Homeless Brazilians find loot - turn it in

2012-07-10 09:04

Sao Paulo - A homeless Brazilian couple that lives under the bridges of Sao Paulo found a garbage bag filled with 20 000 reals (R81 000) on a sidewalk on Monday - and promptly turned it into the police.

Officials said the pair was out for a dawn stroll when they heard an alarm.

They walked closer to see what was going on and stumbled on a briefcase and a garbage bag full of money. The pair alerted a nearby security guard, asking him to call the police.

"When we arrived, the couple gave us the money. It might be the money stolen last week from a Japanese restaurant," said military police spokesperson Bruno dos Santos.

The homeless pair "had the opportunity to flee with the money, but they called a security guard and asked him to call the military police. What they did is commendable," the spokesperson said.

Jesus Silva Santos, the man who found the money, told the media that he earned a little more than $7 a day from recycling trash.

"My mother taught me never to steal," he said.

Nice to hear (read) something like this. Not many folks like that here - They will take and take and steal, say that it is theirs by right and then blame it on others.

There's a reason they are still homeless.

      TSR01 - 2012-07-10 18:29

Yes, the reason is they didn't take the money that didn't belong to them. The ANC wouldn't have looked twice, they take what they want, no matter who it belongs to. BEE (Black Economic Entitlement) mentality - "what's yours is mine, what's mine is mine, then its all fine".

@Brian, I hear what you say, but stolen money can and will never be a blessing. They did the right thing by reporting it. They will be in the news again, for sure. And this time.... you just wait and see.
