Iran produces nuclear fuel rod - claim

2012-01-01 12:25

Tehran - Iran says its scientists have produced the nation's first nuclear fuel rod, a feat of engineering the West doubted Tehran was capable of.

Sunday's announcement comes after Iran has said it was compelled to manufacture fuel rods on its own since international sanctions banned Tehran from buying them on foreign markets.

Nuclear fuel rods contain pellets of enriched uranium that provide fuel for nuclear power plants.

Iran's atomic energy agency's website says the first domestically made rod has already been inserted into the core of Tehran's research nuclear reactor.

It's unclear if the rod contained pellets or was inserted empty, as part of a test.

The West fears Iran's uranium enrichment programme is geared toward making atomic weapons - a charge Tehran denies.

Armageddon is getting near... An embolden Iran will not hesitate to attack Israel...which is the end goal of Iran's foreign policy.

      Utopian - 2012-01-01 13:14

Easy on the popcorn there johnny, I think you have been watching one to many hollywood movies. I am sure Iran is after a nuclear weapon but only because it is the only way that a country will be allowed a seat at the main table. Any country that launches a nuke is basically committing suicide, the leverage is in the threat not the action.

Well Utopian, I can asure you that Israel does not see it that way - nor does the West. When you keep on making stupid statements about annihilating Israel you should expect some paranoia. Expect an explosion there soon. Either an "accident" or an overt act on the part of Israel.

      Utopian - 2012-01-01 14:54

Well Squeegee, You are unfortunately a victim of propaganda. Ahmadinejad never said that Israel should be wiped off the map, in fact the exact phrase used was " The World Without Zionism." He was referring to the agenda pursued by a small jewish minority who vow to recapture mount zion no matter what the cost (exactly what is happening in the westbank with the new Jewish settlements being built all the time). Now, the Iranians certainly have a very well oiled propaganda machine but to be fair they have never said that they wanted to eradicate Israel.

Iran are Shi-ite Muslims. They believe that their Magdi( Messiah)will only return if and when the world is in chaos. Believe me- they will have no reservations about using the bomb

      Dmitri - 2012-01-01 17:00

@Dirk, I take it you are fererring to the 12th Imam ? @Dan, The coast of Alaska and Canada will be hit by the debris from the Japanese tsunami in a few weeks. That is almost a year after the quake. Nuclear fallout will spread quicker. If Iran and Israel go toe to toe, expect China, N.Korea, Russia to also get involved. There will be survivors, but a generation or so later, all you will have are mutated humans due to radiation. If you stay in a bunker, you need to stay there for a few decades. As someone once said, the 4th world war will be fought with sticks and stones.

and then thats the end of iran if they intend attacking a nation that is stockpiled with birds just waiting to fly

  • Garth - 2012-01-01 13:04

It is with hope for peace in the middle east and hence the world, that the rod is of inferior quality, releasing the pellets too soon, resulting in over-bombardment and catastrophe for iran. Maybe then, the peoples of that once civilised, educated and free-thinking country will be free from the governing regime.

I think this is good news ... was reading up on neuclear winter the other day . If iran and Isreal exchance a few nukes it could lead to neuclear winter that would kill over 90% of the world population and we can start over . The added benifit is that most of the religious zeliots would be wiped of the earth. With 90% of pople gone this planet would have a chance of survival . Hopefully those thats left over will build a better society than the current one . And 200 years of radioactivity is nothing for a planet thant millions of ears old

      Squeegee - 2012-01-01 20:25

Dear Dan, if you survive, please don't breed. It would be really nice if the earth is repopulated with intelligent people.

      Dan - 2012-01-02 21:09

Squeegee cant agree with you more . its breeding that got us in this mess in the first place
