Israel calls for more sanctions on Iran

Jerusalem - Israel responded on Wednesday to a lack of progress in talks aimed at curbing Iran's nuclear programme by demanding that the West impose stiffer economic sanctions on Tehran and hinting anew that a military option was still on the table.

Six world powers and Iran failed to secure a breakthrough at talks in Moscow this week, the third round under the latest diplomatic initiative, and set no date for more political negotiations.

"It is time for the United States and Western powers to impose more severe sanctions in the oil embargo and financial sectors in order to stop Iran's nuclear development programme," Vice Prime Minister Shaul Mofaz of the centrist Kadima party said in a written statement after talks in Washington with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

Mofaz, a former defence minister and military chief, said that in addition to economic steps there was a need "to continue to prepare all other options", an oblique suggestion that a military attack to prevent Iran developing a nuclear weapon remained a possible course of action.

While Western powers suspect Iran of trying to develop the capacity to build a nuclear bomb, Iran says its nuclear programme is destined for energy production alone.

Before reports of the Moscow talks breaking up, Mofaz was quoted as telling reporters in Washington that any use of military power "should be the last option, and I believe that this option should be led by the US and the Western countries".

Risk of war

Mofaz heads the largest party in Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's right-leaning ruling coalition, since the two leaders forged a partnership last month to avoid threats by their opponents to seek an early election.

Western concern that Israel, which regards Iran's atomic project as an existential threat given its calls for the demise of the Jewish state, might resort to force has fuelled efforts to continue discussions with Tehran.

Technical talks with Iran have been scheduled for 3 July in Istanbul, but no further political talks have been agreed, and some experts have said the risk of war will increase unless diplomacy is renewed.

Israel is widely believed to be the only Middle East country with nuclear weapons.

On his four-day visit to the US capital, Mofaz is also seeking US help in arranging a meeting with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to try to renew peace talks deadlocked since 2010 over Jewish settlement building in occupied territory.

Well wait a minute here News24. What about this: “The fatwa from Imam Khomeini [the founder of Iran's Islamic revolution] said ‘all Islamic countries have Islamic blood,’” Forghani wrote. “Therefore the Islamic world should rise up and shout that a nuclear bomb is our right, and disrupt the dreams of America and Israel.” Official Iranian media outlets published a commentary Sunday titled “The necessity for the Islamic world to have the atomic bomb,” laying the groundwork for Iran’s refusal to accept limits on its illicit nuclear program.

@bones.mine. Yes. Iran says it wants to wipe Israel of the map, and therefore they should not have nuclear weapons. If Israel has them it does not matter since they have not threatened to wipe anyone of the map. Therefore they can have them.

Aisha - iv asked on several occasions for the link where Ahmendinjad mentioned wiping Israel off the map, none could produce it, please help me out and post it

      Aisha - 2012-06-21 11:51

@jameel.patel.39 Referring to comments by Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, the leader of the Islamic revolution, Admadinejad said, "As the imam said, Israel must be wiped off the map."

      jameel.patel.39 - 2012-06-21 12:19

Lol Aisha this is written document by someone else quoting Ahmedinjad, I thought this was captured on video, he did say he wants Zionism off the map though

      Aisha - 2012-06-21 12:32

      henry.bosman.5 - 2012-06-21 12:33

The Iranian regime, distinct from the Iranian people, adjusts elections to hold onto power. Effectively it has stolen the Iranian government from the Iranian people. It funds the Jihadist movement that has killed and maimed hundreds of thousands of innocent people, mainly Muslims. It is actively supporting Bashar Assad's brutal oppression of Syrians wanting nothing more than the basic human right to vote. It supports the stoning of women. It openly calls for the elimination of Israel, and it denies the Holocaust, the single biggest attempt at human genocide in human history. It should not be allowed to have nuclear weapons.

Fred its again you ,i asked months ago for the video link, you failed to produced it, yet you sticking to a statement that you have no evidence to back up, unless you can now finally produce and put this case to rest... or are you going to send me an article by some newspaper quoting Ahmedinjad

      jaba.kov - 2012-06-21 16:51

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad repeated his call for the destruction of Israel.

      jaba.kov - 2012-06-21 16:52

      Or this one

      jaba.kov - 2012-06-21 16:54

Or this one Jameel: you can search for others yourself..

      fred.fraser.12 - 2012-06-21 17:57

It's sad when a woman supports her own oppression

      fred.fraser.12 - 2012-06-21 17:58

It's also sad when a man is blind to the oppression of women and enables it

      fred.fraser.12 - 2012-06-21 18:57

Jameel, I'm not here to educate or prove anything to you. It's your choice whether or not to blind yourself to the abuse and destruction of your own people at the hands of an election-adjusting, terrorism-funding, woman-abusing regime.

      Larry - 2012-06-21 22:10

It seems that Jameel has removed himself from answering the facts that he begged for.

Local Israeli news keeps making headlines on news24. Why is it that every Israeli article aimed at local Israeli consumption is published in South Africa? Israel knows nothing about the ANC, Zuma, corruption, unemployment, crime or Malema... but we need to know everything about Israel? This overload of information is laborious and suspicious... Aljazira negatively advertises Israel on a ‘per hour news articles’ basis - why is news24 following Aljazira's lead (no pun intended)? Time for a financial audit of news24 I think.

      jameel.patel.39 - 2012-06-21 11:49

Sanctions on the 2nd worlds largest oil producer and possibility of war is not worthy of news Jaba...

      Aisha - 2012-06-21 11:55

@jaba.kov I like how you think, but they have partnered so it makes sense that they would follow their lead.
