Israel launches fresh attacks

2012-11-18 08:33

Gaza City - Israeli war planes targeted two media buildings in Gaza City on Sunday morning, injuring at least eight journalists, including one who lost his leg, medical officials said.

Separately, Israeli air strikes continued in other parts of Gaza, including the north, where two children were killed in raids on homes.

As the strikes continued, the Israeli army said there had been no rockets fired into the Jewish state since 21:00 on Saturday evening, although at around 07:30 there were reports of alert sirens in the south of the country.

And Hamas prime minister Ismail Haniya's office said he had spoken by phone with Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi to discuss the ongoing violence.

The first Israeli strike on a media building came at around 02:00 local time.

Warplanes

"At least six journalists were wounded, with minor and moderate injuries, when Israeli warplanes hit the al-Quds TV office in the Showa and Housari building in the Rimal neighbourhood of Gaza City," health ministry spokesperson Ashraf al-Qudra said.

Witnesses reported extensive damage to the building, and said journalists had evacuated after an initial strike, which was followed by at least two more on the site.

The injured were taken to Gaza City's Shifa hospital. One journalist lost his leg in the attack, Qudra said.

A second hit on a different, nearby media building came around 07:00.

"We have two journalists injured in the Shuruq building, which houses al-Aqsa TV, where there has been an air strike," Qudra told AFP. Al-Aqsa TV is another Hamas-affiliated television station.

Imad Efranji, director of the al-Quds TV office, slammed the incident that targeted the station's facilities as "a new crime against the media."

Separate raids

"It was the media battle that forced Israel to stop its killing of children and civilians last time," he told AFP, referring to Israel's December 2008-January 2009 Operation Cast Lead.

Elsewhere in Gaza, Israeli war planes carried out two separate raids on houses in the northern part of the strip that killed two and injured 10 others, Qudra said.

"Two young citizens were killed and at least ten others wounded in two separate raids on houses in Beit Lahiya and Beit Hanun," he said, putting the Gaza death toll since the violence started on Wednesday at 48.

And another strike targeted a police station in eastern Gaza, injuring eight, he said, without specifying if they were police.

In Gaza City, as the Israeli air force attacked from above, Israeli naval forces opened fire, launching more than a dozen shells towards the shore, an AFP correspondent reported.

Rocket launchers

In a statement, the Israeli military said its aircraft had "targeted dozens of underground rocket launchers" overnight, as well as a "communications antenna."

"A short while ago, Saraya, a Hamas primary training base and command centre was targeted," the statement said.

"A communications antenna used by Hamas to carry out terror activity against the state of Israel, was also targeted."

"Israeli Navy soldiers targeted terror sites on the northern Gaza shore line," the statement added.

Haniya's office issued a brief statement saying: "During a 20-minute phone call between prime minister Haniya and Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi, Morsi described the efforts he has made to stop the aggression on Gaza."

I dont know what to believe in regards to the news coming out of Gaza. Ive seen reports that they shot down an F16 and captured the two pilots, which proved to be false. Seen footage of a man who was apparently so injured that they had to carry him into the hospital, only to be shown walking around unharmed a couple of minutes later in the same clip. Pallywood is out in full swing.

      cameronrh1 - 2012-11-18 08:56

You just need to look at News24's own coverage on the situation. The photo gallery shows a picture of the Iron Dome defence system, and according to News24's caption on the photo it, "military launch a missile from the Iron Dome missile system in the southern city of Beer Sheva into the Gaza Strip". In actual fact it intercepts and destroys missiles fired from Gaza

      smuts.mike - 2012-11-18 09:40

I find it interesting that the news never mentions the 700+ rockets fired by hamas of which around 200 was intercepted by iron dome. I personally feel that the news24 and EWN doesn't cover this story objectively.

      cameronrh1 - 2012-11-18 09:44

@smuts well according to the last report i have seen, its intercepted about 1/3 of them. Iron dome somehow detects the trajectory and determines which one is going to fall within a populated area and targets those ones specifically, not the ones which will be landing in open areas.

      cameronrh1 - 2012-11-18 09:51

Oddly enough i havent seen any mainstream media reporting about the 10s of rockets fired at Israel falling short and landing in Gaza hurting their own population. But then again an Arab killing an Arab is alright, but the moment Israel defends itself its a war crime.

      smuts.mike - 2012-11-18 10:19

Agreed! They also don't mention israel who was willing to temporary hold fire for the egyptian delegation to enter gaza. Yet Hamas continued to fire. I personally feel the local news is one sided. You cant blame Israel for having technologically advanced firepower, and retaliating.

      david.coetzee.77 - 2012-11-18 10:35

I honestly believe both sides is to blame But as stated here no one even mentions the continued firing of rockets into Israel. Why is all the newspapers in the world always just blaming Israel - can it be that they know that Israel as a democrosy might be changeble unlike Hamas that actively hides behind the population so that when Israel reacts they have photographs of maimed children to show? I mean when you fire rockets out of a school playground you should be held responsible if that school gets blown up.

Israel was created in 1948 from 52% of the land formerly occupied by the Jewish and Palestinian people, and Palestine 43%. Most of the Israeli territory was the Negev Desert. Jerusalem fell into neither territory. Palestinians with their unelected, self-serving neighbors declared war on Israel the very next day. In the 1960's they even invaded Israel twice. Full military invasions. The result: Israel survived and pushed them back, gaining territory in the process. This is the origin of what you wrongly call "stealing land". There have been almost daily attacks by Palestinians, incited by their self-serving unelected backers. Palestinians even teach their children at Kindergarten to attack Israel, rather than be peaceful. Children. Kindergarten. From day one, and even today it's wage war on Israel. Israel defends herself. Yes sometimes going too far, which is unacceptable, but self-defense nonetheless. All that needs to happen is for Palestinians to choose peace side by side with Israel. This is more likely going forward now because the unelected dictators are being removed from power by their people, one by one. They will no longer use the Palestinians for their own internal political ploys.

Al Aqsa TV is a Hamas-run television station that promotes terrorist activity and incites hatred of Jews and Israelis. The station, directed by Palestinian Legislative Council member Fathi Ahmad Hammad, began broadcasting in the Gaza Strip in January 2006. Juornalists my ass.....state sponsored terrorists! Before interpreting this report take a look at http://www.adl.org/terrorism/profiles/al_aqsa_tv.asp An extract below.... For years,America have supported Israel both financially and militarily because they perceived they were the innocent victims of hostile and violent neighbors. The US media has, for years, provided extensive coverage of every incident involving Arab-against-Israeli violence. From shootings, to car bombs to suicide bombers, we in America have seen it all. Or have we? Why would rational human beings, given a choice, choose to attack their neighbors rather than live together in peace? More pertinent, why would a rational human being choose to blow himself up rather than live? The Israelis, the US media and our politicians would have us believe that the Arabs are simply not rational. They routinely tell us that Arabs are "religious fanatics" who "hate freedom" or "hate our way of life" to quote George W. Bush. These arguments are fallacious and intellectually bankrupt. The reason for Arab against Israeli violence is simple: The Israelis have been systematically repressing and brutalizing hundreds of thousands of Arabs on a scale unparalleled since World War II I have the proof. Below (at the link) are photographs of the victims of Israeli violence. They depict brutal, violent death, horrific personal injury and devastation of property which is simply unfathomable. ALL of it was perpetrated by Israelis against Arabs. ALL of the victims are civilians. As you view these pictures ask yourself this question: What would YOU or YOUR LOVED ONES do in retaliation for these things? http://www.thewe.cc/contents/more/archive/atrocities.htm extremely graphic, please proceed with caution!

      cameronrh1 - 2012-11-18 09:34

If Hamas put down their weapons today, there would be peace in the Middle East. If Israel put its weapons down, every Arab nation would be climbing in to kill off every single jew they could find. It's a matter of hatred for the infidel, its never been about land or a palestinian country. If it was there would have been a palestinian nation prior to Israels rebirth, but there never was.

You don't seem concerned at all with the fact that every missile fired at Israel is fired with the hope of killing innocent civilians. Whereas Israel tries it best to target specific targets, dropping leaflets warning civilians to stay away from Hamas activitiy, phoning gaza resident warning them that they are targeting a building in that specific area. No other army on earth takes the precautions that Israels does. Yet they are inhumane?

When England was bombed by the germans the RAF bombed them back and when the germans invaded france the French resistance was born. Not too long ago syria fired missiles which some say were stray and turkey's military are justified by the world for their response.\r\nBut when Missiles are fired from gaza into israel territory- intentionally and not just once but for months - its suddenly a war crime for Israel to hit back?\r\nIf this is your attitude then I hope u never have missiles fired at your house lest you shud ever have to determine your actions by the same standards you apply to israel, lest you shud restrain yourself from fighting back.\r\nYou double standard pro palestinian hyppocrit.

\Israel uses sophisticated attack jets and naval vessels to bomb densely-crowded refugee camps, schools, apartment blocks, mosques and slums to attack a population that has no air force, no air defense, no navy, no heavy weapons, no artillery units, no mechanized armor, no command in control, no army and calls it a war. Hamas uses hundreds of inaccurate rockets fired from these densely crowed citys against Israels civilian population. In retaliation Israel uses its "sophisticated" weaponry to specifically target these launch sites and terrorist activity which is taking place in densely populated areas. Hamas is using the people of Gaza as human shields.

      Sharon Gien-Cambier - 2012-11-18 10:03

In that case, knowing this, why would they want to taunt Israel day after day by firing 100s of rockets into Israel....because the Kuran says they have to? as far as Im concerned anyone feeling pity for Hamas is a terrorist themselves. I feel sorry for the innocents because they are the ones that get used as shields. However having said that it doesnt help also to take pictures of the little children hurt in Israel by Hamas attack and put it all over Twitter by Hamas trying to tell the world its a Palestinian baby. Gaza media truth? Here's the truth: Hamas doesn't WANT to talk to Israel, they tell that publicly. They don't tell the militants to stop firing, so in their silence they support it - this everybody knows. See? Didn't need Gaza media for that one.

      joy.moloi.3 - 2012-11-18 10:12

Eve the kids that you kill shoot missiles into Israel ? I guess the death of a 2 year old is necessary collateral damage ? How do you defend the killing of toddlers ?

      joy.moloi.3 - 2012-11-18 10:16

Jumdubai let's hear how you defend the killing of children with tanks and air strikes

      jomdubai - 2012-11-18 10:23

You should pose that question Hamas, because by refusing to talk to Israel and not telling their militants to stop firing, THEY ALLOW, every second, the "killing of children with tanks and air strikes". Hamas has the blood of their own people on their hands because they are absolutely useless and they happily use the deaths of their own people (which they allowed) to seek political sympathy internationally. They use their citizens, who voted for them, as pawns for their own political agenda. ...much like a certain ruling party I know of...

      joy.moloi.3 - 2012-11-18 10:28

@Jomdubai, if I could take your house, kill your kids and tell you that its god will since I'm his chosen person. Will you embrace me or will you fight me with all that you have ? Give palestinians east jerusalem, stop stealing demolishing their houses and stealing their land and there will be peace. There was peace before in that region before the gods chosen people started stealing land.

      cameronrh1 - 2012-11-18 10:33

@joy, what you are describing sounds more like a Jihadist.

      joy.moloi.3 - 2012-11-18 10:45

@cameronrh1 , I guess Nelson Mandela is also a Jihad according to your definition. Nelson Mandela: the freedom of SA is not completed until Palestine is free .

      cameronrh1 - 2012-11-18 10:55

@joy blowing up a Wimpy does amount to terrorism. Killing innocent people who play no part in the situation.

      fred.fraser.12 - 2012-11-18 17:03

  • wendy.n.schmidt - 2012-11-18 10:17

Maybe the ongoing aggression towards Israel by Muslim countries should also be mentioned .. they are defending themselves.

  • joy.moloi.3 - 2012-11-18 10:23

Arabs and Jews stayed side by side peacefully for centuries until this Zionist madness started. They started demolishing arab houses and stealing their land and giving it to east European jews and north american jews. Soon palestinians will get their land back, I can't wait to ride through east jerusalem the capital of Palestinian people. That day is gonna come very soon.

      cameronrh1 - 2012-11-18 10:30

It East Jerusalem is truly their capital why was it not made their capital prior to Israel rebirth? Maybe because a Palestinian nationality did not exist to begin with? One only started to hear about a Palestinian nationality after Israel gained its independence when the surrounding Arab nations tried to destroy Israel and failed.

      joy.moloi.3 - 2012-11-18 10:48

Yes palestine did not exist arabs occupied that area, today they decide to call themselves palestinians. Does that change the fact that their land was stolen and they want it back ?

      cameronrh1 - 2012-11-18 10:56

@joy, its not about land being stolen, it never was. Its about hatred for jews and the fact that their religion tells them they can never live nextdoor to infidels.

      cameronrh1 - 2012-11-18 11:00

@joy and the fact that Israel gave Gaza to the Arabs as a gesture of good faith to try and bring peace to the region only to have thousands of rockets fired from the area proves it as such. Hamas own charter calls for the destruction of Israel. Its not about land, its about religion hatred.

      fred.fraser.12 - 2012-11-18 17:04

Hamas actions remind me of children who kill their parents but then want sympathy because they are orphans.

  • joy.moloi.3 - 2012-11-18 10:36

I was living peacefully and some European land thief stole my land, I tried to get it back, I pulled my gun, I shot one shot, unfortunately the criminal had bigger guns, he retaliated and killed my kids and wife. After that the land grabber told his big brother (a very powerful guy, the whole world fears him) that he was defending his loot. Since the thief and his brother are very powerful, I have to accept that my land is gone for good.\ This sad story is not fiction, its true story, go ask the people in gaza\

      cameronrh1 - 2012-11-18 10:43

Go ask the people of Tibet or Cypress, those are people under real occupation. Firing rockets into Israel till the point you have to have a wall separating the two areas is self inflicted on Hamas part.

      Desilusionada - 2012-11-18 10:54

How can Gaza be stolen when Israel do not own Gaza and has built a fence to protect themselves from Gaza? Please show us on Google Earth where exactly are Jewish houses in Gaza. And tell us why Israel would attack Gaza when they have citizens living there......

      joy.moloi.3 - 2012-11-18 10:56

Israel is also doing nothing to bring peace instead it is pouring petrol on a burning fire. It continuously steals the palestinian land, two weeks back, it was reported that IDF demolished a palestinian house and sold the land to some businessman. Let's go back to the old boarders, give palestinians east jerusalem and if hamas fired even one rocked. I won't have a problem with IDF bombing them to stone age.

      cameronrh1 - 2012-11-18 11:03

@joy, well lets go to Judea and Samaria, the Fatah controlled area. Lets see you sell a house to a Jew. Under their law you will be put to death for that. The very fact that Gaza is under Arab control is an example of how Israel tried to bring about a peace, look what Israel got in return for giving Gaza as a gesture of good faith? Rockets and suicide bombings.

      mike.down.5492 - 2012-11-18 11:04

Joy how come the Jewish temple is underneath the Al Alqsa Mosque. It appears that it was built before Islam even arose. If we take your analogy then settlers in SA conquered SA and the blacks could not say their land was stolen.. What's good for the goose....Israel was always the homeland of the Jews and the entire old testament is dedicated to that and therefore Judaism is fundamentally linked to Israel.

      hudayfah.newman - 2012-11-18 11:26

Are my eyes deCeiving me?Did I just see an atheist using the old testament as proof? signs of desperation hey.

      cameronrh1 - 2012-11-18 12:00

@hudayfa, nope its signs of proof.

      fred.fraser.12 - 2012-11-18 17:04

Are you going to give your land back to the Khoi San, its original inhabitants? OR are you going to continue being an ignorant hypocrite?

  • manqoba.zulu.54 - 2012-11-18 10:57

Let's do our thing Good south africans with high morals and who are civilised, like we always remind Africa, or like we always tell them that only in South Africa you get violence, let's call them names, let's pretend this is happening in Zimbabwe, These people, for doing this are(( barbaric, uncivilised, uneducated, corrupt, rapists, dictators, stupid,)) common guys let's call them names, we are very good in this, maybe we should also blame the current ANC leadership for this:

      cameronrh1 - 2012-11-18 11:06

One actually can blame ANC for this too, with their product laws in regards to Israel. Trying to put people out of business who sell Israeli products, which would ultimately result in the loss of thousands of jobs of Arabs employed in Israel. Destroying the lives of people you are apparently trying to protect.

      manqoba.zulu.54 - 2012-11-18 12:15

Ha ha you are a rea idiot, your IQ must be very low

  • erik.prinsloo.1 - 2012-11-18 11:55

Israel have full rights to defend themselves. They should kick Hamas' behinds big time!!!

  • tshivhombelaf - 2012-11-18 12:15

    Any no flyzone yet?

      moses.mabhida.52 - 2012-11-18 13:05

If there was no rocket zone this never would have started. Israel is defending themselves not attacking. If Hamas stop the rocket policy ther will be no news from this part of the world.

  • arlene.prince.7 - 2012-11-18 13:25

It is a constant battle that has been waging for a long time, how and where will this fight end. I listen to people here in South Africa (and I don’t judge, as everyone is entitled to their opinion) America will be the destruction of the human race , I think we all forget that not so long ago 6 million Jews were murdered and the world watched. I think that we will for generations to come pay for that mistake, as Israel will never allow anyone or anything to threaten their existence again. It’s sad though to know that they are in their actions creating more hatred. I pray for everyone in our world, I pray respect, truth but most offal for forgiveness.
