Rabat - A British tourist jailed in Morocco for "homosexual acts" has been released, his family announced on Tuesday.

Ray Cole, 70, was sentenced to four months after being arrested at a bus stop in central Marrakech in the company of a Moroccan man in his 20s.

A Moroccan government source confirmed he had been released, without giving further details.

"We are delighted to announce that our dad, Ray Cole, has been released from prison and is on his way home," the family wrote on the online campaign page for Cole's release.

"We would like to thank each and every one of you, here and in Morocco, who has helped our campaign to secure the release of our wonderful father.

"We would also like to thank the Moroccan authorities for showing compassion."

No information was immediately available on whether Cole's Moroccan companion Jam Wald Nass was released.

Homosexual acts are punishable by up to three years in prison in Morocco.

Cole's detention had prompted complaints by rights groups and calls for tourists to boycott Morocco.
