Israel ends silence on Syria bloodshed

2012-05-28 18:11

Jerusalem - The latest wave of bloodshed in Syria has forced Israel to end its long official silence on events taking place across its northern border, the foreign ministry spokesperson told AFP on Monday.

"In light of the exceptional character of the massacres committed by the regime, Israel has ended the media silence which it has been observing until now," spokesperson Yigal Palmor said.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday voiced his revulsion over the killing, while accusing Iran and its Lebanese militia ally Hezbollah of being accomplices.

He was "revolted was by the incessant massacres conducted by Syrian President Bashar Assad's forces against... civilians... which continued over the weekend in the town of Houla," Netanyahu's office said.

The United Nations says that at least 108 people - including 49 children and 34 women - were slaughtered in the Syrian village of Houla on Friday and Saturday, many of them gruesomely blown to pieces or shot dead at point blank range.

Netanyahu's office had not previously officially commented on the violence in Syria.

Israeli leaders, fearful of the uncertain future likely to follow the fall of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, have been restrained in their criticism so far.

Defence Minister Ehud Barak, however, said on May 16 that Assad was "doomed," and he urged the international community to increase pressure on his embattled regime

Palmor said that the Israeli change of tone was not a response to criticism from Assad's opponents that Israel was seeking to support him.

"We are not responding out of opportunism," he said. "Anyway both sides see us as Satan. The Syrian regime accuses us of supporting the insurgents and the insurgents say that we back Bashar al-Assad."

Israel and Syria are officially in a state of war and are in dispute over the Golan Heights, which Israel captured during the 1967 Six Day War and later annexed, but there has been no major incident along their shared border since the 1973 Middle East war.

More than 13 000 people have been killed since an uprising against Assad erupted in March last year, according to monitors.

Get out of the West bank,,,,,,,,,,,,,Then talk, Not that we will ever listen anyway.

If the people you support invade Israel in full military invasions, which they did in the 1960's, and they loose, by the rules of war they loose the territory from which they were pushed back. Moral of the story: don't invade your neighbors. Choose peace instead. Moral of the story to you: educate yourself before jumping to faulty conclusions.

      Larry - 2012-05-28 20:57

Fred is very well educated. Only the half educated will not recognise this. To answer the comment. Israel will remain in the West Bank and continue to punish the Palestinians harsher and harsher. More and more Israeli's will settle in the West Bank the longer it takes for Palestinians to accept Israel's terms of peace. I DONT CARE ABOUT THE PALESTINIANS. I speak for majority Jews and Israel. I dont care about them and their misery because they have caused it for themselves. I dont care about the Palestinians because they dont care about Israel and Jewish people. They can collectively shove it up a camels hump.

      fred.fraser.12 - 2012-05-28 21:29

You'd have to elaborate for me to respond Patrick

      Larry - 2012-05-28 21:35

Yes, I dont care about people who preach hate and murder against me and Israel. The only thing that can remove Israel from existance and its position of power in the region is a nuclear attack. Whoever attemts this will be obliterated as well. So Israel is going nowhere and her enemies will be stewing in their humiliation until such time as they realise this. And you, Lesego, will still be talking nonsense in forty years time when you become an adult.

I haven't seen you hypocrites post on the Syrian stories.

      fred.fraser.12 - 2012-05-28 19:11

Your posts on the Syrian threads are delusional and complicit in the slaughter of Syrian families and the destruction of Syria, Patrick.

      Dragan - 2012-05-28 20:03

How about the US sending more arms to Bahrain to help put down the protests there, whilst the queen invites the king of Bahrain to her dinner party? Oh and how about the US propping up the Saudi dictator sending him billions in arms and supporting his crackdown of Saudi protesters there? I don't support Syria but when The US and Israel are the ones pointing fingers I wonder. How do you suppose Syria must be liberated.. Bomb them to rubble kill 1 million as in Iraq leave the country exposed to a new breed of gangster factions and then say hey look we got rid of the bad man though.. Oh yes we also expect repayment in oil.. Lets not forget the US put Mugabe in power and one year later he killed 30000 Ndebeles.(1982) hidden by the media The US continued to love him for twenty years after this! why because he was their puppet. Only when he switches sides early millennium to the Chinese did he become the villain. You people and you saber rattling make me sick. pretending to be humanitarian and moral. You are the worst kind. two faced snakes.

      fred.fraser.12 - 2012-05-28 21:30

"Complicit: Associated with or participating in an activity, especially one of a questionable nature." [Wiktionary] Through your deluded analysis, which at this point is willful and stubborn Patrick, you are complicit with Bashar Assad in the slaughter of Syrians and the destruction of Syria.

      fred.fraser.12 - 2012-05-29 04:19

Dragan, youre another person with a deeply prejudiced and slanted perspective. All you do is bitch about the US and West, find fault, undermine, criticize, even if it means making things up. The US didn't "put Mugabe in power". What are you thinking man. This is the Information Age. Anything you make up can be verified with a couple of clicks. US foreign policy in the Middle East is not perfect by any means. But you fail to understand that the region has only had brutal dictators for decades. It is late in the human rights and democratization process. The freer world has only had dictators to work with in the region. Until now. Thankfully. You should be supporting this, not undermining it. The more you do this, the more you position yourself against positive human evolution, and like Patrick you become complicit in human suffering. Bit a good place to be, or a good thing to do.

      fred.fraser.12 - 2012-05-29 04:21

Not a good place to be, or a good thing to do.

      fred.fraser.12 - 2012-05-29 04:27

Furthermore, NATO has not killed one million people in Iraq. Again what are you thinking man. Everyone with a clear mind knows its Al-Qusida and the Taliban who have been killing and maiming innocent people in Iraq with their car bombs and suicide attacks in public places. If you Wang to be believed, you have to have your facts right. Until then you're just spewing made up nonsense.

      AnthonyfromAfrica - 2012-05-29 06:49

Dragan, Before 'we' make you too sick, the following. If you would just take those silly childish anti Western blinkers off, maybe you would see some reality. The focus is on Syria, as it is at present, the ONLY country in the world, where a ( illegitimate ) government ( in this case an evil violent family ) wants to hang onto power, no matter at what cost. It is not that this thug, has murdered one opposition member, or ten, or one hundred, or one thousand, BUT TEN THOUSAND !!! And this war criminal is prepared to murder tens of thousands more of , mainly unarmed, civilians ! Re Bahrain; the ironi is that if Russia and China had not supported this assad, Bahrain ,today would be a lot closer to a democracy. And please don't insult millions of Zimbabweans with BS, they crossed the borders of their country to escape the tyranny of a CRAZED THUG!

  • Honey - 2012-05-28 20:31

I read the comments from Fred and Patrick and understand clearly that there will never be peace amongst men whilst morons like this continue to attack each other, neither of them being in possession of the true facts! Idiots, both of you for perpetuating this news24 crapaganda!

      fred.fraser.12 - 2012-05-28 21:32

A lot depends on how you're reading my posts. I'm writing them with a gentle demeanor, although my comments are direct and to the point.

      fred.fraser.12 - 2012-05-28 22:16

Not all of my posts are written that way. About eighty percent are.

      jaba.kov - 2012-05-29 07:56

What are the facts then? Fred is 100% right - There will be peace when the Palestinians decide that peace rather than religious war is their route to statehood. And Larry is right as well - the Israelis will only care for the Palestinians when the Palestinians care for themselves first, ie recognise Israel’s right to exist thereby opening the door for peace. The vast majority of Israelis want peace - but are not willing to commit suicide to get it. The Palestinians must renounce terror and choose peace. This is the first time in history that the weaker side (Palestinians) dictate the rules of hostilities; any other nation facing terror would have wiped their enemy out - but not Israel, for Israel strives and hopes for a peaceful resolution. Remember, if the table were turned and the Palestinians held the fighting power then all the Jews of the middle East would have been killed long ago. So what are 'your' facts honey?

  • Michael - 2012-05-29 17:28

Snore blow up the middle east and the world could have a rest from this evil corner in the world.

      Larry - 2012-05-29 20:15

Michael, the war of ideologies between the democratic and free Western World and Islamic fascism is only just beginning. Israel is on the frontline and has halted the spread of Islam into all corners of the planet, where you live as well. Israel is protecting you from this evil, or at least exposing the stealthy creep of Islam into the lands of freedom and democracy. You should be thanking Israel and pledging allegiance, but then the world is still full of bozo's who would sooner shoot themselves in the foot than admit they were wrong.
