Israel suspends officer who hit protester

2012-04-16 13:00

Jerusalem - The Israeli army said on Monday it has suspended an officer who hit a foreign activist in the face with his gun, in an attack that was condemned by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

"Lieutenant Colonel Shalom Eisner has been suspended until the conclusion of the inquiry which has been opened," a military spokesperson said.

The assault took place on Saturday during a bicycle ride in the Jordan Valley near Jericho which involved Palestinians and foreign activists.

According to footage a protester posted on YouTube, Eisner is seen suddenly smashing his M-16 rifle into the face of a blond demonstrator in an apparently unprovoked attack.

The images were picked up by an Israeli TV station late on Sunday, sparking condemnation from Netanyahu, and dominating the headlines in Monday's papers.

"Such behaviour is not characteristic of the soldiers and commanders of the IDF [Israel Defence Forces]," Netanyahu said in a statement released late on Sunday.

"It has no place in the IDF and the State of Israel."

Chief-of-Staff Benny Gantz also condemned the attack which he said would be "thoroughly investigated and treated with the utmost severity".

The military described the incident as "very serious" and said it was looking into "the circumstances leading up to this incident as well as on its repercussions", a spokesperson said.

The activist is reportedly a Danish national who arrived in Israel two months ago to join a Palestinian solidarity movement.

Quoting a military source, Israel's Channel 10 television said the officer apparently lost his patience as he and his troops tried to turn away cyclists shouting anti-Israeli slogans and waving Palestinian flags from an area defined as a closed military zone.

Very democratic and peace loving ..Yah rite!! Not one of his colleagues reprimanded him or showed any concern for the injured. They must all share the same mindset as the offender.. who in turn share the same mindset of their leaders.

      Jaba - 2012-04-16 15:27

Let's not forget that although the Lt. Col will be exonerated, since he was defending himself, only a true democracy would suspend until further investigation. Could you imagine what would happen in Syria? The officer would probably have been sentenced for not killing the protester.

      Fred - 2012-04-16 15:39

Geez, Anwar, still vocal on the Israel threads, but not a peep from you on the threads about the crazed Jihadists and Middle East dictators in your midst who have KILLED hundreds of thousands of Muslims. You continue to be obsessively wrong, part of uninformed popular thinking.

      Fred - 2012-04-16 19:08

Don't threaten Israel. You'll feel safer and more confident then.

      Larry - 2012-04-16 21:33

That little chap got a step-back smack. Serves him right for getting into the face of an IDF officer. Hardly, what one would call brutal savagery. Do you remember when people were thrown to their deaths from rooftops in Gaza during the brief civil war after Israel withdrew from the territory. Elections were held, Hamas won, and chased and killed Fatah members by tossing them to their deaths from buildings, to ensure that they would never be challenged in ellections again. Democracy Arab style - very short lived. My point - some would rightly label that 'brutal savagery', but a smack on the lip with a rifle but is just a tickle by comparison.

      Larry - 2012-04-17 11:53

Nothing stupid about making comparisons, Lesego. This is how we judge events to be mild or severe. What is stupid, is to judge things in isolation to serve a particular agenda. My point is well taken by intelligent folk. This excludes you of course. And, of course the admirable Israeli government will condemn such an act of violence, because as with all actions, restraint is the hall-mark of Israeli behaviour, whether annoying activists or even hard-core enemies like Hamas. Thanks for the opportunity to point this out.

      Anwar - 2012-04-17 12:00

@Fred You think that by commenting here on the Israeli oppression, it somehow signifies my support of the Arab Monarchies and their rule. Assumptions.. Assumptions. Lets get something straight, the Arab monarchies are no better than the Zionist opressors, in fact it was the Zionist oprressors that awarded the Arab leaders soveriegnty in their lands and the establishment of its Monarchies. We speak out against Zionist oprression becuase we want all people , Palestinian Jews, Palestinian Muslims, Palestinian Christians.. all Palestinian people to live under no oprression in their own land. It does not belong to the Zionists. The Arab monarchies are merely puppets of this Zionist regime, in order to stop the trouble you need to cut off the head of the serpent, which is the illegitmate Zionist rule in that region. this is not a religious agenda, it is political. get that straight before you make any assumptions

      Larry - 2012-04-17 13:16

All good Anwar. Israel proper (not including West Bank and Gaza) is majority Jewish and this is a Jewish national homeland. It is a democratic society with democratic freedoms for all religious and ethnic groups who are lucky enough to hold an Israeli passport. The issue of the West Bank is a remnant of the 1967 conflict, whereby Israel conquered various regions in Lebanon, Syria, Egyptian Sinai Peninsular and the West Bank Gaza areas. The Sinai and Gaza were returned for peace (which holds to this day with Egypt and failed with Hamas in Gaza). Israel wants nothing more than to withdraw from the West Bank, but it must be on Israel's terms, since they are the victors in a war started by the Palestinians and neighboring Arab countries. The terms are that East Jerusalem is annexed, as is now the case (and will remain to be so). There WILL be an Israeli military presence on the border with Jordan. There WILL be peaceful co-existence between Israel and the future Palestinian state with full recognition and acceptance of Israel and its Jewish character. West Bank Jewish settlements WILL remain and its inhabitants will be afforded dual Israel and Palestinian citizenship and protection. There WILL be Palestinian Jews just as there are Israeli Moslems and Christians. There WILL be peace, tolerance and respect, or there WILL be ongoing oppression meted out against Palestinians. This will draw the 1967 war, started by Arabs, to its final conclusion, with the lasting message being thus:

      Larry - 2012-04-17 13:16

      Fred - 2012-04-17 15:39

"The Arab monarchies are merely puppets of this Zionist regime". Now I've read it all. Israel is responsible for the existence of the Arab monarchies. You've taken irresponsibility and blame to new heights Anwar. Have you read ANY history of the region?

      Fred - 2012-04-17 15:42

Secondly Anwar, you are NEVER on the threads reporting about mindless violence by the dictators and Jihadists. NEVER. Yet you're routinely on the Israel and US threads. So you're lying about this too.

      Fred - 2012-04-17 16:51

The longer you lie to yourself and blind yourself, the longer the slaughter of Muslims by Muslims will continue.

      Larry - 2012-04-17 18:29

Bwahaha, Lesego. Dont just read the first line and then throw a tantrum. If you would like a lesson on the difference between a smack on the lips and a serious beating, I will be happy to oblige, if only to verify that you are in fact a young black male impersonating a white person on these threads for some strange psychological short-coming that you have. All are welcome to go onto my facebook profile, but your are a nothing. You do not exist. You are just a pest with nothing to offer. You get a kick out of irritating, like an attention deficient child. Come on, friend request me. Let's see who you really are.

      Larry - 2012-04-17 19:58

What a whining pansy. As a Jew, even without Israeli citizenship, my whole immediate family would be welcome as Israeli citizens, regardless of their race or religion. little do you know, Lesego. Ok, so you are nice and safe in your ignonimity, blogging away as a fong kong whitey. Just answer me one teeny weeny little question, which I requested some time back when you said that you were in the SA defense force. When and where did you do your service? C'mon Lesego. Just answer or you will forever be labeled by me as a fraud.

      Fred - 2012-04-17 20:27

Hi Patrick. :) You're still on record saying, "the world would be a better place if Jews were removed from all walks of life". That's even more racist than Apartheid. It's genocidal.

      Larry - 2012-04-17 20:30

Look lesego, I know that english is not your first language, but where did I say I was not an Israeli citizen. Look carefully and r.e.a.d. it again. Yo, these shogs take some serious patience.

  • Tommy - 2012-04-16 14:40

Well, in SA we shoot them to death for protesting for service delivery - outside a closed military zone. What do you say about that?

      Tommy - 2012-04-17 09:30

Trying to play the "generalization" card are we? If you read the rest of the sentence you will see I refer to service delivery. Now anybody with any grade 3 education will tell you the sentence in its whole refers to service delivery protesters. Are we a bit sensitive today about our chip on the shoulder?

Tommy - 2012-04-17 10:03 Look at the video and compare the force used by the two authorities.

      Larry - 2012-04-17 11:56

      Lesego just got owned.

      Fred - 2012-04-17 20:29

Hi Patrick. :) Removing Jews from all walks of life would be light-handed?

  • Jaba - 2012-04-16 15:04

What was not shown was what went on for over an hour before what you do see. The "activists" using sticks were trying to hit the soldiers. The Lt. Col. had a finger broken and possibly his wrist by the perp. Thus you can even see the way he was holding his weapon. The perp is lucky that he was not hurt even worse than he was. The way the video was edited and shown, of course does not look good, but if a legit photographer would have filmed the entire incident, it would have been clear. This is what happens when good has to defend against evil. Well done IDF.

      Anwar - 2012-04-17 13:46

so where is the original video with all the little bits missed out. I would like to see it please..

  • Jerzy - 2012-04-16 15:43

Apartheid era apologist and Israeli die hard supporters are one and the same.

      Fred - 2012-04-16 15:47

Delusional pseudo-victim and uninformed popular thinking are one and the same.

      Fred - 2012-04-16 18:29

If the Apartheid regime was Muslim I have no doubt you'd have enabled or even supported them such is your level of confusion and misguided tribal loyalty.

      Fred - 2012-04-16 19:09

      Larry - 2012-04-16 20:54

Actually Lesego, you obviously have an answer for your own question, but the rest of us dont know what the hell you are even asking. Are there mosques in Israel????

      Larry - 2012-04-17 18:40

Perhaps if you ask a question that resembled a question, we could answer such question. You need to communicate better. A conversation with yourself is not the same as having discourse with those of stronger intellect, Lesego.

      Larry - 2012-04-17 20:02

Well, at least you are answering to your true name, Lesego.

      Larry - 2012-04-17 20:41

Out of concern for you Lesego, I just do not think it is psychologically healthy for you to continue pretending that you are a white person. This gives the impression that you are somehow ashamed of being an African, or that you can further your agenda by presenting your opinions as a controversial white person. What do you think?

      Fred - 2012-04-18 05:53

      Another lie from you Patrick

  • Ricky - 2012-04-16 16:15

The blondi was asking for it.Getting his pretty face up close enough to the solgiers is just stupid. No comparison to what arab security forces would have done. There (arab nations) you just disapear.

  • Jerzy - 2012-04-16 16:35

Delusional pseudo victim of what, wrong said fred? Your denial of apartheid practised by SA whites and sanctioned by the church will NEVER alter the fact that the indigenous people of this land suffered a great injustice at the hands of "Christians whites". A victim of apartheid I certainly was, just like my Palestinians brethren, and just like us they will continue to fight the apartheid state until they change their wicked ways or get the hell out. God bless Palestine!

      Tommy - 2012-04-16 16:42

In other words, your hatred for Christian whites (don't know why race and religion had to be brought into this) is the source of your sympathy for Palestinians. Simple YES or NO will do? Ironic your pictures says my friend is enslaved by your own emotions.

      Fred - 2012-04-16 17:13

Poor Jerzy, poor poor jerzy. Let's compete to see who's been victimized more. All SA "Whites" and all SA churches? And "Christian Whites". In your simple world yes. In the more complex real world no. You're a racist and a bigot Jerzy, and through this you're actually enabling the suffering of the Palestinians, not helping them. This is the tragic irony of your pseudo victimhood.

      Mark - 2012-04-16 17:43

Jerzy. You are absolutely right about Afrikaner Nationalists and their NG Dominies. The tone of your comment, though, seems to indicate that you are disappointed the Boere were wise enough to negotiate a war that could not be won by military means by a small minority who maintained power by discrimination and other oppressive means. Looks like a big chip on your shoulder to me.

  • Jerzy - 2012-04-16 16:40

I find it rather strange that apartheid apologist fred always comments on the absence of pro Palestinian posters on other issues, especially Middle eastern or Arab related. You will never find freddie posting on any other topic other that defending apartheid israel. He lives in SA where MY government is 100% committed to the Palestinian cause, yet he never comments on any local issue. I think its high time you packed your bags and join the chosen ones. I hear it's lovely over there.

      Fred - 2012-04-16 17:15

Lots of faulty assumptions here Jerzy. Pseudo-victimhood does this. Best to drop it and see the truer world out there. You'd be amazed.

      Fred - 2012-04-16 18:06

I have responded many times to him

  • Boaz - 2012-04-16 17:06

No wonder they had their cameras ready! They were looking to create an incident. Blocking a highway is illegal, even if you are a self righteous useful idiot without visible means of financial support. anyways, the action appears to have stopped the confrontation, with the protestors backing off. Patience and restraint snapped for a moment. We've all had moments of zero tolerance for games & nonsense when the situation gets heavy. The activists went looking for confrontation and drama, and they got served a taste. Could have been infinitely worse.

  • Larry - 2012-04-16 20:48

Now that I have seen this, that boy just got a little smack. It is quite obvious that these protesters were challenging authority with the intention of creating an incident. If these cycling protesters were trying to access a military exclusion zone, and were being told to stop by police or military personel, then they should not even attempt to argue or discuss the issue. If it had happened in any other country they would have been arrested or even shot. Gaza, Syria, Saudi Arabia, Iran, comes to mind. Soldiers, especially Israeli soldiers, are not trained to be gentle. just a little klap. Pfft.

      Larry - 2012-04-17 18:47

Well now Lesego, even a little smack on the lips is an act of violence. I did not imply otherwise. News just in, a school full of girls in Afganistan, 150 of them, were poisoned from their drinking water at school by Islamic extremists who think that the education of a girl-child is sinful and should be punished by death. This is beyond violence, it is mindless lunacy of the highest order. Nice friends you have Lesego. Friend request me. C'mon, come clean. Dont be scared, just you and me.

      Larry - 2012-04-17 20:10

You see, your name suits you, Lesego. Getting used to it? So you should be since it is the name given to you by your parents. Whose mess was it when Afganistan was at war with Russia? These backward countries have the morality of bitch eating its own young at birth. But you would rather spew your vomit at progressive leading free societies. Says a lot about you and your kind. Lesego.

  • bluzulu - 2012-04-17 20:48

    Ridiculous Savages,

      Fred - 2012-04-18 15:19

Yeah right. Having a death-wish and blowing up hundreds of thousands of civilians using car bombs and suicide attacks is enlightened. Talk about being delusional.
