New York - New York City's first cat café opened on Monday, inviting cat women - and men - to enjoy a cup of coffee or pastries in the company of cats that are available for adoption.

Following the popular trend of cat cafés that began in Japan and swept through other Asian and European countries, Meow Parlour allows pet-loving city-dwellers a chance to mingle with kitties that roam freely in a cat-friendly environment.

Visitors longing for a furry companion to snuggle with can reserve time slots ranging from half an hour to five hours. There's also a special time slot for children under 12.

Interest in the café was so overwhelming on its opening day on Monday that its website could not accept any more reservations.

Because of New York City health regulations, Meow Parlour, unlike its Japanese counterparts, is separated from the Meow Parlour Patisserie that sells baked goods. However, the pastries can be brought into the cat room.

The cats, which are provided by a local animal rescue organisation, are all available for adoption.
