Israeli navy takes control of Gaza boat

2012-10-20 14:12

Jerusalem - Israeli naval vessels thwarted the advance of a pro-Palestinian boat attempting to reach Gaza on Saturday in defiance of Israel's blockade of the territory, the military said.

The ships diverted the Estelle to the nearby port of Ashdod after passengers refused to steer the vessel off its course, the military said in a statement.

The 30 or so passengers on board did not offer resistance.

"A short while ago, Israeli naval soldiers boarded the Estelle en route to the Gaza Strip attempting to break the maritime security blockade," the statement said.

Victoria Strand, a spokesperson for Ship to Gaza in Sweden, which sent the Estelle, told the Associated Press that armed, masked soldiers boarded the boat and cut their communications as they were about 30 nautical miles from Gaza.

She said activists on board told her that some six naval boats surrounded their vessel.

"This is a demonstration of ruthlessness," Strand said.

The Swedish-owned, Finnish-flagged Estelle left Naples, Italy, on 7 October with about 30 people from eight countries, carrying items like cement, basketballs and musical instruments.

They were trying to challenge Israel's blockade, imposed since the militant group Hamas seized the coastal territory in 2007.

The ship was the latest in a series of activist-manned boats challenging Israel's blockade on Gaza. Activists have sent a series of blockade-defying vessels to Gaza, most of which have been similarly diverted to Ashdod.

In 2010, an Israeli naval raid on a Gaza-bound flotilla killed nine Turkish activists on board, sparking international condemnation that forced Israel to ease much of its blockade, although it maintains restrictions on key exports and imports of raw materials.

  • duncan.gill1 - 2012-10-20 14:59

Seems mission complete, keep up the good work to draw international attention to this illegal blockade of a sovereign territory! The people on board were definitely not activists or terrorists but law makers from several European countries.Perhaps now the fight to lift this inhuman blockade will get serious attention!

      cameronrh1 - 2012-10-20 16:06

Yes the day this "sovereign territory" stops firing rockets into Israel, and importing weapons to do so is the day Israel will allow imports to flow freely into Gazas port. But right now Hamas is hellbent on the destruction of Israel and the death of Jews.(As stated in their charter) Israel does allow all forms of aid to reach Gaza through its border crossing. All they have to do is dock at Ashod Port and the aid will go to Gaza (to be seized by Hamas and not reach the people who need it). If they were truly humanitarians they would be heading to Syria and the refugee camps there with their much needed medical aid... But you know what the difference is there? They arent calling for the destruction of Israel and death of jews so it would not be beneficial for them. And they would more than likely be shot in Syria too, as opposed to being humanely treated in Israel.

      cameronrh1 - 2012-10-20 17:20

@Ziyaad how you can condone the firing of missiles at a civilian population is mind blowing... You and i both know they are not preventing any aid from reach Gaza, any aid they wanna send through to Gaza can go through the border crossing, just ask the over 1500 weekly trucks which travel through the crossing.

      moses.mabhida.52 - 2012-10-20 20:34

The system of apartheid is work well for Hamas, there are no Jews In Gaza... Soon there will be no Christians either the way things are going... Ziyaad I'm not sure what settlers you talking about... The only problem is Hamas... Not Israel. There are no settlers in Gaza...

      David - 2012-10-20 21:36

Dunkie 56. Why is it that Muslims from Somalia and Sudan want to go take refuge in the Jewish state? You know why - because they know they will be treated better by those damn Jews than by their Bashar like brothers. Go do your research. See how many of them have been shot dead by the Muslim Egyptians while trying to cross into Israel. Take your head out if your backside.

      David - 2012-10-20 21:38

Patrick you are nothing more than a pathetic, bitter, jealous anti Semite. Your immature point about Colorado shows what a cretin you are

      David - 2012-10-21 11:52

Well then if you not an anti Semite (which I still suspect you are) it highlights even more what an idiot you are. Your points you raise are so immature. Have you got a nursery school education?

      tom.guy.37669528 - 2012-10-21 21:19

Known as the Goldstone Report, it criticized Israel for a number of transgressions of international law – including the blockade of Gaza, intentional targeting of civilians, the use of human shields, and the use of white phosphorous in urban areas.[8] White phosphorous, which causes deadly burns[9], was even used on the UN Relief and Works Agency compound in Gaza City.[8] While the UN Human Rights Council passed a resolution endorsing the Goldstone Report[10] and Amnesty International characterized the conflict as “22 days of death and destruction,”[11] the United States Congress passed a resolution which condemned the report by a vote of 344-36[12].

It most definitely a religious issue from the Islamic standpoint. islam exists on the principal of expansionism, and jewish Israel is planted firmly in its path.

All those terrorist released for one soldier, this country and their people are loving, kind and definitely a democracy, as all their citizens have equal right. Study true history and don't blind yourself with biased opinion. I have my opinion because I have been there. Best you revisit yours.

      larry.lachman.54 - 2012-10-20 22:26

They are scum terrorists bent on killing others not of their faith, as an expression of holy worship, and they will never win. Ever.

  • David - 2012-10-20 18:35

Ziyaad, the French, Americans, NATO etc aren't my brothers. Israel never asked them to go into Iraq, Afghanistan etc. The Muslims are my brothers. Ishmael and Isaac. It's time for peace. Let the Jews have their tiny homeland that is smaller than the Kruger national park. We want peace. You guys will have to compromise.

      larry.lachman.54 - 2012-10-20 22:27

Grow up patrick /Lesego. You are on an adult forum here.

  • David - 2012-10-20 18:48

  • ally.adonis - 2012-10-20 18:58

Maybe its best I I simplify fact for you, it amazes me how people view Israel and what baffles me more is the fact that unfortunately you were not awarded the opportunity to view the status and the people of this State soley on you own. It is unfortunate that like you, I too was taught a biased opinion about this State without analysing the facts, and history of this soul on my own. Have you met the Jew or Arab who are citizens of Israel? No, because you have no idea the richness that they posses= Freedom! I made it my mission to "spot an Arab in Israel" and believe me I could not stop snapping at the many images that were not very hard to find. Down every street, on every corner a Jew and Arab were living along side each other happy and free. This was not the expected picture that biasedly was portrayed to me. I met a former Miss Israel and believe it or not she was Arab! During my last few weeks I experienced a feeling of fear when we were told to collect our masks at the Mall, this was because Hamas the terrorist that speak on behalf of Palestine further threatens the safety of the state after already firing 1000+ rockets in one week. I then visited Jerusalem, a place of heritage for most religions. I grew up catholic so I was intrigued to go visit sites that were taught to least did I know that I would be limited to seeing a part of it. Walking through the plaza after visiting the western wall, I wanted to see the golden dome but was denied access because this was Arab territory and this was apparently for my own safety. Yet Arabs were allowed in "Jewish" quarters at no threat at all. I then saw a picture just outside the entrance of the golden dome, we're access was denied; this picture portrayed the image of what one sees at Mecca . My only problem with this image was there was

  • David - 2012-10-20 19:17

Ziyaad it is relevant me bringing up Syria. Why are activists on about Israel all the time. Just like Alli says. The media focus disproportionately on Israel. And lie. Maybe good people should sail to Syria because 30 000 Muslims have been butchered there in the last year alone. Why is it ok for Muslims to butcher Muslims, but not ok for Jews to protect themselves from people hell bent on their annihilation? Ziyaad you don't want peace. I do. I can compromise and share. You can't.

      larry.lachman.54 - 2012-10-20 22:58

Ziyaad, there are many media representatives in Gaza, some with permanent offices. They are there with the permission of Hamas who rule the territory. Israel does not have any say on this issue. Has nobody told you that gaza is now an independent territory, and that Israel no longer occupies any part of it? Seriously, have you been in a coma, or something. If you are going to state LIES, at least have some general knowledge on the issues at hand, so that you do not come across as a complete idiot all the time.

  • David - 2012-10-20 19:24

I'll explain it to you Ziyaad. Try open your heart and be objective and understand. Israel does deliver the aid that these activists bring in. But they can't just accept goods going in without being checked because imagine if Hamas got weapons that they desire. Just like the previous poster mentioned earlier, there are hundreds of deliveries of aid made through the Erez crossing in to Gaza from Israel on s daily basis. Besides aid (and arms) can also come in from Egypt. What is wrong with Israel trying to protect itself. Why don't you sleep with all your doors open from now on Ziyaad.

      David - 2012-10-20 21:54

Ziyaad you haven't mentioned the West Bank once. You are a misguided anti peacenik.

      fort.horseman.7 - 2012-10-20 21:58

@David.I personally appreciate your gesture of brotherhood. It is unfortunate that our religions have been degraded under the banner of politiics. But i must say that the abuse of palestinian children is concerning, and we cant deny the reality of the undermining of Palestinians human rights.God says 'I Will not change the condition of a nation until they change the condition of themselves'.

      David - 2012-10-20 22:10

Not at all Ziyaad. My grandparents were born in Turkey. I am Sephardic and will always be appreciative to the Muslims who were good to the Jews after the Spanish Inquisition. Read up about the Golden Age of Spain etc. I am just stating what I believe. I'd much prefer peace but we will know that if Israel put down their weapons there would be bloodshed but if the Arabs put down their weapons there would be peace. You can't bring yourself to admit that you will not tolerate a Jewish presence in the Middle East.

  • David - 2012-10-20 19:57

Ziyaad what facts? You expect me to read all that crap? I wouldn't bother going to Gaza because Jews aren't welcome there.

      duncan.gill1 - 2012-10-20 21:20

David the big problem is as we had to share our country with others so the it strikes me that this is what Israel has to do..I mean come on where does the future lead right now in 10 years time in 20 years time in a 100 years time..Israeli's have to realize they will never maintain what they now only Jewish run state, this is obviously what drives their frantic militant efforts to keep things the way they are!But I am afraid this path now will only lead to their own destruction!

      jeremy.bard.31 - 2012-10-21 00:50

I have to agree with you Fidel. Quite a yawn reading comments from such ignorant fools. Take a look at this one: "I wouldn't bother going to Gaza because Jews aren't welcome there." ... and as we speak (or sleep), Prof Noam Chomsky, a Jew,is visiting the enclave ... (as have many other Jews in the past). This one really made me chuckle: "Netanyahu is a world statesman" ... this cartoon wielding character looked nothing like statesman at the UNGA recently. In fact he did his nemesis, Ahmadinijad, a favour by making him look more like a statesman. Ho hum ....

  • David - 2012-10-21 05:12

Jeremy Bard Noam Chomsky is a self hater.

      fidel.mgoqi - 2012-10-21 06:56

Norman Finkelstein, Noam Chomsky, Sdlomo Sands, now those are progressive people first, who happen to belong to the Jewish faith!

      larry.lachman.54 - 2012-10-21 07:48

There will always be those on the loony left and those on the loony right in any community. Fidel, you fit into this perfectly as well.

      fidel.mgoqi - 2012-10-21 08:38

And where do you fit Larry? These labels, "left" and "right" seem rather worn out to me. Can't one be both left and right at the same time, depending on the issue? Are we really bound inside an ideological straight-jacket that stops us from thinking? As Scott Fitzgerald said, "The test of a first-rate mind is the ability to hold two opposing ideas in mind at the same time and still retain the ability to function."

      David - 2012-10-21 10:10

Morning Fidel. That is the difference between us brothers. We abhor death and you glorify it, what with stoning a, beheadings, glorifying terrorism etc. it is ironic, you guys never condemned suicide bombings at the height of the intifada, which her truthfully aimed at innocent civilians, and now it is mainly Muslims who suffer this fate in Iraq, Afghanistan etc.

      fidel.mgoqi - 2012-10-21 10:44

Good morning to you too David. You are reliant upon a series of assumptions that are common enough, of course, but still pretty much useless. Palestinians wouldn't rely on suicide bombers if they had sophisticated delivery systems, cruise missiles, etc... If someone were stealing my land, I'd resist forcefully, in whatever manner I could, rather than standing outside the thief's office with a placard for the next 60 years.

      larry.lachman.54 - 2012-10-21 10:45

Fidel, in order to counter your rubbish, I have to be very well versed in it. I understand your mentality very well, and if I were to psychoanalyse you, I would put you in the category of having an exceptional upbringing and education, alongside the kids of some wealthy Jewish family who 'adopted' you while your mommy worked as their housekeeper. These situations inevitably come to an end and you now fend for yourself, quite ably I am sure, but you have developed this resentment because you were never really accepted into Jewish life and community, and your benefactors have forgotten about you. You exude bitterness towards Jews in general and Israel is all there is to vent your spleen.

      fidel.mgoqi - 2012-10-21 10:57

Larry, you can psychoanalyse me all you want, someday I'll write my book, even though it would never get past the moderators on this site. If your logic is strong enough to stand on its own right, there should be no need to attack the character of the opponent. To the undecided audience, attacking him personally is likely to grant him the appearance of a victim. -Oberststuhlherr

      fidel.mgoqi - 2012-10-21 11:11

By the way Larry, you couldn't be more off based on your analysis and as such should stick to your daily job(I hope for the sake of your patients that you are not a psychologist).

      David - 2012-10-21 11:45

Sorry Fidel if you can't share the land with us, we will have to defend ourselves from you. Just admit that you cannot accept a Jewish Israel. As this renders Islam a failure.
