Islamabad - Militants claiming to be members of Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) have threatened a Pakistani lawyer for defending a university professor accused of posting blasphemous remarks on Facebook, police officials said on Friday.

At least half a dozen gunmen fired shots at lawyer Shahbaz Gurmani's home in the eastern city of Multan on Wednesday night, police official Muhammad Zulfikar said.

The next morning, Gurmani received a letter bearing the name and stamp of ISIS, threatening him with dire consequences if he did not withdraw as defence lawyer for the professor.

Another lawyer, Rashid Rehman, who previously defended professor Junaid Hafeez, was shot dead in May.

Hafeez has been in jail since students at his university accused him of posting blasphemous comments on Facebook, police official Amjad Javed Saleemi said.

Police are investigating how the militants are connected to ISIS, Saleemi said.

Graffiti praising ISIS, the militant group that controls large swathes of Iraq and Syria, has appeared in many Pakistani cities, including Multan, but officials deny the group's presence in the country.

Pakistan's blasphemy laws, which impose the death penalty for insulting religion, are a source of social fragmentation in the country of 180 million people, most of whom are Muslim.
