Srinagar - Police say five civilians and a policeman have been wounded in a grenade attack in Indian-controlled Kashmir.

Police blamed anti-India rebels for the attack on Tuesday in Anantnag town, south of Srinagar, the Himalayan region's largest city. No rebel group immediately has claimed responsibility.

Police officer Ramesh Jalla says suspected rebels threw the grenade at two military vehicles in the town. An army truck was partially damaged in the attack.

Kashmir is divided between India and Pakistan and claimed by both in its entirety. Indian forces have largely suppressed an insurgency that erupted in 1989.

About 68 000 people were killed in the uprising and subsequent crackdowns by Indian forces. There are still frequent street protests as resentment against Indian rule remains strong.
