Head of Syrian military police defects

2012-12-26 13:35

Beirut - The head of Syria's military police has defected from the army and declared allegiance to the uprising against President Bashar Assad, according to a video and a security source.

"I am General Abdelaziz Jassim al-Shalal, head of the military police. I have defected because of the deviation of the army from its primary duty of protecting the country and its transformation into gangs of killing and destruction," the officer said in a video published on YouTube.

A Syrian security source confirmed the defection but played down its significance, saying that Shalal was due to retire and had defected to "play hero".

If I were in the Free Syrian Govt., I would simply imprison or shoot this scum. He has waited far too long to defect. Clearly he is defecting only to save his butt.

. Totally agree, that he is scum, and is jumping a sinking ship, but one must not discourage other scum to do same, so in the end , like that gaddafi monster, this assad will be found ,alone, in a sewerage pipe !!!!

not only did he wait so long to defect, he was amongst the few in assads gov who would order the armed forces under their control to fight heavy handed against a 'rebel' force who's weapons are becoming more and more sophisticated by the day (courtesy of you know who) . He choose to defect at a time when he was not given a position that he was after, being the head of SSIS -the elite sercet and intel service. Dont be surprise if he is given an equal or higher post in the ''Free for all Syrian Army''! It is scum like this that will take their bad ways with them wherever they go! So good luck to the 'Free for all Syrian army'!
