Girl dies after outrageous hit-and-run

2011-10-21 09:48

Beijing - A 2-year-old Chinese girl run over by two different vehicles and ignored by passersby has died, local media reported on Friday, in a case which ignited public uproar over what some called the immorality of modern society.

The hospital's "all-out efforts were ineffective" at saving Wang Yue, the China News Service cited a local news website as saying. She died in the early hours of Friday more than a week after the accident.

Both drivers who ran over the girl have been arrested, but internet users have flooded microblogs decrying the apathy of the people who left her for dead, after brutally graphic footage from a security camera of the incident went viral.

Surveillance video from the October 13 hit-and-run and later aired by a television station shows the girl run over by a van, which drives off, leaving her to bleed on a narrow street in Foshan city in the southern province of Guangdong.

Changing societal values

More than a dozen people over the next seven minutes walk or drive past the girl on bicycles and she is run over by a second truck. A woman then pulls the girl to the side of the street before her mother, a migrant worker in the city, rushes into the frame.

China's economic boom and the growing disparity between the rich and poor have made changing social values a contentious topic, with some lamenting what they see as materialism replacing morals.

Wang's death quickly became the most talked about topic on China's popular Twitter-like microblog service, Sina's Weibo.

"I hope that this little angel who was discarded by society can act as a wake-up call to the nation about the importance of moral education," wrote "gongzai xiaoben".

"Hope you can find some love in heaven. This world is full of apathy," added "Winter space".

Lawsuits for good Samaritans

The Communist Party chief of Guangdong province urged "searching reflection" about the incident, the official Guangzhou Daily reported on Friday.

"Take active and effective steps to raise the moral standards of the entire society," he told a meeting of province officials, according to the paper.

Many people in China are hesitant to help people who appear to be in distress for fear that they will be blamed.

High-profile lawsuits have ended with good Samaritans ordered to pay hefty fines to individuals they sought to help.

Humans? The more I have to do with many of them, the less I want to know them. RIP little girl :(

      richard.hipkin - 2011-10-21 15:10

Agree to that, we the most disgusting specimens on this planet...

  • Marius - 2011-10-21 10:21

this has been the single most heartless act that I have ever witnessed. rest in peace little girl...

  • Charmaine - 2011-10-21 10:23

Rest in peace little Wang Yue..

  • cvissie - 2011-10-21 10:23

    Rest in peace Wang Yue

  • Andre - 2011-10-21 10:26

Don't be so quick to Question the morals of the Chinese, The exact Same thing would happen here in S.A, people would be scared to help in fear that it was a setup ambush hijacking.

      Jackie - 2011-10-21 11:20

Im sorry Andre but as bad as it gets here, we as a nationa would help any child in need this way no matter what!!

      Irené - 2011-10-21 11:48

Speak for yourself Andre- any person with a heart who witnessed this would stop without a second thought for their own welfare

      sabrael - 2011-10-21 14:44

Actually, no. Remember Louise de Waal? Anybody ever wonder why no one who saw her get stuffed into that car followed it? Apathy is everywhere. Here, in China, all over the world. I've seen stranded motorists ignored. People hit by cars ignored. Starving children ignored. Andre has a very valid point. Get off your high horse. Apathy exists in every society. China is not the problem - we all are.

      nasheenar - 2011-10-21 16:04

Andre our reason for not wanting to stop is fear of being killed ourselves but we would definately make a telephone call if we were not able to stop and help.I cant say that we would leave a child to die no matter what the skin color.Dont always rip us off meaning South Africans.

      jaco.duplessis2 - 2011-10-21 16:35

Don't agree Andre - saw a vehicle overturn on the N1 over the weekend - a little girl stood next to the vehicle - several cars stopped and ran to help.

      Harold - 2011-10-21 19:47

It's a well documented psychological phenomena known as Bystander Effect. So yes you're correct it could easily happen here too.

  • trippygrape - 2011-10-21 10:32

This story is at least a week old. Why is it being republished continuously?

      cvissie - 2011-10-21 10:37

No it is not. Yes, the hit and run was a week old. But she died today. Some of us have actually been following this story waiting to hear what happened to little Wang Yue after this horrible affair.

      bvniekerk - 2011-10-21 10:40

They must publish stories like this a million times .. . A very sad story of life today.

      ttshabalala - 2011-10-22 00:19

You speak like the devil....I assume you are. Which is a good thing, because my faith in humanity would be seriously lowered if the person commented here like a moron was a real person. Now go back home to hell and leave this're trespassing.

  • Melinda - 2011-10-21 10:32

It make me think of the little one that was a hit and ran in Brakpan on the east rand about a month, the driver hit the little one and drove off, the police are still looking for this person it's so sad the parents only had the one child and can not come to closure

  • Lola - 2011-10-21 10:32

RIP Little Angel... As a mother myself, I cannot even begin to comprehend how people can just leave a defenceless little child to hurt like this. China or not, it is a sick situation!!!

  • joelstew - 2011-10-21 10:37

  • Reginald - 2011-10-21 10:51

  • Marion - 2011-10-21 10:54

    RIP little one.

  • thabang.madubanya - 2011-10-21 11:13

How does a human being walk passed a child in Excrutiating pain like that..No this is just Inhuman. People who walked passed her a the real ones who killed her,and the drivers should get a life sentence inprisionment.

  • anthony.swart - 2011-10-21 11:18

Watched the video wish i hadn't, scared for life, and our government climbs in bed with such heartless bastards it's no wonder we are where we are today.

      Rohin - 2011-10-21 16:27

Anthony, I'm Chinese. Please don't think that we're all such heartless bastards.

  • mamtad - 2011-10-21 12:00

that is heart breaking. what sort of creature are you to not feel a thing at such a sight? to not run to this poor defenseless powerless child and help her with all you've got rather then pretend she's not lieing there? i have never felt more sick to the stomach than when watching the video of this poor child. may her soul rest in peace and may every single person who walked by her feel her pain for an eternity.

  • BubblesdoubleO7 - 2011-10-21 12:23

OMG!!! I literally have tears streaming down my cheeks, this is the most horrendous thing I have ever seen. Lord I pray that you bless and keep her safe in your loving arms. May her beautiful soul rest in infinite peace.

      Marion - 2011-10-21 16:08

I have deliberately not looked at that video because I don't think I would ever get it out of my mind. Just reading about it has been traumatic enough for me. I cannot believe people are so callous that they didn't help her. thabang.madubanya said that the people who walked past her are the real ones who killed her and I have to agree with that. As I didn't see the video I assume that the passersby actually looked at her, ignored her, and kept on walking. Vile.

  • jasonvdvorst - 2011-10-21 12:34

    Absolutely shocking!!!

  • kerrimg - 2011-10-21 14:50

so sad. they dont even treat there children with respect shame on you

  • Deon - 2011-10-21 15:55

The Chinese are having it a bit difficult: Getting a fine if they help and also getting in trouble for not helping, it sounds like the new USA.

      Sunett - 2011-10-21 17:21

C'mon Deon - you and I both know that if either of us walked passed a scene like this, fine or no fine, we WOULD STOP AND HELP!!! I'd be sceptical if it were an adult, but a tiny little girl..? Fines can be paid, but how do you silence your conscience?

  • David - 2011-10-21 15:59

It seems that the human race is after all, in our most primitive being, only animal. There are some that show compassion, and some that go on with life regardless of events around them. This was disturbing for me, yet fascinating to think that people won't reach out and do something...the question of taking responsibility for one actions come to mind here for me

  • Rohin - 2011-10-21 16:20

I really want to hope like hell that not all Chinese people are this way - this particular instance just happened to be in China. I think too often now, and in our own lives - we've become so obsessed, and we also are too scared to help someone - in South Africa we are scared it's a scam and we may be robbed/killed/raped - but it's also a case of apathy - we don't want to become inconvenience. I really hope there is a hell so that all those people that did nothing will burn slowly and long in hell for eternity.

  • bhaviga - 2011-10-21 16:33

  • Silvana - 2011-10-21 16:51

Just watched the video. God Almighty what has become of the human race? The drivers should be sentenced to death. The passersby should receive the same fate. BS that they are scared of being blamed. There are ways of giving assistance without being implicated. I spit on them.

  • Wendy - 2011-10-21 16:53

I sincerely hope that every inhumane person who walked past this little girl dies the most horrific and painful death!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Sunett - 2011-10-21 16:54

Just watched the video through the link provided by Trevor: . It is a VERY disturbing video, how can ANYBODY see what they saw and just walk by????? This is definately a new low for the human species. Poor child... RIP little one.

  • Jason - 2011-10-21 17:07

Just watched the video - absolutely disgusting - I cannot believe that 2 vehicles drove over her, passersby didnt even stop - f*cking sick to my stomach!!

  • Fourhundredkg - 2011-10-21 18:24

And these are the people that the pigs in our government suck up to...

  • Daphne - 2011-10-21 20:43

Scary stuff. Very disturbing - is this what the world will come to due to the population explosion?

  • rene.mcevoy - 2011-10-21 22:06

R.I.P. I have been praying for her. I still find it hard to believe that something so horendous has occurred. Reminds me of the dead new born baby in the road and people just walked past it and ignored it like trash, yip also in China.

  • John - 2011-10-21 22:11

This is horrific..Same in Nigeria..Bodies left for days by the road side..But what was a two year old doing in the road...The mother needs to be prosecuted big time..

  • Tracey - 2011-10-22 13:18

Every one of those cruel heartless so called "people" should be identifiedand all put in prison for life or a life for a life. So annoyed and angry, in my mind they were accessories to this poor wee girls death.

  • Tracey - 2011-10-22 13:24

Everyone of those so called "people" who ignored that poor girl should all be identified and put in prison for life or even better a life for a life, as far as i'm concerned they were all accssories to the childs death. So angry how people could do such a thing, afraid of being blamed total rubbish, it's a two year old child for god sake. Rest in Peace
