Belgrade - Conservative Isa Mustafa became Kosovo's prime minister on Tuesday, fronting a grand coalition of old rivals.

His Democratic League party and former prime minister Hashim Thaci's centre-left Democratic Party agreed on Monday to form a coalition government, which also includes smaller parties.

The deal ended a six-month stalemate after the 8 June snap elections.

Thaci is now deputy premier and foreign minister. He is expected to run for president in 2016.

Kosovo, which has a mostly Albanian population, declared independence from Serbia in 2008, nine years after fighting a war against Belgrade's rule.

The two sides agreed to normalize ties under EU mediation, though Belgrade continues to claim sovereignty over its runaway province.
