Israel scores 'direct hit' on Syria

2012-11-12 15:47

Jerusalem - Israel's army fired tank shells into Syria on Monday and scored "direct hits" in response to a Syrian mortar shell that struck the Israeli-controlled Golan Heights, the Israeli military said in a statement.

Israeli military sources said Syrian mobile artillery was directly hit in the incident.

It was the second time in two days that Israel has responded to what it said was errant Syrian fire. On Sunday the military said it had a fired a "warning shot" across the disengagement line, while on Monday it said it had fired back at "the source".

Military sources would not say if the mortar bomb was fired by Syrian army forces or by the rebels they are battling in and around the United Nations' patrolled area of separation.

"A short while ago, a mortar shell hit an open area in the vicinity of an [Israeli Defense Forces] post in the central Golan Heights, as part of the internal conflict inside Syria, causing no damage or injuries," the military statement said.

"In response, IDF soldiers fired tank shells towards the source of the fire, confirming direct hits. The IDF has filed a complaint with the UN forces operating in the area, stating that fire emanating from Syria into Israel will not be tolerated and shall be responded to with severity."

Syrian rebels fighting to topple President Bashar Assad have been fighting his army for months in towns inside and adjacent to the Area of Separation between Israel and Syria, along the disengagement line drawn at the end of their 1973 war.

Technically the countries are still at war, but the Golan, a strategic plateau Israel captured in 1967, has been largely quiet for decades.

History will judge israel and their american backers harshly for their acts in the middle's not surprising to hear most white south africans supporting israel's behaviour, after all they voted for and supported apartheid policies for centuries here at home. Emperors rise and fall and One day soon america will fall and israel will be left naked and at the mercy of their neighbours they are relentlessly terrorising.

Patrick, A member of the violent loony left; MODERRN DAY LEFTIST They are baffling people. They talk about human rights, and yet ally with sexist, racist, violent, gay-murdering, human-rights-hating fascists. They come from a long tradition of western support for foreign tyranny. Their central belief seems only to be that America, and Israel, and the white man, must be wrong. All of their decisions are based on that false axiom. As a result, they are enemies of the free countries, friends of third-world tyrants, and enemies of the suffering people all over the world who are forced to live under tyrannies.

Actually this was an obvious case of the Syrian "rebels" shooting at Israel, trying not to kill anybody but trying to give Israel an excuse to start a war with the Syrian government which the USA will then be obliged to join in and fight on Israel's behalf. It's all a plot to get the US to topple the Syrian govt and to replace it with some tame "rebels". Israel and the US oil companies would love that, as well the the possibility that Iran will join such a conflict, because then the USA can destroy Iran for Israel as well and the oil companies could steal those oil fields also. Syria has nothing to gain and everything to lose by expanding the war to include the Israel/US war machine, while the "rebels" have everything to gain from an expanded war. Don't be such a simpleton - there is more to this than some dumb Arabs with time on their hands.

You outlook is narrow minded. I do not have to have been anywhere to support something, I can read comments and papers from both sides and decide. And whats blind about defending yourself?

      devon.riley.52 - 2012-11-12 17:25

      fred.fraser.12 - 2012-11-12 21:17

Israel was created in 1948 from 52% of the land formerly occupied by the Jewish and Palestinian people, and Palestine 43%. Most of the Israeli territory was the Negev Desert. Jerusalem fell into neither territory. Palestinians with their unelected, self-serving neighbors declared war on Israel the very next day. In the 1960's they even invaded Israel twice. Full military invasions. The result: Israel survived and pushed them back, gaining territory in the process. This is the origin of what some wrongly call "stealing land". There have been almost daily attacks by Palestinians, incited by their self-serving unelected backers. Palestinians even teach their children at Kindergarten to attack Israel, rather than be peaceful. Children. Kindergarten. From day one, and even today it's wage war on Israel. Israel defends herself. Yes sometimes going too far, which is unacceptable, but self-defense nonetheless. All that needs to happen is for Palestinians to choose peace side by side with Israel. This is more likely going forward now because the unelected dictators are being removed from power by their people one by one. They will no longer use the Palestinians for their own internal political ploys.

      gert.swart.393 - 2012-11-12 22:09

Israel did not defend it's borders. That was land they stole from Syria in the first place.

      Bruce - 2012-11-13 01:08

Opinions formed out of sheer emotion are bound to be thinks, its better if you lot blocked your emotions and started analysing the facts of the Israeli-Palestine conflict logically. A good start maybe checking out what the UN security council has had to say over the years(unless, you have no regard for the UN), it may also be with your while to see what the human rights groups (mostly based in the west by the way) working in the middle east have to had to say about what's going on there on the ground..the mainstream media is feeding you lies, when will you take it upon yourself to find out the real truth?

      larry.lachman.54 - 2012-11-13 06:33

The UN speaks with the voice of a majority third world and Islamic dictatorships, enjoying the democratic nature of the institution which they deny their own citizens. The UN is a farce, and therefore superpowers have the veto, to protect the vulnerable from the backward idiots of this world.

The only thing keeping Africa and the Middle East down is the very idea of imperialism, with its pseudo-victimhood.

      Bruce - 2012-11-13 11:51

@larry, Imperialism, is an english word bro, it is defined as \the creation and/or maintenance of an unequal economic, cultural, and territorial relationship, usually between states and often in the form of an empire, based on domination and subordination\ you should look it are not very bright are? Do you mean to tell me 'imperialist' is the only word you saw in my last post? Get real and try to engage on an intellectual level, otherwise your rants here are just a lot of noise.

      larry.lachman.54 - 2012-11-13 15:34

Bruce almighty. The leading democratic countries of this world are powerful because their system of government empowers their citizens to advance themselves through freedom. The failing un-democratic countries of this world are weak because their system of government impoverishes and enslaves their citizens. The UN is a democratic institution corrupted by non-democratic members who poison world politics. I choose to side with the democratic West. If it is to be labeled 'imperialism', the act of democratising tyrranical regimes, then I am all for it. And I will communicate on my level so try to fit in.

      fred.fraser.12 - 2012-11-13 17:11

Bruce, bottom-line: it's not very bright and is self-defeating to maintain imperialist beliefs. Where would Asia be had it done that? Yet our academics and you want to maintain it. If they and you continue, expect South Africa to be less than it could be.

Anyone who is interested in human behavior I recommend Robert Sapolsky's lectures from Stanford University. They are available for free on YouTube. One of the points he makes is that, in the animal world, there is a "tit for tat" rule which also applies to humans. The only difference is that humans have the intelligence to seek understanding, which can break a vicious cycle of violence and non-cooperation. It is really eye opening.

Why is everyone focusing only on the incidences of the last 200 years? This battle has been going on for at least 2000 years, and both sides have slaughtered, raped, tortured and killed their neighbors by the thousands and hundreds of thousands, and the same two reasons are always exsistant... "They did it first." and "we are more holy". What was it originally all about? A difference in opinion on the same deity we are all trying to please? Or is it possibly to avenge the horrible things that we have done to each other in the past? This is never going to stop until there is total annihilation, and seeing that we are already capable of Nuclear war and possibly worse, the next step will affect all man-kind and the only planet we have. One thing that's for sure is that once we are finished blowing eachother up, the wise and neutral Chinese are going to take over the world. Believe it.

Have a look at Mao's Cultural Revolution too, the backdrop to Communist China that followed, and modern-day neo-Communist China.
