15:04

what has the Bible or the Quraan got to do with this. The Bible teaches thou shall not kill. The Quraan sais that if you've killed one man its as if you've the whole of mankind and if you save a life its as if you've saved the whole of mankind.

  • Deana - 2012-06-07 18:15

Religion's got nothing to do with his psychotic, deranged, or drug induced behavior. I know of no religion where \face-chewing\ is advocated. Sounds more like he was rabid! I hope Poppo recovers soon and will be able o change his life for the better. Poor bloke!

  • Barefoot - 2012-06-07 20:26
