Iowa City - US Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton on Tuesday called the crisis in Greece "a tragedy" during a campaign event in Iowa City, Iowa.

"Their gross national product has dropped by 25%. They have youth unemployment over 50%. People are suffering. Pensioners are really worrying that they're not going to be able to afford food," she explained to reporters.

Clinton then urged Europe to "exert every effort" to reach an agreement with Athens.

"Obviously, at the end of the day, it's up to the Greek people to decide what they're willing to do. I hope we can see an outcome here that will actually help Greece recover and keep them in the euro zone and keep Europe united," she said.
