Sydney - An Australian woman was in hospital after swallowing oven cleaner to cure her hiccups on the recommendation of a Queensland restaurant, news reports said on Friday.

Staff at the restaurant mistakenly thought the unlabelled clear glass bottle they handed her contained vinegar, which is a traditional remedy for hiccups.

"It was an accident but we accept full responsibility," Paul Jeynes, proprietor of The Point Restaurant, told the Gold Coast Bulletin.

"This is a terrible thing for the restaurant but it's not about us right now. We'll do everything and anything to assist her family."

The incident happened last week. The woman was taken by paramedics to the Gold Coast's Pindara Hospital, which refused to give out any information on the patient.

The Gold Coast is 80km south of Brisbane.
