New Delhi - Admirers of Indian premier Narendra Modi who built a temple dedicated to him were advised against the project by Modi himself on Thursday.

Modi wrote on Twitter that he was "appalled" to hear about the temple containing an idol of him in his home-state of Gujarat.

"This is shocking & against India's great traditions. Building such Temples is not what our culture teaches us. Personally, it made me very sad. Would urge those doing it not to do it," he said.

Following Modi's comments, the temple trust decided to cover up his statue - wearing his party's saffron scarf - and would replace it with that of "Bharat Mata" or Mother India, broadcaster NDTV reported.

The temple cost nearly $16 000 to build, and was to be officially opened on Sunday.

"Narendra Modi is an icon for our youth... he is just like a god for the younger generation and that's why we have built this temple," said Jayesh Patel, a member of temple trust told NDTV.

Modi led his Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Pary to a landmark win in national elections last year. He was chief minister of Gujarat for over a decade.

Temples dedicated to politicians or film-stars are not uncommon in India. Last year, a supporter built a temple dedicated to Sonia Gandhi, leader of the then ruling Indian National Congress.
