India slammed for rape victim 'finger tests'

New Delhi - Human Rights Watch called on the Indian government on Sunday to ban the "undignified" treatment of rape victims who are often subjected to degrading examinations by doctors.

The New York-based rights group highlighted the continuing use of the so-called "finger test" in India in which a doctor tests the laxity of a victim's vagina, apparently to determine if she is "habituated to sexual intercourse".

Commenting after the horrific gang-rape in New Delhi of a 23-year-old student, who died on Saturday, the group said the findings from such tests were "unscientific" and often wrongly discredited complaints from women.

"While conducting medical examinations, many doctors record unscientific and degrading findings," said a statement from the organisation, which called on the government to "eliminate the use of finger tests on sexual assault survivors".

The Delhi gang-rape has led to soul-searching and demands that authorities do more to protect women, who face daily discrimination and harassment with little sympathy or help from police.

Rape survivors "usually find it difficult to register police complaints, and often go from one hospital to another even for a medical examination, and often report suffering humiliation at police stations and hospitals," Human Rights Watch said.

This "finger test" sounds horrific and unecessary ! However, the official doctor's examination report of a rape victum is an essential component to the future prosecution of the perpetrator(s) : who should rot in hell !

The "finger test" is used so that "upper caste" rapists are let off!The Govt of India should resign!

      lownabester - 2012-12-30 17:28

So agree with you, They have the worst human rights record with their caste system. Poor Lady.

@lownabester Only problem is even SA will do business and play sport fully aware of this evil. Its time we tok a stand!Next time india visits,in whatever form make them aware they are NOT welcome!

Good, slam them into the ground we are all getting very tired of governments.

  • lacrimose.wolf - 2012-12-30 17:48

How do people of science, doctors, believe that such a test has any merit? Even if one is "habituated to sexual intercourse" that still doesn't automatically mean the woman was not raped. My head hurts to think that in (almost) 2013, ideas like this still exist. How is it that some parts of the world have been left so far behind?

      abdulbaith.sayegh - 2012-12-30 18:48

In SA people still believe that muti can save you from live ammunition.

      donald.perumal - 2012-12-30 19:31

People don't believe in the "test" its a way of letting those "high caste bstards" off the hook!

    Wonderful country, India...

  • abdulbaith.sayegh - 2012-12-30 18:31

At least the Indian people took the streets to show their discontent with these horrific crimes against mostly women and children, and what do we do? We comment on this platform about how bad the Indian government is when it comes to dealing with crime over there. Aren't we hypocrites? Its not that South Africa is anything better.

      abdulbaith.sayegh - 2012-12-30 20:00

Dear VERY SMART maybe the following example with make you understand what I am actually trying to say. In South Africa people took to the streets over a Jacob Zuma painting whilst thousands of women and children are getting brutally raped and some instances killed. I've never seen anyone protesting to force the government to actually do something about it, maybe you did. Now get into your car and take a dive to India if that is what you really want to do.

      rude.awakning - 2012-12-30 20:16

ramon, i doubt you read the comment in the first instances, if by any change you did read it, then you completely misunderstood the comment!

finger test! I think its a brilliant idea! Afterall its gonna determine whether the testee was or is habitually sexualy active! Whats the complaining all about? long as it done to the ACCUSED, they have to find the doctor with the biggest and longest fingers and they have to conduct multiple test until his prostate becomes swollen so big it must hang out of his anus like loaded sacks! Then make him sit on a nailbed with two bags of cement on his lap! After which he must be sentenced to life and placed amongst longserving hardened criminals. Give him a generous supply of round shaped soap balls, ensuring he will drop it whilst in the communal prison shower! Whilst i do not condone rape, it will make me happy to hear that the perp got forcefully violated daily for the rest of his natural life in prison 'REAL MEN DONT RAPE!'

  • simphiwe.tladi - 2012-12-31 10:49

Yoh!...even though SA has a high rate of rape,Im glad we do not re-abuse the already abused...anyway,India's getting sick too.
