Alekos Alavanos on Thursday announced the formation of the Plan B party, arguing that the country's austerity program had caused lasting damage and that membership of the 17-strong group of EU countries that use the euro was no longer in the national interest.

The 63-year-old Alavanos headed the leftwing Syriza party between 2004 and 2008.
