Israel: Gaza missiles from Libya war

2012-10-17 23:04

Jerusalem - A top Israeli defence official says Gaza is being flooded with sophisticated weapons from Libya and that the anti-aircraft missile fired last week at an Israeli helicopter probably originated there.

Yossi Kuperwasser, who directs the Ministry of Strategic Affairs, says "significant" numbers of weapons have been smuggled into the territory from Libya since the fall last year of dictator Muammar Gaddafi. The country is awash in weapons after the eight-month civil war and has weak central authority.

Palestinian militants in Gaza launched a shoulder-fired Strela missile at an Israeli helicopter last week, but missed. It was the first such launch from Gaza.

Kuperwasser said on Wednesday that Israel has long assumed that Gaza militants have kept such weapons, but probably only fired them after they amassed a large enough stockpile.

Video implies massacre of prisoners by Libyan rebel fighters New evidence collected by Human Rights Watch implicates Misurata-based militias in the apparent execution of dozens of detainees following the capture and death of Muammar Gaddafi one year ago. Bodies of apparent execution victims found at the Mahari Hotel in Sirte on October 22, 2011, the day after the final battle with the Gaddafi convoy. At the time of the killings, the hotel was under the control of Misurata-based opposition fighters, who spray-painted the names of their units on the walls of the hotel. Human Rights Watch researchers visited the site on October 23, 2011, and found the decomposing bodies of 53 victims, all male, still at the scene. Among evidence they collected is a mobile phone video clip filmed by opposition militia members that shows a large group of captured convoy members in detention, being cursed at and abused. Human Rights Watch used hospital morgue photos to establish that at least 17 of the detainees visible in the phone video were later executed at the Mahari Hotel.

one would easily asses that after the killing of ambassador stevens, that the nato countries are now targeting the NEW LIBYAN GOVT through their media sites to drum up support to invade libya (just as I said they would).

Wow, all I got from this article is Isreal revealing the origins of the rockets and missiles which is a new development . Its not extrodinary nor implausible to think that weapons would find their way to other conflict area's in the aftermath of the Libyian revoltution, the elected govt and international organisations are working to get rid of these weapons as well as disarming remaining militia's and fighting remaining insurgents. It says nothing about anything else.
