Stuttgart - A German school's decision to ban hotpants during a heatwave prompted an online debate on Tuesday about gender and sexism in Germany.

Commentators took to social media websites, including Twitter, under the hashtag #hotpantsverbot - or "hotpants ban" - to voice their concern and anger about the new rule at a school in the southern German town of Horb-Altheim.

"Hotpants are not the problem - the problem is a society in which men think that women baring their legs are sexually available," one user commented.

The school sent out a letter on Monday informing parents that "arousing clothes will not be tolerated in our school", adding that "those dressed in a provocative way will be given a large T-shirt... which they will be required to wear until the end of the day".

"We don't intend to suppress your child's individuality. We want to contribute to a healthy school environment in which everyone can feel comfortable and social and societal values are lived and encouraged," the letter said.

The news comes after conservative newspaper Die Welt reported that a school in Bavaria had warned parents not to allow their children to dress provocatively because an asylum seekers' home had been erected next to the school's gym.
