Tehran - Four Iranian men were hanged in public on Saturday in the southern province of Fars for armed robbery, kidnapping and murder, the Mehr news agency reported.

Three were executed in the city of Shiraz for armed robbery, kidnapping and murdering two security personnel, the report said.

A fourth man was hanged in Takhteh Kenar for murdering eight people, it added.

The latest hangings bring to 97 the number of executions so far this year in Iran, according to an AFP count based on media reports.

Iranian media reported 179 hangings last year

In 2009, 388 people were executed, according to international human rights groups, making Iran second only to China in the number of people it put to death.

The Islamic republic says the death penalty is essential to maintain law and order and is applied only after exhaustive judicial proceedings.

Some countries go too far in my oppinion and others do little like ours.

That's why "bring back the death penalty" is not just such a simple thing as "bringing back the death penalty". Careful what you wish for.

Having lived in Sharia-Law countries for many years I can remark on many issues but one items sure stands out. " Would be criminals have a healthy fear of law" So by what over tag you wish to attach to this article and the action you sure know the entire population will think twice before commiting a crime.

No need to hang anybody. Life in jail is a fair sentence.

I say GOOD. If you think about it my friends - the whole of this corrupt ANC governoment would be at the end of a pole or rope if this policy was applied fairly and consistently....

The death penalty does not have a parole option nor a "sorry, we made a are free to go" option. many of our convicted murderers would fall into that league? 1%, 10%...more????

      maverix - 2011-04-17 11:54

1% is too many - it's just as bad as the original murder

These people are stuck in the 7th century.

      Old Man - 2011-04-17 09:19

Why the 7th century John? If you're inferring that this is linked to Islam, the death penalty has been around a lot longer that and even today is practiced by a number of US states that would consider themselves Christian.

  • John - 2011-04-17 07:21

if they brought back the death sentance here we wouol not have enough rope !!

  • Mmoledi - 2011-04-17 11:58

In this time of a century some countries have not yet transformed yet, there are lot of punishment the country could use to punish offenders not to kill them by hanging again in front of the people, this tells the world Iran is still behind they are still in times of Nebuchadnezzar and Pharaohs, if there is a death penalty in their country why then cant they do it in a good way rather than in public threatening their own citizens? really Iran is still living in old era they are 500 years back.

  • Mmoledi - 2011-04-17 12:09

How can they say death is applied only after exhaustive means, they are lying that is how they do it and are happy to kill their own people, even the judicial system of Iran is untrustworthy because during past months they were toyi toying in parliament asking for some citizens who are fighting for their rights and rights of others to be killed and that was shown on tv, so what kind of judicial system is that.I can hate to be an Iranian living under draconian laws even in 20th century.
