Israel air strike targets Gaza militants

2012-01-21 11:30

Gaza City - An Israeli air strike targeted Palestinian militants in the Gaza Strip early on Saturday, sources on both sides said.

A security source from the Islamist Hamas movement which controls the territory said that the warplanes struck in the south of the enclave, close to the border with Israel.

The raid targeted militants from the Popular Resistance Committees who were laying explosives near the border, witnesses from the hardline faction told AFP.

The witnesses said there were no casualties among the militants but the Israeli military said that it had confirmed a hit.

"A short while ago, Israeli army aircraft targeted a terrorist squad in the southern Gaza Strip," a statement said.

"The squad fired rockets seconds before being targeted. A hit was confirmed."

After a three-week lull at the turn of the year, there has been an increase in the number of incidents on the Israel-Gaza border in recent days.

On Friday night, Gaza militants fired a rocket into southern Israel without causing any casualties or damage.

On Thursday, a military spokesperson said that Israeli forces arrested three Palestinians overnight as they tried to enter Israel from the southern Gaza Strip.

A Palestinian security source said just two men had been held, and said they were captured inside Gaza by Israeli special forces.

Also on Thursday, the army said two rockets fired from Gaza hit the southern Eshkol and Shaar Hanegev regions, without causing casualties or damage.

Since the beginning of the year, the army says it has counted seven rockets fired into southern Israel.

On Wednesday, an Israeli air raid on northern Gaza killed two Palestinians and wounded a third.

The military said the raid targeted a group of men who were laying explosives along the border, but Palestinian officials said they were setting traps for birds.

good, I just hope those cowards did not place woman and children in front of themselves.

      goyougoodthing - 2012-01-21 11:48

      Who are the cowards?

      Barry - 2012-01-21 12:23

What do call the IDF taking great delight in destroying innocent Palestinian lives ?

      Barry - 2012-01-21 12:36

@Ian.. People of our own ANC government were once called "terorists". They were not anything of the kind. They were freedom fighters. The Palestinian military are not terrorists. They are freedom fighters

      Barry - 2012-01-21 12:46

@Antony.. So you agree the IDF are a terrorist organisation. As you know the IDF love killing innocent Palestinians

      goyougoodthing - 2012-01-21 12:51

What about the 'punks' if you will, who invaded another country and set up their own? There are 2 sides to this story and I can't find a reason for Israel to exist? Please explain this.

      Dirk - 2012-01-21 13:01

Barry- "Our own ANC government" Speak for yoursel. When "Sipho" sneaked accross the border and planted landmines on farm roads and blew up a 35 yr old womean and her two children, aged 2 and 9, he is a terrorist. When vermin and scum walk into Magoos bar and blows up young girls, then yes, he was, he is and he will always remain a murderous terrorist.I can go much further. I could include those who aided and abetted them and their sympathisers.

      Anthony - 2012-01-21 13:10

no barry I do not agree, you wrong again. you do know there is a diffrence between a terrorist and freedom fighter. If you do not know it do yourselve and the world a favour and go find out,

      Barry - 2012-01-21 13:20

@Dirk.. My stand point is way more popular and correct than yours in this country. It is a pity people like yourself still think and happily deluded South Africa is ruled by apartheid. Your examples of "terrorism" were actions taken in a war for freedom by our freedom fighters, not terrorists. Go read the history books. You will see I am correct

      Barry - 2012-01-21 13:22

@Antony. Lets agree to disagree. Clearly you are a right wing extremist which is your right in our democratic country.

      Anthony - 2012-01-21 13:53

agree got samething for you to think about "if I,am sitting in a room with 100 ppl and I say the sky is blue witch it is, but they all say no it,s green, well then now what the sky is green why because 1/100 say so, we both know they are wrong and guess what you call that demo........

      Barry - 2012-01-21 15:03

@Anthony.. It does not matter what colour the sky is as innocent peoples lives do not rest on the arguement. The majority of people in this country and in this world know what Israel is doing in Palestine and to its people is a travesty and impossible to justify. If you prefer to be in the minority it is your right and choice to do so.

      Dirk - 2012-01-21 17:53

Barry- I am not in a popularity contest- I seek and speak the truth. Things in SA, from ethics to principles in general, have deteriorated to such an extent, that if you find your opinion in line with that of the majority, you are due for a serious introspection.

      Dirk - 2012-01-21 19:32

You may not realise it due to your blindness, but your views cause far more problems- blindness deafness and foolishness.

      Barry - 2012-01-21 20:12

@Dirk... You the one who wants me "exterminated" as I don't agree with your views. I suppose the book you cuddle encourages you that this is the way right ? Trust me its you who has serious delusional problems.

      Anthony - 2012-01-21 21:30

@ barry & riaad common sense is the only thing you two lack, did you not read what I said. what can I say , read your Quran "bible"

      Barry - 2012-01-22 05:29

@Anthony I reiterate from a another comment You know to be fair that both the Bible and Quran, have caused more death and destruction of the human race than you would like to admit. Lets agree to damn both versions of history to the scrap heap.

      Anthony - 2012-01-22 08:18

      Jaba - 2012-01-22 13:31

Barry seems to live in a world of his own invention, devoid of 10,000 rockets since 2005, suicide bombs, shooting attacks, kidnappings, and other terrorist attacks. Rather, this fictional world is apparently filled with a peaceful Hamas. While we, too, wish this to be true, it simply is not. To paraphrase the late US Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan: Individuals are entitled to their own opinion, but not their own facts.

      Dirk - 2012-01-22 14:14

Jaba- Barry is the esteemed chairperson of the Brain Donors Society of South Africa- all to Palestine

      @ Jaba @ Dirk Bless

      Merven - 2012-01-23 07:26

No Barry, you just don't understand the difference between a terrorist and a freedom fighter. A freedom fighter target military targets, terrorists target the general public, like the ANC did with their shopping centre bombings etc.

      ruimteseerower - 2012-01-23 09:49

barry what about destroying inoccent israely lives a story always have 2 sides

      Hugh - 2012-01-23 11:17

Not to forget the Church attack, where the mighty MK stormed into a church service, machine gunning the members and threw in numerous hand grenades. They fled for their lives in fear as one (1) man returned fire with a 38mm revolver. The fearless mighty MK soldier, who strut their stuff in cammo at all ANC rallies. Cowards and murderers of woman and children. How the mighty have rewritten history.

      Barry - 2012-01-23 11:41

@Merven... I see. So you are saying our government in SA is run mostly or in part by former terrorists? I will have disagree with you on that. I am afraid you will be in minority on this one. Your argument is is very weak.

      Barry - 2012-01-23 11:55

@ruimteseerower Mcbride was a freedom figher, if he was guilty of terrorism he would have been charged with the crime, I do not believe he has. Do you agree ? You are correct I have never been to church and never will. I will never support organizations Christian, Jewish, Islamic, what long as their main goal is death and destruction of other. Even your comments prove ALL RELIGION SUCKS.

      Barry - 2012-01-23 11:58

@Hugh.. Your comments. Seem they come from very racist, white south african pining for the good old days of apartheid ruled south africa. Please correct me if I am wrong.

      Paul - 2012-01-23 13:41

@Barry 1. You are to stupid to even try and understand the difference between a freedom fighter and a terrorist ... ANC and Harmas fighters who take on the Armies or Police Force are freedom fighters and deserve respect, but those ANC and Harmas terrorists, who target unarmed civilians in shopping malls, buses, pubs and churches are COWARDS and deserve no respect let alone mercy ... KILL THEM ALL ! 2. You insult both Muslims and Christians for their faiths ,blaming them for all the evil in the world but what you and your fellow NON-BELIEVERS CHOOSE TO KEEP QUITE ABOUT is all the GOOD THINGS these FAITHS do!!! Yes there has being over the years "MEN" of both faiths that have used their faith for their own agendas ... but to IGNORE all the good these faiths offer the world and do for the SICK POOR and STARVING every single day year in and year out JUST GOES TO SHOW YOUR IGNORANCE AND STUPIDITY !!! As long as we have fools like you on this eath, who think that they have all the ANSWERS and REFUSE to see the OTHERSIDES point of view and respect their beliefs and understand their plights ...WE ARE LOST !!! GROW UP YOU CHILDISH PRAT !!!

      Barry - 2012-01-23 14:30

@Paul.. You can insult me as much you like. Your attacks only reflect on yourself. However I do however agree with you all regions do have positive influences on many peoples lives. Try and tell that to the radical christian zealots that infest this site. All they want is to destroy other races of people or people following other religions. According to them if a person is not a Christian or Jew then that person needs to be exterminated. Yes that words has been used in comments on the article. I repeated I am totally not religious. I do how respect anyone following their religion of choice. Unlike the radical bible cuddlers commenting on this article.

      Paul - 2012-01-23 15:16

@Barry OK ... I'm sorry for the insults , but you brought them upon your self with silly comments like these... EG : 1."Your examples of "terrorism" were actions taken in a war for freedom by our freedom fighters, not terrorists." Let me tell you that in war, if a soldier walks into a house and guns down a unarmed family, in civilsed countries it is consider a crime against humanity. I hope you now can understand the difference between a freedom fighter and a terrorist !!! 2."Lets agree to damn both versions of history to the scrap heap. AND "Even your comments prove ALL RELIGION SUCKS." So you BARRY in all your WISDOM want to DAMN all the GOOD that The Bible and The Quran give to this world, because some people were Crusaders or Osama Bin Laden's ? And you call us NARROW MINDED BIGOTS .... Barry think a bit before you comment ... all things and people have their good and bad sides !!! I see much more good coming from religion than evil ... thats the message that both books give us's the Bin Ladens and Constantine's of this world that corrupt that message !!! THINK BARRY THINK !!!

      Barry - 2012-01-23 18:48

@Paul.. We have a lot more in common than you think. Please try be a man and for once and take ownership for the insults you dish out. Your point 1. What do you think the freedom fighters should do given that they confronting enormous odds ? Harsh Language ? If suicide bombing is all they have, I say, good on them. If they have people who want to do it and they have nothing else then go and do it. Palestine is EXACTLY like that. Your point 2. Yes. I stand bye that. Religion does a lot more harm than good world wide. I also see you cannot help yourself insulting me again. And you insult me again and again...WELL done.

      Paul - 2012-01-24 09:41

@Barry A bit sensitive are we , where did I insult you in my second response? Oh if telling you to think is a insult is an insult then that's your problem , not mine. In your 1st response you say "However I do however agree with you all regions do have positive influences on many peoples lives." and in 2nd response "Yes. I stand bye that. Religion does a lot more harm than good world wide" make up yor mind Barry. You insult youself with your stupid comments!!

      Barry - 2012-01-24 12:03

      @Paul... Ha Ha.

      goyougoodthing - 2012-01-21 13:11

Dirk, you forget who invaded who. Israel is occupying land that they have no right to. They were promised a homeland because Germany killed them during the Holocaust, in another country, on another continent. One day the Palestinians wake and up there are Israelis everywhere saying get out...?

      Barry - 2012-01-21 13:32

@Dirk.. Your wish for me to be exterminated just gives a poor reflection of your self and your beliefs. Thankfully I live in a civilized democratic country, South Africa, unlike your favorite place, illegitimate, marauding, murdering Israel.

The Anti- Israeli Anthony. Egyptians all around the Israelis. You obviously missed the 6 day war. The Israelis were outnumbered 4000:1, yet the IDF literally chased them out of their army boots. Thousands upon thousands of boots were strewn all along the Suez Canal.

Nowadays it sounds like a joke. Its time for the majority of Muslims to take their religion back form these fundamentalists who have hijacked it

      Barry - 2012-01-22 21:00

If the radical marauding bible cuddlers stopped advocating war, what a wonderful world it would be

  • David - 2012-01-21 12:15

It sounds like fiction, isn't? It reminds me of most motion pictures, where you the main character (read Israel) is always potrayed as this goodie-goodie who is brave and always victories over his enemies (Hamas). But one thing certain is that when there are casualties on the other side (i.e.occupied side), it is such that it reverberates throughout the World. You will never hear of any noise on the side save for moanings by those who have been hit hard.

      Jaba - 2012-01-22 13:27

The OBVIOUS deceit in this latest ploy to destroy "the infidel in our midst", is that the PA will say ANYTHING right now to get UN acceptance, THEN fall back on the old "...but Hamas never said they would stop trying to destroy Israel". The fate of Israel is a harbinger of the future - as if any additional examples should be needed since the Armenian genocide not so very long ago and the numerous more contemporary examples of the Islamist view of "co-existence"

      Jaba - 2012-01-22 13:25

Just more Islamofacism The irony, Arafat turned down an offer that would have created the Palestinian state. Furthermore, in the Gerrymandering of the Middle East by the UK, France and Dutch after the dissolution of the Ottoman Empire, did in fact create a de facto Palestinian state - it is called Jordan! ...despite Jordan's refusal to acknowledge the fact with their autocratic rule! Now, as they declare that their state will be "Jew Free", Israel should immediately adopt the same stated policy of the Palestinians and immediately close ALL checkpoints and refuse enter to ALL Muslims who are dependent upon Israel for employment and then watch as the Palestinians howl in protest over their "we can make the rules but we don't have to follow them" mentality. Funny how the US & the West is expected to provide the foundation for economic aide to SO many Arab nations, but the Arabs don't do squat to support their "own people" as they follow their 8th century tribal orientation - all the while demanding to be accepted into modern society while they meanwhile do NOTHING to build an economy and an infrastructure in their slum where the only skills learned are bomb making..

      Gerhard - 2012-01-22 15:45

To this day muslim suicide bombers are so crazy as to kill their own people. Innocent women and children in the market place. What cowards. How sick can you be? Hadjis don't have balls.

  • Rhys Vetner - 2012-01-21 12:40

Hamas needs to learn that if you fire rockets into a sovereign state (Israel) you WILL receive retaliation- and all the news shows the PA women and children dead- but do they ever lift the bodies up? no! if they did, they would get a surprise

      Riaad - 2012-01-21 15:39

A stolen "sovereign state"? For Israel to exist, two-thirds of Palestinians living in Palestine for centuries had to become refugees. Thousands were killed and ethnically cleansed to make way for European Jews. The Palestinians are being ethnically cleansed from their own land on the basis of 3000 year old Old Testament verses that describe a vastly different context. Jewish Settlers keep pouring in to take more and more of Palestinian land. Where's your objectivity? And can you blame certain Palestinians for wanting to attack Israel when the Jewish state expropriated their land decades ago and is still doing it on the basis of racist Zionist philosophy? And Old Testament verses referring to conditions existing more than 3000 years ago are tendered as "scriptural justification" for the ethnic cleansing of the Palestinian people?

      Jaba - 2012-01-22 13:34

How short people's memories are... Whenever people talk about the Israeli question, it inevitably ends in a chicken and egg style argument about who occupied where illegally first. The bottom line is, if Hamas and the other political groups in the disputed regions began acting more like civilised political parties rather than terrorists with the sole aim of killing Israeli civilians (remember, if Israel had the same aim this whole issue wold have been put to bed years ago due to their military might) then Israel would not have a leg to stand on and the US and the west would have no choice but to put pressure to bear on Israel to make concessions to the now truly peaceful and democratic Palestinians. I have never and can never support any terrorist organisation who supports the killing of innocent civilians no matter how just they believe their cause.

      Merven - 2012-01-23 07:34

@Riaad, if the Palestines stop firing into the Israel parts targeting women and children there will be no retaliation and the outside world will have much more sympathy with them.

      Riaad - 2012-01-21 15:40

Or so your biased opinion goes. Just about everywhere where Muslims became agitated and violent, is where a non-Muslim power interfered first. Palestine - Britain and USA and now Israel Iraq - USA Afghanistan - USSR & USA Egypt - British colonisers Bosnia – The Serb rapists Tunisia - French colonisers Philippines - Americans Nigeria - Nato interference due to its oil and strategic advantages ad nauseum Jihaad is a defensive, not an offensive measure. Terrorism is not Jihaad - it is evil.

They're not happy in Yemen. They're not happy in Afghanistan. They're not happy in Pakistan. They're not happy in Syria. They're not happy in Lebanon. And where are they happy? They're happy in England. They're happy in France. They're happy in Italy. They're happy in Germany. They're happy in Sweden. They're happy in the USA. They're happy in India. They're happy in Norway. They're happy in every country that is not Muslim. And who do they blame? Not Islam. Not their leadership. Not themselves. THEY BLAME THE COUNTRIES THEY ARE HAPPY IN!

      Merven - 2012-01-23 07:39

@Riaad, and the fact that more than 50 of the world's most wanted terrorists were found in Iraq and Afghan is of course not mentioned. The terrorists attacked America way before the war on many occasions and Iraq and Afganistan gave them refuge. If you harbour criminals you support them and should be treated the same as them.

Basically the land belongs to Israel. The League of Nations set the land aside for a Jewish homeland under the Balfour Declaration following WW1 in 1917. Due to Islamic-Arab protests this land was divided to form Jordan for the Palestinians/Arabs and Israel for the Jews. When the Jews declared themselves as a Nation in 1948, they were immediately attacked by their Islamic-Arab neighbours. By the grace of God they were able to protect themselves. Hundreds of thousands of Jews fled from Israel's neighbours for safety, and Israel managed to take care of them. But when the Palestinians tried fleeing back to their Muslim-Arab countries, they were denied entry. They were forced to stay in Israel as political pawns. Now they live there as refugees, and yet Palestinians in Israel still have more rights than in their own Muslim countries. Israel is a tiny piece of land compared with Jordan and the other Muslim/Arab middle eastern countries. The Jews occupied the land before the Palestinians, the land is legally theirs by the League of Nations (UN precursor) and by Divine right. The Prophet Joel foresaw this hearing God say "I will gather all nations and bring them down to the Valley of Jehoshaphat. There I will enter into judgment against them concerning my inheritance, my people Israel, for they scattered my people among the nations and divided up my land." (Joe 3:2). God will judge those nations who divide His land for His chosen people, Israel.

i agree Paul... If anything Israel isnt the occupier in Gaza, Hamas is! Imposing Sharia Law upon its citizen, using them as human shields. Launching Rockets/Mortars/Missiles into Southern Israel from various locations inhabited by innocent arabs (schools, mosques, hospitals etc). One needs to ask yourself would Israel lauch counter airstrikes into Gaza at these sites where these missiles were fired? The answer is no, they wouldnt, everyone is quick to judge Israel but turns a blind eye to the thousands of missiles fired into Israel from Hamas controled Gaza... Simply they have imposed checkpoints and the so called "wall" upon themselves, it was only after 2007 when Hamas took control of Gaza and started attacking Israel that these security checkpoints were erected. The people of Gaza have themselves to blame for this so called "occupation". If they stopped firing missiles into Israel, they would have all the freedom they desire... but these "Palestinians"/Arabs from a young age were born to hate the State of Israel and the Jews...

Many Jews (including some Zionists) opposed Balfour's proposal and it may have died a natural death for lack of support had it not been for the holocoaust. This tragedy breathed new life into Balfour's proposal, to the dismay of the then British government who saw it a betrayal of the Palestinians. Establishment of a Jewish state was approved by the United Nations despite Britain's abstention and what has followed is history.

      Riaad - 2012-01-21 15:49

They've changed the Bible dozens of times and you are still quoting OT verses to justify the mass killing of the Palestinian people? You're forgetting that Bible tampering is precisely one of the reasons why Elohim/Yahweh/Allah revealed His Final Revelation - the Holy Qur'an. “There is no book in the Old Testament which has suffered more from corruption that Hosea. There is hardly a single verse of which the reader can be sure that it has not been more or less altered.” -Prof. T.H. Robinson in “An Introduction to the Books of the Old Testament,” pg. 354. “There is probably in the world no other book which has remained twelve centuries with so pure a text.” -Sir William Muir in “Life of Muhammad”, vol. 1 pg. 22

      Paul - 2012-01-21 16:12

Mthuthuzeli, that is simply not true. It was the Arabs who rejected the Balfour Declaration. They wanted the whole land. Here is a quote from Wikipedia from the "Balfour Declaration" article. "The Arabs expressed disapproval in November 1918 at the parade marking the first anniversary of the Balfour Declaration. The Muslim-Christian Association protested the carrying of new "white and blue banners with two inverted triangles in the middle". They drew the attention of the authorities to the serious consequences of any political implications in raising the banners.[27][Need quotation to verify] Later that month, on the first anniversary of the occupation of Jaffa by the British, the Muslim-Christian Association sent a lengthy memorandum and petition to the military governor protesting once more any formation of a Jewish state.[28] On November 1918 the large group of Palestinian Arab dignitaries and representatives of political associations addressed a petition to the British authorities in which they denounced the declaration. The document stated: ...we always sympathized profoundly with the persecuted Jews and their misfortunes in other countries... but there is wide difference between such sympathy and the acceptance of such a nation...ruling over us and disposing of our affairs."

      Paul - 2012-01-21 16:22

Riaad, that is also not accurate to say the Bible has been changed many times. Go and read up on the Mazoretic scribes and how meticulously accurate their copying standards were. Also the Dead Sea Scrolls found in the past 70 years, but which were originally written from between 150BC to 70AD confirms that the OT has not changed in any significant way since it was compiled. It is quite amazing really! Likewise the accuracy of the New Testament can be confirmed by comparing the writings of the early church fathers and the manuscripts through the ages. So the Bible is accurate and God inspired. I am not using Scripture to justify war though. I am merely saying what God's view on the matter is. I hope the world will come to see that the land is legitimately Israel's, and that they will enable the Palestinians to find a safe home amongst their own people in their own land. May Israel and their neighbours live in peace.

      goyougoodthing - 2012-01-21 16:57

Basically Paul your argument about divine rights and scripture is hogwash, invented fairy stories.

      Riaad - 2012-01-21 17:02

“An overwhelming majority of the ‘various readings’ of the MSS (manuscripts) of the New Testament were from the very first intentional alterations. The New Testament in very early times had not canonical authority, and alterations and additions were actually made where they seemed improvements.” - Encyclopedia Biblica, vol.4 pg. 4980 “The evidence is therefore, that the original text of the Christian Greek Scriptures has been tampered with, the same as the text of the LXX (Old Testament) has been…” – New World Translation Bible, Foreword. “The scribe may alter a text to agree with his theology. This is a very rare form of corruption, but was definitely employed by Marcion, a heretic.– LD Twilley in “The Origin and Transmission of the New Testament”, pg.44 “We cannot too often remind ourselves that the Gospels were circulated in manuscript; editorial insertions and additions were easy…” – Bishop Earnest William Barnes in “The Rise of Christianity”, pg.122 “Secondly, the Bible as we have it is a much edited body of literature, and the various editors have treated their earlier sources with considerable freedom, nor have they always been very skillful in their treatment.” - Reverend E. Griffith Jones (BA)D.D quoted in Peake’s Commentary of the Bible.

      Mthuthuzeli - 2012-01-21 17:11

@Paul There's the little matter of the Philistines, who were there before the Israelites, not to mention a few other tribes who got in the way and had to be eliminated before the "promised land" became the kingdom of Israel. Expelling the indigenous Palestinians from the land, the zionists severed a relationship that people had to the land for over 4,000 years, uninterrupted, since before Abraham. The minority indigenous Jewish community in Palestine, that lived there for the last two thousand years, was an undistinguishable people from its Christian and Muslim Palestinian brethren, until the European settlers arrived with their white supremacy and racism. The biblical promise is Israel's only claim to legitimacy. But whatever God meant when he promised Abraham that "unto thy seed have I given this land, from the river of Egypt unto the great river, the Euphrates," it is doubtful that he intended it to be used as an excuse to take by force and chicanery a land lawfully inhabited and owned by others. But this would not be the first time that documents written by humans were used to justify land grabs.

      Paul - 2012-01-21 17:52

@Riaad Regarding the reliability of the Bible, Josh McDowell gives a good explanation in Evidence that demands a verdict. He shows that the accuracy of the Bible is supported by archaeological finds, copying methods of the OT, the huge number of NT manuscripts compared to any other ancient writing, comparing manuscripts, the early church fathers' writings and the Dead Sea Scrolls. It is a very strong case. I suggest you give it a read. Although there are discrepancies between the MSS, carefull study reveals where the errors have crept in, and enables scholars to know which ones are accurate. That's the beauty of having tens of thousands of MSS to compare. We can also tell where and when they were written to track any errors coming in. Also the errors that have occurred are minor, and do not altered the meaning of any doctrine of Christianity. So I can confidently say that the Bible is accurate and reliable.

      Paul - 2012-01-21 17:57

@Mthuthuzeli WRT the Philistine/Palestinian argument, please see my comment below which refutes that misunderstanding. I am not anti-Palestinian, I just don't want us to mix them up with the Philistines.

      Paul - 2012-01-21 18:14

@Riaad I must say I take exception to you saying "Elohim/Yahweh/Allah" as if they Judeo-Christian God of the Bible is the same Muslim God of The Qur'an. I have read the Koran and found our Gods to be quite different. I respect people of all religions including Muslims, however Muslims and Christians are distinct faiths with different Gods. The Christian God is a triune God (Father, Son & Spirit) of love, grace and mercy. Does that sound like Allah to you? I understand that Allah was one of many "gods" worshipped in the pre-Islamic Saudi Arabia, and that Muhammad cast the other idols out of the Kaaba and chose Allah (the moon god) as the one God of Islam. Is that right? Wikipedia says "In pre-Islamic Arabia, Allah was used by Meccans as a reference to the creator-god, possibly the supreme deity.[20] Allah was not considered the sole divinity; however, Allah was considered the creator of the world and the giver of rain. The notion of the term may have been vague in the Meccan religion.[8] Allah was associated with companions, whom pre-Islamic Arabs considered as subordinate deities. Meccans held that a kind of kinship existed between Allah and the jinn.[21] Allah was thought to have had sons[22] and that the local deities of al-?Uzza, Manat and al-Lat were His daughters.[23] The Meccans possibly associated angels with Allah.[24][25] Allah was invoked in times of distress.[25][26] Muhammad's father's name was ?Abd-Allah meaning "the slave of Allah"." Your thoughts?

      Riaad - 2012-01-21 18:39

@Paul Let's not forget that Bible content was only finalised at around 380 CE. The Church decided what is 'God's Word' over a period of centuries. Church councils were held to either validate or reject a gospel account. In the end, the Church decided on the "Canonical" four we find today. Even the only NT evidence for the most fundamental Trinity doctrine - 1John 5:6-7 - was found out to be a later addition to the text, in other words a deceitful Church interpolation to prove Trinity is biblical. Read Friedman's "Who wrote the Bible?" to see how two versions of OT accounts exist and are often contradictory. Contradictions abound in OT text. Only in Islam is textual tampering not an issue - due to the public's participation in preserving scripture due to Qur'an memorisation even by children as young as 6 - and this is the true miracle!

      Riaad - 2012-01-21 18:57

@Paul Feel free to continue this debate via e-mail. In short, the OT God Elohim (or Allah in Arabic) is not only a God of Love, Grace and niceties, as you Christians would so love to believe. Just read Judges ch.19 for instance. God punishes! Also, the pre-Islamic Arabs remembered Allah from their ancestor Ismaeel (Pbuh) although they forgot His Attributes and had received no scripture - until the Qur'an. You have fallen for anti-Islamic propaganda which claims that Allah was a name for a 'moon-god' and that there was an idol named "Allah" in the Kaabah. Just read your posting again - it's not even self-consistent. Even today we see similarities between the Semitic languages: eg. Peace - Shalom - Salaam God - Eloh - Allah

      Paul - 2012-01-21 19:57

@ Riaad I don't get it. I thought that Muslims regard the Bible as one of their God inspired Holy books, and yet you keep criticising it. Something I found odd reading the Qur'an is that it calls Mary a virgin who gave birth to Isa (Jesus). Sura:66:12 states that Jesus was born when the spirit of God breathed upon Mary, whose body was chaste. So if Mary was a virgin who was the father of Jesus? Where did his male chromosomes come from? The verse makes it plain that the spirit of God conceived him, doesn't it. So that would obviously make God his father, and Jesus the Son of God.

      Jaba - 2012-01-22 13:42

The Qur'an relates the words by which Moses ordered the Israelites to conquer the Land:"And [remember] when Moses said to his people: 'O my people, call in remembrance the favour of God unto you, when he produced prophets among you, made you kings, and gave to you what He had not given to any other among the peoples. O my people, enter the Holy Land which God has assigned unto you, and turn not back ignominiously, for then will ye be overthrown, to your own ruin.'" [Qur'an 5:20-21] Moreover - and those who try to use Islam as a weapon against Israel always conveniently ignore this point - the Holy Qur'an explicitly refers to the return of the Jews to the Land of Israel before the Last Judgment - where it says: "And thereafter We [Allah] said to the Children of Israel: 'Dwell securely in the Promised Land. And when the last warning will come to pass, we will gather you together in a mingled crowd.'" [Qur'an 17:104]

Some people say the Palestinians come from the Philistines, who arrived in the land of Israel around the same time as the Hebrews and therefore also have a right to the land. So who are the Philistines and Palestinians? The word Philistia/Philistines is from ‘pelesheth’ (Hebrew). This means “rolling, migratory”. Philistines: were Mediterranean sea people, settled in Canaan at same time as patriarchs, ruled 5 cities in Gaza, but never had a fixed border or nation, were annihilated or absorbed by the Assyrians & Babylonians between 800-500 BC. There is no record of the Philistine language or culture. They are no more as a distinct people. Where as ‘Palestine’ is the Romanised version of ‘Philistine’. Roman authorities renamed the Judean Province as “Palestine” after crushing the Bar Kokhba revolt in the 2nd century AD. They did this to rub salt in the wounds of the Jews. The region of Israel was known as Palestine from then until 1948. Therefore, Palestinians are actually mostly Arabs living in Israel/Palestine, but not Philistines!

      Riaad - 2012-01-21 17:00

So what? Even if you are correct, the people in this region were ethnically-cleansed and still are, until today. Jewish settlers still stream in and take up house on bulldozed property of Palestinians against International Law. Please don't play the labels game. People who are native to the Holy Land are suffering based on Zionist interpretation of altered and corrupted scripture.

  • Mboneni - 2012-01-22 01:02

Palestinian militants can not be compared to a liberation war in sa,they are plain terrorists. In sa we were fighting to have a vote in south africa not in another state.Palestinians must learn that firing rockets will only delay their dream of becoming a state one day, they were once offered statehood by the united nations and refused so they must first blame themselves for being divided on the issue of statehood. They must try to negotiate a way out of their plight, two state living side by side is the starting point

      Mthuthuzeli - 2012-01-22 08:22

How do you suppose they continue with the negotiations whilst Israel is continuing with the settlement construction (further annexation) on land that is supposed to form their state. Look at the map of israel/Palestine from 1967 and how that map has changed over the years because of Israeli land theft. The Palestinians know that Israel has no intention of ceding any piece of land in what the call eretz Israel because the zionist ideology is against this and the actions on the groung speak for themselves. Should Palestinians be standing outside the thief's office with a placard for the next 20 years? Social justice will arrive when social injustice becomes an expensive luxury!

Asamatter of interest. The land which is today referred to as Israel and the areas around it were a hot dry desert in biblical times and even further back to 4000years ago. Sadly, ladies and gentlemen, there were no permanent inhabitants living on that land but a few itinerant nomadic tribes passing through. There was not much water to sustain life and cultivation or farming was out of the question. 2000 years ago there were improvements in the weather conditions due to global weather patterns changing and that is why the Bible states that there was abundance. The earliest inhabitants were migratory Palestinians but few were permanent residents of the area. In terms of history we must not refer to Palestine as that small area called Israel only. Jordan was also part of Palestine as well as Syria and parts of Saudi Arabia and Turkey. From a historic point of view the Palestinians have a greater say over Palestine than any other nation or group. That was destroyed by England's attempt to appease the Jews by implementing the odorous Balfour Declaration and the concomitant lines drawn in the sand.

      Jaba - 2012-01-22 14:00

u live on the moon zion - like the company you work for. I trust you understand that the TRUE Palestinians are the Jews. The Arabs co-opted the name (and the identity) in 1966. I remind you that during the Mandatory period, the British referred to Jews as "Palestinians." The Arabs were just always referred to as "Arabs." During World War Two, when the call went out to form a Palestine Brigade, the only people who signed up were -- you guessed it -- Jews. The Arabs were aligned with the Nazis, in case you didn't know. That said, the ersatz "Palestinians" prompted six wars -- all started by the Arabs and won by Israel -- and have engaged in seven decades of unrelenting terror, visited both against Jews in Israel and in the Diaspora. They come from the Hejaz in the Western Arabian Desert. Their stories of lush orchards and olive groves are just so much fantasy. If you want to know what Israel looked like before the Jews of the First and Second Aliyot came and made it verdant, just read Mark Twain's "Innocents Abroad." He speaks of a Palestine that was desolate and abandoned, a bleak and horrible place. It was not until the Jews came and fought back the desert in the south and drained the swamps in the north that the Arabs decided to invent a history to which they have no right. They're still inventing themselves. They are not "Palestinians." The TRUE Palestinians are the Jews. The record is replete with this fact.

      Jaba - 2012-01-22 16:52

Palaestina is the name that the Romans gave to the country that the Jews have always known as Eretz Yisra’el (the Land of Israel), and when Greek or Latin names (or other words) are borrowed by Hebrew, the combination st is normally transliterated as samekh tet. But Palaestina is ultimately derived from ‘Philistines,’ and the Hebrew spelling with shin tav is intended to reflect this etymology. It seems that the Hebrew word Palestina, thus spelled, first came into being when British administration of Palestine began in 1920, and it was feared that the use of Eretz Yisra’el as the country’s official Hebrew name would antagonize the Arabs. Philistines are not, never have been Palestinian. lastly, change your name zion

Religion is the root of all evil. It always ends up being a pissing contest.

      Paul - 2012-01-22 19:00

@Nurse I take it you believe in God then, seeing as you admitted to the presence of evil. Evil is the opposite and abscence of moral good. And I don't think good/evil fit into Darwin's Origin of Species right? So if good/evil didn't evolve they must point to the existence of a moral creator God and an evil enemy. As you rightly point out though, man-made religion sadly abuses their "faiths" for their own agendas. Religion is dead, but a relationship with God brings life.

Hey Bianca, It worked like a bomb. Caught the first sucker hook, line and sinker. The fishing here on the moon is great and the suckers even swallow the sinker out of pure ignorance. Bianca, you know, we have a small minded nation that crawl to facebook research level. Read at the bottom of my last entry. The name is JABA

      Bianca-Anne - 2012-01-22 15:39

I saw that and I was laughing myself out of a depression ... Depression cause we are surrounded by people that what to consider themselves Israelites cause they also the chosen Volk. What always seems funny is that they plagerise material from the Internet that actually contridict their own views ... They normally build their arguments on their restricted knowledge and try to improve it by researching on the Internet and when they write it down, they have no idea what they were saying. I assume they did not read my comment of Friday - did not scroll down, maybe did not know how ... cause if they did, they would not have revealed themselve as an IDIOT.

      Gerhard - 2012-01-22 16:19

The only anti-semitic people are the Israelis. They hate all their semitic neighbours.

      Zion - 2012-01-22 16:28

OY VAY Bianca In a sense it is so funny and hilarious butonthe other it tends to highlight the mentality of our nation. Sadly our nation will always rise to their hind legs to defend the indefensible. Wait for the next Dagga saga then you will see what I mean. This issue has come a long way and is entrenched, like Apartheid, in our white national psyche and probably will be there forever. Yet we always lie to extricate our faltering ego's. Will see you in********** town, trouble is the moon is 238855 miles from earth, petrol is expensive and I would hardly like to hike.

      Jaba - 2012-01-22 16:55

Zion & Bianca revealed themselve as an IDIOT. get a room

      Zion - 2012-01-22 17:19

OY Vay Jaba, I see you are just not big enough to admit you made a fool out of yourself. In your small mind you went out of your way to humiliate myself by going the facebook way. That has been done about 6 times already and you were caught for a sucker and made a fool of yourself. Seeing that my facefook is not used much you have a free hand to it. That is if you are prepared to fly to the moon. Thanks for the laugh anyway. OY VAY Think there will be a rush to see my facebook by your contemporaries. That is ok. As for my name, well let it haunt you. hahahahaaa

      Ask - 2012-01-22 20:04

@Jaba - Perhaps you should take a break... The Zionists were also aligned to the Nazis...

      Mthuthuzeli - 2012-01-22 22:45

      Hear hear Gerhard!

      Jaba - 2012-01-23 00:46

LOL haha... worked like a bomb, caught for a sucker, who? how? nothing i said was wrong, all facts - however your only retaliation is that the hook line / sinker line... what exactly did you catch there in welcom? if you trying to sound stupid - well then full marks for the old bugger :)) your just a sad case, nothing more nothing less... btw as fisherman the most your ever gona catch is a cold

      Zion - 2012-01-23 14:25

Bianca-Anne: What exactly was he looking for? That is the question. I have learnt from other intrusions into my facebook and subsequently removed most info relating to my job or qualifications because people like our friend here like to use it to their own advantage. Ironically, in this case I down loaded the material from the Britannica. Back in Kimberley I used the same material to correlate the Southern Migration of the Bantu People caused by Temperature increases and it was rather valid this time around. My facebook is left open so all can go have a freebie gawk.

      Zion - 2012-01-23 14:29

Dunno about facebook but this guy will never be my friend. I would never trust him.

      Zion - 2012-01-23 14:52

Bianca-Anne. Just a touch of hypocrisy: our friend here had a go at you in connection with your grammar yet the clown cannot spell Welkom. His version is "Welcom" Welkom never had an English name in its history.

      Jaba - 2012-01-23 15:04

K ZION... IF YOU NOT GONA DO IT I WILL! Bianca will you go out with zion? The man is besotted with you.

      Zion - 2012-01-23 17:19

Jaba, Kerist you are just plain stupid, I have never seen something like your mentality in my entire life since 1935. My dearest Jaba BIANCA-ANNE IS MY DAUGHTER, TWIT. See what happens when you make assumptions and jump to conclusions? Well I say you gave us a laugh we will never forget. I am engaged to the person that shares my moniker. hahahahahahahahaha TATA.

      Zion - 2012-01-23 17:23

Dearest friends, especially those that were so fruitful with their thumbs down mentality: Your hero expects me to go out with my DAUGHTER. Now that is what I recommend: Give him a thumbs up.

      Bianca-Anne - 2012-01-25 21:30

Maybe all should take a break - The Air strikes at GAZA is no means for us to get into a panic. Jabu, it is just views ... I respect yours and you don't respects mine and we can tease but in the end it does not really matter. Yes, Zion is my Father ... You would have seen the P in my name it is the same as Zion's surname. We share a view views but politically we don't share the same views at all since we respect that we can differ. Just take a break Jaba and everyone else ... much more things to worry about.

Riaad islam's claim to be the fasted growing religion is actually a bit misleading. In reality it is currently the the religion that is mostly been forced on to others. Muslims force the religion onto their children and then threaten them with death if when they grow up realise how evil and despicable the teaching of mohammad are and wish to renounce the religion. Despite this threat of death by stoning the figures actually show there are more muslims converting to christianity than christians to islam. If the countries with muslim governments were less backward and had a more modern view to freedom of religion I can only suspect muslims would be converting in their millions. So in affect you are proud of the fact that muslims are enslaved to allah

  • Gerhard - 2012-01-22 18:55

Why are most muslim countries poor?

      Merven - 2012-01-23 07:56

Because like in SA and in the old Roman Catholic Church the top leaders steal the money.

  • Ask - 2012-01-22 19:57

Perhaps you should consider another side to this plot..

      Mthuthuzeli - 2012-01-22 22:43

Normam Fickelstein, the holocaust industry. Thank you very much. Look out for Noam Chomsky as well! Or Robert Frisk or John Pilger, or Craig Roberts, etc. Now those are learned people who aren't beholden to any particular power.

      Barry - 2012-01-23 06:29

      What a load of bull

      Ask - 2012-01-23 07:53

@Barry - apologies if this doesn't satisfy your gullet; it is what it is...

      Barry - 2012-01-23 19:31

Apology accepted. And it is NOT what it is

  • Ballito - 2012-01-23 11:43

merven cause the western pigs stoled their wealth(oil)

  • Hugh - 2012-01-23 12:05

If you want to find conflict? Go to a Muslim country, any one will do, they are all the same. The concept of peaceful tolerance and co-existance does not exist in their culture, spurred on by their "bible" to kill all infidels, and gain acceptance to heaven. With a few virgins to boot. What an incentive. Corrupt from the onset.

      Barry - 2012-01-23 12:55

@Hugh.. Your comments only show your ignorance and hatred for human beings you know nothing about.

      Hugh - 2012-01-23 15:43

@Barry,you're right of course. This world wont have any form of peace with you and like minded crawl the earth. You spit on true Muslims, misinterpret the Koran to satisfy your greed and blood lust. Yip you got it, I hate everything you and your kind stand for. Having fought in many conflicts and seen your type, violence is the only thing you understand.

      Barry - 2012-01-23 18:53

@Hugh...On the contrary. I am not religious at all. Go try and speak to these messed up people that think all Palestinians are terrorists.

  • MiriamBawden - 2012-01-23 14:59

    G-d bless the IAF!

      Barry - 2012-01-23 19:29

Any thing military that is Israeli..has to suck

  • Andre - 2012-01-23 15:04

HAMAS does not want peace. It has no respect for their own people. As long as they continue firing rockets and mortars at Israel they will be attacked. They hate Israel more than they love their children! Only they can stop this and they won't. Their only objective is to wipe Israel off the face of the earth. It won't happen!
