Iran vows 'proportionate' response

2012-06-02 19:56

Tehran - Iran will respond to any Israeli or US attack against its nuclear sites with a "proportionate" reaction, the military adviser to the country's supreme leader Ali Khamenei said on Saturday.

General Yahya Rahim Safavi, quoted by Fars news agency, said however that such an attack was unlikely.

Despite warnings from Washington and Israel that "all options are on the table" if negotiations between Iran and major powers on Tehran's controversial nuclear programme fail, conditions do not favour an assault, he said.

"They may be able start one but they can not end it and it remains in Iran's hands," the general said.

"The domestic political, economic and social conditions in America and the Zionist regime are not such as to have a new war in the region," he said.

US President Barack "Obama wants to get re-elected (in November)... the cabinet of Mr (Israeli prime minister Benjamin) Netanyahu is a fragile one," he said.

However, in case of an attack, "we will act against their military operation smartly, proportional to any damage that they inflict on us ... meaning we will hurt them as much as they hurt us."

The people are coming after you, Safavi. There's still time to change. It's in your hands. Are you and your friends who have hijacked the Iranian state going the way of Bin Ali or Gaddafi?

  • Andrew Carelse - 2012-06-02 21:06

ag no, guys - leave Iran alone!

      fred.fraser.12 - 2012-06-02 21:27

The Iranian regime is not the Iranian people. The Iranian regime adjusts elections to hold onto power. It has therefore stolen the Iranian government from the Iranian people. It funds the Jihadist movement which has killed and maimed hundreds of thousands of innocent people in Iraq, Afghanistan, Africa and other parts of the world, mostly Muslims. It supports the stoning of women. It openly calls for the destruction of Israel, a sovereign nation. It denies the Holocaust, the single biggest attempt at human genocide in human history: six million Jewish people killed. It abuses the Palestinians by arming and inciting them to attack Israel almost daily to hold onto power. It is arming the unelected dictator of Syria who is butchering Syrians and their families who want nothing more than the right to vote for their leaders in free and fair elections. This is what it does. Do you support this oppression?

      manaf.abubakari - 2012-06-02 22:11

fred.fraser you compare ben ali and gadafi to iran govt.what about the bahraini king who dined with the queen, the saudi king and hosni mubarak an ally of america for decades

      fred.fraser.12 - 2012-06-02 22:33

Why should that stop the Iranian people from being free of oppression?

      rudiwaan.joseph - 2012-06-03 08:21

fred the holocaust was nothing short of despicable and the freer world stood by watching whislt it happened! But did no one tell you that hitler wasnt a muslim arab!

      Larry - 2012-06-03 09:31

During the second world war, and while Jews were being exterminated in concentration camps under Hitler's Nazi expansion, Hitler found strong allies in the middle east Arab leaders. At the time, and as a result of this relationship, Arab countries began a concerted effort to persecute their Jewish citizens which culminated in their expulsion and confiscation of their properties and assets. These Arab Jews were basically herded from all corners of Arabia and 'concentrated' in Israel where a final solution was planned to exterminate them along with Hitlers vision. However nazi Germany was defeated and the Arabs found that they had created Israel, much to their horror, with 60% of all Israeli Jews being Arab Jews and their progeny. In response to their own blunder, the Arab nations attacked Israel the day after independence was proclaimed and would have followed through with their pact with Hitler if Israel had not repulsed them.

      rudiwaan.joseph - 2012-06-03 10:28

larry. The SA aparthied era history books says nothing to indicate that arabs sided with hitler in h is sick quest to rule the world. So is this obsession of the west and puppert allies to be seen as payback for what they think the arabs did?

      Larry - 2012-06-03 11:09

Rudiwaan, your credibility and logic is paper thin. One does not reference SA apartheid history books to attain historical information about the Middle East Arab relationship with Nazi Germany. There is indesputable documentation of all that I described. If Hitler was not stopped, they would have invaded all of Russia, the UK and deep into Africa, with the potential to expand Nazi imperialism on a scale that would have made the Ottoman Empire look like a Sunday book club. The Muslim Arab nations inadvertantly created Israel, to their undying shame and humiliation. We must give thanks. The only obsession that Israel is guilty of is that of survival, and thankfully our good friends and allies share that obsession.

      fred.fraser.12 - 2012-06-03 17:12

Not sure why you say that Rudiwaan. Is that all you got out of the list of negative influences the Iranian regime is involved with?

  • Mbavhalelo - 2012-06-02 21:46

      Jerzy - 2012-06-03 06:37

How do you plan on getting rid of democratically elected President of the US? You don't possess such powers. You cannot vote in the US election so your statement is of little significance.

Once again gerhard, you Dont possess such powers to predict the future or get rid of democratically elected presidents. Please explain how this will be over by Wednesday. I'm waiting......

      Larry - 2012-06-03 07:25

How long are you going to wait....until you get a sense of humor?

      rudiwaan.joseph - 2012-06-03 08:16

No larry, until you get a sense of reality! american WMD is superior no one doubts it. That it is the back bone of your military power that you promise to unlease on any nation that has the ability to equal or match it, we dont doubt. So i conclude that as long as ''pinky and the brain' are the only ones that wants to dominate the world it OK with you!

      Larry - 2012-06-03 08:36

I agree. The world needs to be dominated by the forces of freedom and democracy, so that ordinary people can escape repressive governments, aquire a proportionate share of their nations wealth, so that contries can progress rather than regress, and that they can be their own masters of their destiny. Most importantly, religion of any sort, must not dictate government policy and become a force for evil behavior.

      rudiwaan.joseph - 2012-06-03 09:18

@ larry. And so hitler started.......!

      Larry - 2012-06-03 10:04

No Rudiwaan, you are confused. Hitler was defeated by the forces of democracy and freedom. Islamic fascist ideology will go the same way. You make a fundamental error in equating Hitlers Nazi'ism and Mussolini's fascism with modern day Western democracies. It is Islamic fascism and tyranical Islamic governments that emulate Hitler, not only in expansionist ideologies by means of violence, but also in the desire to kill Jews.

      fred.fraser.12 - 2012-06-03 12:21

Jerzy, the Iranian regime is not democratically elected. It adjusts elections to hold onto power.

  • Sibusiso - 2012-06-02 23:11

The boldness from the leader tells me that Iran already has nuclear power. Iran against USA will be too big, it will ignite the middle east and the blaze will catch Europe. USA will definitely whip Irans butt, but they should be careful, Russia and china might step in, or North korea might use the distraction to erase S.korea on the map

      Larry - 2012-06-02 23:25

Just bluster from Iran. Saddam also claimed that he would conquer the USA in the 'mother of all battles'. These people who have never experienced a real war, Iran and the african chappies with their big mouths here, are all rearing to go thinking that it is such an adventure. Little do they know how quickly they will scamper into the nearest hole with their tail between their legs. The freedom that democracy brings is the future of life on this planet. This is an elixer that all men and women long for. This Islamic fascism is standing in the way and it will be eradicated on two fronts, both by the West and by the people who suffer under its oppression.

      Mbavhalelo - 2012-06-02 23:57

Larry u are totally correct, where dis islamic fanatics are der a cruel gvt and if de gvt near dis mad leaders wants democracy dey sponser suicide bombers who are brainwashed to think dat God will accept dem for killing demselves in order 2 kill de one dey hate. Thankfully no major is coming, but lots of pain and suffering. We don't have to do things this way. We don't have to grow this way. Yet we do.

      rudiwaan.joseph - 2012-06-03 07:07

really fred! If ''we'' dont have to do it this way? Who is we? Your ''WE'' dont have the right under international law to dictate to the world what to do' Hitler started in the same way, he inflicted pain and senseless killing of a selected group once his obsession with this people became less of a issue he turned to every nation and country to conquer the world! Once the modernday Hitlers' are done with the arab holocaust they too will turn to world domination! I await the day when they real free thinking world will turn on the bully's i just hope that it wont be at a cost of millions of innocents before they wake up!

      Larry - 2012-06-03 07:19

Rudiwaan, most people would understand Fred's "WE" as a collective "WE", meaning both sides of the West under democratic freedom and the Islamic fascist ideologies that are fomenting war and economic oppression on their own people.

      rudiwaan.joseph - 2012-06-03 08:41

larry thanx for clearing that up! Now everyone knows that the 'we' was you and fred.. There was a time when UN, NATO and similar world bodies had a place in world peace... And then you guys came along. if your intensions were good and your priorities right, then China and Russia has a far great population that is 'oppressed' and yet you say or do jack sh*t about it! So i have a hard time believing your actions doesnt have a hidden agenda!

      Larry - 2012-06-03 09:00

Both China and Russia are embracing capitalist economic reforms, and freer societies compared to the original hardline communism. Their communism failed, not because of Western opposition, but because it is a dehumanising, non-sustainable system. Islamic fascism is far worse and this mind-numbing ideology will have to be defeated by more direct means. What do you think my agenda may be?

      rudiwaan.joseph - 2012-06-03 09:25

you tell me! Is it superior military power, freedom of people you obviously dont care a hoot for or religion?

      fred.fraser.12 - 2012-06-03 12:16

What meant was we as human beings don't have to grow with so much pain and suffering. We can evolve with less of this. It's heartbreaking what happens in our world.

  • Michael - 2012-06-02 23:51

This is a crazy world...we will never have peace.

      rudiwaan.joseph - 2012-06-03 06:54

Michael. You are so right, for as long as fred represent the interfering, bullying, fact twisting israeli and american regimes no nation wii have peace! Once they are done with their dilusional obsession with islam and arabs to will find a new target. They appear to be busy with a modern day 'colonialisn'. They have convinced themselves that they want to see all arabs to be ''free'' and that this allows them to interfere in a sovereign state and tell them what to do! Whilst the UN and Nato sees no reason for military action these two countried will stop at nothing to go to 'war' with who they like to gain the riches of the countries they target' sounds like modern day ''Viking Pirates'' to me'

      Larry - 2012-06-03 07:04

Easy for you to say Rudiwaan, from your nice life in Durban hey. What is so wrong with Middle East Arabs being 'free' from despotic rulers who hog all the oil revenue for themselves. You would support their freedom but for the fact that the USA and Israel supports their freedom as well. You may as well go and enlist in Assad's Syrian army and begin killing innocent Arabs because they want the same freedom as Isreali's and Americans.

      rudiwaan.joseph - 2012-06-03 07:15

larry, you too enjoyed the ''apartheid freedom'' of SA and still b*tch and moan when things dont go your way here! Im not the one thats interfering in others business. When did you and fred, america and israel become so concecern about arab freedom worldwide? Whats you agenda because we not falling for ''window dressing''!

      Larry - 2012-06-03 07:38

A free and democratic Middle East can choose sensible and rational governments, not the thieving kleptocrat families currently in power for themselves. Democratic leadership progression works on the principle that citizens come first, and maybe some of that massive oil wealth will trickle down. It is working for us in South Africa, why not in the Middle East. Or do you wish that Middle East populations live as blacks did with apartheid? Getting nothing while the establishment elite get everything. Even compared to SA, the Arab despots have taken wealth at obscene levels. Democratic Middle East governments, and a greater middle class citizenry, will have a positive influence on international relations, starting with Israel. Whereas impoverished and uneducated masses are just fodder for Islami fundamentalism. My motive is peace for all mankind.

      Larry - 2012-06-03 19:26

No Lesego. Israel is run by a democratic government where its citizens are free to choose that government. Israel and its citizens are not being governed by unelected kleptocrat families and monarchs. You are particularly dense. You get the memory foam award because this is common knowledge stuff and you have been made aware of it on several occasions, but like a goldfish, you come back again with no memory. You have no debate so you just spew any junk that comes to mind. This is a competition of ideas and logical stringing together of threads, not just banal one liner comments. One would think that at least you are getting an education, but then you must work on retaining some memory of what you are being taught.

      jaba.kov - 2012-06-04 06:24

Israel is, in fact, a progressive and liberal democracy. Like other western democracies Israel is imperfect, but when mistakes and injustices occur they are usually, in the end, rectified thanks to the country’s extensive checks and balances. Unlike neighboring Arab countries Israel has free elections, a free press, full religious freedom, and full rights for women and minorities, including gays. In Israel there are Arab legislators in the Knesset, Arab diplomats in the Foreign Ministry, Arab generals in the Israel Defense Forces, and also Arab judges. In fact, it was an Arab District Court judge (George Karra) who recently sentenced former Israeli President Moshe Katzav to jail, and an Arab Supreme Court Justice who upheld the sentence (Salim Joubran).

      Larry - 2012-06-03 19:29

  • mngundu - 2012-06-03 13:20

Iran has the right to peaceful use of nuclear technology. It is very hypocritical of the world powers to use double standards in this regard. Personally I think that a nuclear Iran (weapons) will not be bad; just look at Pakistan and Indian, only rethorics but no wars.

      fred.fraser.12 - 2012-06-03 18:20

You're confusing the Iranian regime with the Iranian people. The IAEA, which is the UN's nuclear agency, says the regime is hiding two nuclear facilities.

Iran has stated (not just once) that they want to wipe a nation state of the United Nations of the map… If they didn’t continuously say that I don’t think anyone would disagree with them going nuclear. Iran like Malema possess the same craze that will/has brought them down, a very big mouth

      fred.fraser.12 - 2012-06-04 07:59

Not sure why you think I "sit in the states".

  • mkyounus - 2012-06-03 21:29

like i said before, israel is a rogue state and must be wiped off the map!!!!they are a worst form of apartheid since south africa and have violated international law time and time again.they do not listen to the united nations(puppets) and go on bullying the helpless palestinians.

      jaba.kov - 2012-06-04 06:54

There is no place in the world, that discrimination and racism is as institutionalized as in the Arab world, against Christians, Jews, Hindu's, Buddhists, Women, Gays and other smaller minorities. Funny you decide to snub a democratic & free nation like Israel

      fred.fraser.12 - 2012-06-04 08:03

Again, it's more than obvious that the racist is you. Not only that, you're a genocidal racist, the lowest form of human-being. What are you thinking man? Why would you choose to do this to yourself.

      Larry - 2012-06-04 09:03

mkyounis needs to assuage his humiliation. His whole religion and god is otherwise rendered weak and ineffective.

  • Zack - 2012-06-06 08:29

People just don't get it. Every country has a right to there own defense, so if building a nuclear bomb makes Iran feel safe so be it. Oh and just by the way the Iranian military won't be such a push over as many people think, The people believe in their leaders and therefor they will fight for their country without regrets. So if the U.S decide to attack them they are going to have a big fight on their hands.

      Larry - 2012-06-06 09:03

On your first point I agree. Israel has a right to its own self-defense. So if Israel and the USA need to ensure that Iran does not develop a nuclear bomb, as a matter of self-defense for Israel, then Israel can rightly ensure this by any means at its disposal, based on the inability of Iran to recognise Israel's existence and its stated intention to destroy Israel.
