Hanoi - Doctors at a hospital in southern Vietnam apologised after two families discovered they had been raising the wrong baby for nearly three months after the infants were switched at the facility, local media reported on Tuesday.

The boy and girl were born at Long Khanh General Hospital in Dong Nai province in early January to mothers in neighbouring beds, Thanh Nien newspaper reported.

Although the mothers had been expecting their newborns would be of the opposite sex, both thought the ultrasound tests they had received before the births were incorrect.

After taking the babies home, however, the two families suspected a mistake had been made and decided to have a DNA test. The results showed they had the wrong babies and the families traded their infants, the Dan Tri newspaper reported.

Doctors at the hospital met and apologised to the families on Saturday and offered to cover the costs of the DNA tests.

Doctors made the mistake because the two mothers gave birth at the same time, Thanh Nien quoted Su Son, director of the hospital, as saying. They were mixed up when taken away for washing, a physician at the hospital said on the condition of anonymity.

The two families confirmed the reports but did not want to give their names.
