Israeli gunfire kills man near Gaza border

2012-11-23 13:01

Gaza - Israeli gunfire across the Gaza border killed one Palestinian on Friday and wounded several others, medics said, two days after a ceasefire between the territory's Islamist rulers Hamas and Israel took hold.

A Hamas spokesperson accused Israel of violating the Egyptian-mediated truce and said the group would complain to Cairo. An Israeli military spokesperson said the army was checking reports of the incident.

Medics said Anwar Qdeih, aged 23, was hit in the head by Israeli gunfire after he approached the security fence that runs along the Gaza frontier - an area that Israel has long declared a no-go zone for Gazans.

A relative of the dead man, who was at the scene, said Qdeih had been trying to place a Hamas flag on the fence. He added that an Israeli soldier had fired into the air three times before Qdeih was hit in the head by a bullet.

Hamas spokesperson Sami Abu Zuhri said: "We will contact the Egyptian mediator to discuss the incident."

Wednesday's ceasefire deal ended eight days of fierce fighting that left 163 Palestinians and six Israelis dead.

According to the terms of the accord, both Israelis and Palestinians agreed to stop their hostilities. However, the brief document left details on access to the tense border zone to be worked out in the days ahead.

Seven other Palestinians have been wounded by Israeli gunfire from the border since the start of the ceasefire, medics said. Six of them were hurt on Friday and one on Thursday, when the Israeli military said 200 Palestinian "rioters" approached the fence.

Israel's army constantly patrols the border area and says its forces have come under increasing attack this year, with militants planting explosive devices and firing an anti-tank missile on at least one occasion.

Getting so sick of these pro Palestinian biased reporting by news agencies!

      john.mcguinness.9465 - 2012-11-23 13:50

Yes it is certainly a tad biased. Sky news waited about ten hours before they acknowleged that rockets had been fired less than 3 hours after the ceasefire.

Ai Cyberfriend. What a gullible person you seams to be. You know that there are apparently people who had conversations with God on tape. Maybe you can hunt them down and provide us with the links. You will defiantly not be a good "Cyberfriend" with all these ill represented theories/showpieces. You know that saying that one can brake one's finger off in one's ass if you want to. If you search more you will find better material to discredit Israel. Try it. ...and this comes from a person that is not blindly supporting any of those two.

@Du Toit you right you just blindly following the one version. What you fail to see is the imbalance in warfare, the unfair advantage and the support for Jesus PBUH(according to christianity's)Killers. They are a murderous nation and hat my cyberfriend is something you dont see.

What part of 'ceasefire' does Israel not understand? But then, a Hamas flag is a very dangerous weapon...

      fred.fraser.12 - 2012-11-24 03:04

Unfortunately the Hamas constitution calls for the destruction of Israel. That is the problem.

  • imtiaz.osman.5 - 2012-11-23 13:45

Israel wanted to test Iron Dome system. That is why they initiated this genocide on the Palestinians with USA applauding the move. When it was a proven failure, they immediately moved for a cease fire so that they can fine tune the Iron Dome system. The Israelis will initiate another war shortly after they tune up the system so that they can test it...

Yes , the palestinians are a jolly cooperative lot.Even let the Israeli fighter pilots use their wives and kids as target practice sitting on their rocket launching pickups. They do help Israel maintain the arguably 2nd most advanced military in the world technologically. Thanks for your brothers continued support in this imtiaz

      Madoqua - 2012-11-23 14:48

AS I understand it the Israeli strikes were against the new long range missiles the Palestinians recently got from Iran. It is strange how the Israeli backers, i.e. the USA, gives them defensive technology such as the Iron Dome, whilst the Iranian government gives Palestinians weapons aimed at large scale indiscriminate destruction.

      tom.carrington.395 - 2012-11-23 14:59

What u said is fascinating the iron dome has proven to be very successful & has intercepted hundreds of missiles besides even if u think it failed, Israel would test it against its own missiles, they don’t need to wait for gazans to shoot some.I wonder where u got all what you said, did u just thumb suck it?

      DuToitCoetzee - 2012-11-23 15:02

Hmmmm!!!! Good point. I presume you can also tell us of the police force that were hiring sharpshooter to test their bullet proof vests while the policemen were wearing them. Ai shame!!!!

      danny.levin.33 - 2012-11-23 16:04

Imtiaz, you are a chop. Israel's offensive was a response after 3 days of incessant stream of rockets from Gaza and after issing several warnings. not to mention that there has been many rockets and mortar bombs fired over the years. Last year the nice people of GAZA deliberately fired an anti-tank rocket into a school bus full of kids.

      larry.lachman.54 - 2012-11-23 20:36

Imtiaz, if you do not understand the meaning of a word, then you should not use it. 'Genocide' is not applicable to the death of a hundred people in war, especially if those dead were engineered by Hamas in order to get beneficial propaganda and condemnation for the other side. After all, they have done this before so they know full well the expected result. if you want to talk of 'genocide' then you must use this when trying to explain the now 40 thousand deaths perpetrated by the Syrian regime against its own citizens.

Two groups of people resented and opposed the creation of an Israeli homeland for the Jewish people after the horrors of World War II, notwithstanding that the amount of land was a tiny, minuscule slither relative to the vast lands of the one group, and Jewish people had inhabited that land for millennia. cameronrh1 - 2012-11-23 14:25

Yes because this Palestinian clearly didnt just come from his own house in the Gaza strip to cause trouble? And become pallywood fodder...

      larry.lachman.54 - 2012-11-23 20:40

But Lesego, explain me one thing. Israel has no interest in invading Gaza and it wants quiet on the south of Israel. Whereas Hamas want to eradicate Israel as they unashamedly claim to be their goal. So who then wants the ceasefire to fail? Obviously Hamas. they are just re-loading. But there will not be a next time after the next time.

Best to turn your attention to the HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS of innocent Muslims who are being killed and maimed by the unelected dictators and Jihadists in your midsts. Can't get more homeless than that. Ya think?

Israel was created in 1948 from 52% of the land formerly occupied by the Jewish and Palestinian people, and Palestine 43%. Most of the Israeli territory was the Negev Desert. Jerusalem fell into neither territory. Palestinians with their unelected, self-serving neighbors declared war on Israel the very next day. In the 1960's they even invaded Israel twice. Full military invasions. The result: Israel survived and pushed them back, gaining territory in the process. This is the origin of what you wrongly call "stealing land". There have been almost daily attacks by Palestinians, incited by their self-serving unelected backers. Palestinians even teach their children at Kindergarten to attack Israel, rather than be peaceful. Children. Kindergarten. From day one, and even today it's wage war on Israel. Israel defends herself. Yes sometimes going too far, which is unacceptable, but self-defense nonetheless. All that needs to happen is for Palestinians to choose peace side by side with Israel. This is more likely going forward now because the unelected dictators are being removed from power by their people, one by one. They will no longer use the Palestinians for their own internal political ploys.

I've really tried to understand the Israelis. I used to work on a farm in Israel. I speak Hebrew. I watch their news. All the time they talk about fear. How they have to run to their bunkers to hide from the rockets. How their children can't sleep because of the sirens. This is not a good way for them to live, said Khoudry, who now scrapes a living growing his own produce. We Palestinians don't talk about fear, we talk about death. Our rockets scare them; their rockets kill us. We have no bomb shelters, we have no sirens, we have nowhere we can take our children and keep them safe. They are scared. We are dying.
