Gang-rapists tried to run over victim

New Delhi Janua- A gang of rapists who assaulted and murdered a woman on a bus in New Delhi last month tried to run her over with the vehicle after the attack, reports said Wednesday, citing a grisly police account of the incident.

Her boyfriend, who was beaten up and thrown off the bus after the girl had been repeatedly raped, managed to pull her to safety just in time, police are set to allege in a 1 000-page charge sheet to be presented in court on Thursday.

The 23-year-old female medical student, whose ordeal has brought simmering anger about widespread sex crime in India to the boil, bit three of her attackers as she attempted to fight them off, local newspapers and TV reports said.

These injuries on the suspects, as well as forensic evidence such a blood, semen and hair samples and the testimony of the injured boyfriend, are expected to form the main evidence against the accused, reports and police sources said.

Five men have been arrested and are expected on Thursday to formally face murder and rape charges in a fast-track court set up to try them. A sixth suspect is aged 17 and is expected to be tried in a court for juveniles.

"The woman and her friend were stripped and thrown out of the bus," The Indian Express reported. "Her friend pulled her away when he saw the bus reversing to run her over."

The Times of India newspaper said the charge sheet would likely begin with details on how the driver of the private vehicle, who allegedly took part in the rape, got his group of friends together and set out for a joyride.

One of the charges against the accused relates to the destruction of evidence, the paper said, since the driver had tried to wash the bus and had burned the clothes that were snatched from the victim.

The woman died at the weekend after a 13-day struggle to survive injuries so grievous that her intestines had to be removed. She also underwent three major surgeries and suffered a cardiac arrest before being flown to Singapore.

The brutality and horrific nature of the attack has led to protests in the capital and elsewhere, and has prompted calls for the death penalty for the rapists.

The government, which has faced a wave of public anger over the attack, on Tuesday set up a special 13-member committee to look into safety issues and review the functioning of Delhi police on a regular basis.

A panel to recommend changes to the criminal law dealing with sexual crimes was set up last week.

      pain, then death.

      darren.strydom1 - 2013-01-02 12:24

Should ram a pole up their rear ends first and then the chopping block!

      Fishlus - 2013-01-02 14:34

They should be drawn and quartered in public by the crowd. That should provide some incentive for other would be rapists

everything they did to her should be done to them. People need to know what their victims suffer before they died by doing the same to them. These people are sadistic selfish individuals who get their thrills from others suffering. They don't deserve to live.

@steve.spottiswoode : that's a bit of a "cheap shot" Steve. Using this horrible tragedy to argue for the death penalty, it's kinda obvious 99.9% of the readers will feel that the 'perpetrators' deserve to die. But there-in lies the conundrum, realistically, what are the chances of the Indian cops catching the real perpetrators? Also, executing these low life's may seem like a just action, but it sets out a dangerous precedent i.e. anyone found guilty of similar crime/s, will be executed. And, if one considers that, there is no perfect legal/justice system in the world, you have to realize that there is a possibility that one day an innocent man may slip through the cracks & end up being executed for something he/she didn't do. And sadly, in my opinion, it would be a far greater tragedy, in this instance, if an innocent man or innocent men are made to pay with their lives for the crimes of other men. (& I'm not suggesting the men in custody are not the perpetrators). The above example Steve, is why it is more humane to have 100 guilty men live than to have 1 innocent man die...

I will hunt you down and tear you limb from limb nothing shall remain not your memory or name it will be as though you never ever lived.. in a world shackled by weak leadership, criminals are allowed to run amok. these creatures should be doused in petrol then set on fire, rape is the worst crime a coward can commit

Apparently the 17 year old cant be tried for murder cause his a juvenile. that is absolute rubbish as far as im concerened. he knew what he was taking part it. he must hang with the rest of them. bastards.

      Fishlus - 2013-01-02 14:36

they just have to wait until he turn 18 and then try him as an adult. That will resolve that issue

  • diana.gill.18 - 2013-01-02 11:15

A lot of commentators are calling for pain and suffering for those b@stards. I dont think it will help to bring a young lady back to life or to heal her wounds. They are like rabid dogs, without anything humane left in them and same as rabid dogs they must be wasted - one bullet each between their eyes, no need to arrange chinese ceremony to help them part with their pathetic lives.

How does it get reported that these are men?! That woman had her rights and her dignity forceably removed! Forget political correctness and fear of insulting..... These "men" do NOT get the right to be called human and they do NOT get to be likened to animals, as animals did not deserve to be degraded by these THINGS. The title of "human" should be forceably removed from them and the title of "thing" be given in return. Void of feelings, emotions and rights. The death sentence should be implemented worldwide in cases such as these, where reasonable doubt has left the building, and sentence be carried out immediatly after judgment has been handed. This will ensure a speedier transition to judgement from thier maker. @ jbooyse, please do not call them b@stards, as this entitles them to a status of "human" ;-)

  • talana.malherbe - 2013-01-02 12:02

These monsters should receive the death sentence! If you are capable of doing something like this you should be treated like a monster!!!

  • vanessa.govender.73 - 2013-01-02 12:20

it hurts so deeply and leaves my mind in a spin to think how brutal and savage we can be to each other. its beyond comprehension!

  • donald.perumal - 2013-01-02 13:19

Why must SA'n govt wait for similar protests before accelerated action is taken?Fast track courts, changes in the law and ........

  • douglas.reid.921 - 2013-01-03 06:00

News24 dumped the south african rape story in favour of the indian one. Its like rape in india is more newsworthy.

  • faannagel - 2013-01-03 07:35

  • luna.phillipson - 2013-01-03 10:21

death would be to easy for them, make them live 13 days the same issues this poor girl had, remove their intestines and lock them in a room till they bleed to death.

  • douglas.reid.921 - 2013-01-03 10:50

A clear message needs to be sent there as well as here that rape and murder will not be tolerated. Sending people to retire in the big hotel where they have food and shelter and watch tv all day is not going to convince anybody.

  • sagz.achary.5 - 2013-01-03 16:26

Come on JennyLove. Rape is not in the govt. statute books and as the protests show, not supported by the people, like apartheid was (for 40+ years). So the sports boycott was neccessary to highlight the illegitimate govt. in S.A. at the time. Lets not racialise this heinous crime whatever the race or nationality of the victims and perpetrators are. Hang this low life and remove them from the face of this planet forever.
