Israelis block Palestinian inmate visitors

2011-10-11 13:00

Jerusalem - Israeli activists on Tuesday prevented Palestinians from visiting relatives held in a jail in northern Israel to protest the ongoing captivity of soldier Gilad Shalit, an activist told AFP.

Around 50 supporters of Shalit, who was snatched by Gaza militants in 2006, stopped a bus carrying Palestinians from reaching the Gilboa Prison in the Beit She'an valley, Shalit activist Shimshon Liebman said.

"This time we succeeded; the bus turned back to the West Bank," Liebman said.

In August, a group of activists had tried to prevent Palestinians from visiting imprisoned relatives in southern Israel, but police intervened and allowed the Palestinians to pass.

Tuesday's action was a message both to Hamas, "who should not take the luxurious conditions of Israeli prisons for granted," and to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, "who should act to create a balance between the conditions of Hamas prisoners and Shalit, whose place of imprisonment is not even known to us," Liebman said.

Shalit was 19 when he was captured on June 25 2006 by three armed groups, including the Islamist movement Hamas, and he has been held ever since at a secret location in the Gaza Strip.

He has not been permitted visits by the Red Cross, and the last sign of life dates back two years to October 2009 when Hamas released a video of him calling on Netanyahu to do everything to free him.

Mediated talks between Israel and Hamas on a prisoner release that would see hundreds of Palestinians freed in return for Shalit, have so far yielded no results.

beautiful people palestinians are. really a nation we should look to recognise and let others learn from..... vomit

      ¦? - 2011-10-11 16:32

What a real palestinian hating statement that is from you Adam.

      Fragile - 2011-10-11 16:55

Have to agree with Adam. The Palestinians refuse peace. They voted for war (Hamas)... and now they complaining... pathetic. When the Palestinians recognise Israel & choose peace I will start supporting their cause... until such a time though - I will support Israeli self defence as I support all western interests first.

      ¦? - 2011-10-11 17:10

@Fragile, Israel and Israeli culture are not western!!! LMFAO@ you Cmon man, signing out of your user name "Adam" and signing in into other names and giving yourself 15 "thumbs up" out of nowhere in the space of 3 minutes is really suspicious and rather obvious. You sure dislike good debate, based on facts dont you?

      1) Israel is a western country... a western culture surrounded by a Radical Muslim minority powerful enough to ensure peace never takes root 2) Im not Adam - just happen to agree with him 3) What is really suspicious is your name u as$

Israelis are experts in practising collective punisment

      King Solomon - 2011-10-11 13:36

And firing rockets indicriminately at towns and farms is selective? Don't be so bloody one-eyed.

      mecan - 2011-10-11 17:46

How short people's memories are... Whenever people talk about the Israeli question, it inevitably ends in a chicken and egg style argument about who occupied where illegally first. The bottom line is, if Hamas and the other political groups in the disputed regions began acting more like civilised political parties rather than terrorists with the sole aim of killing Israeli civilians (remember, if Israel had the same aim this whole issue wold have been put to bed years ago due to their military might) then Israel would not have a leg to stand on and the US and the west would have no choice but to put pressure to bear on Israel to make concessions to the now truly peaceful and democratic Palestinians. I have never and can never support any terrorist organisation who supports the killing of innocent civilians (without having a military target in sight) no matter how just they believe their cause.

  • King Solomon - 2011-10-11 13:37

About time they did this to the inhuman hostage takers.

      Abdud-Dayaan Keown - 2011-10-11 15:46

Yes the Israelis are inhuman “Since the beginning of the Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories in 1967, over 650,000 Palestinians have been detained by Israel. This forms approximately 20% of the total Palestinian population in the Occupied Palestinian Territories (OPT). The Palestinians have only ONE prisoner.” The latest breakdown from Israeli government excluding army shows how inhuman the Israelis are Administrative Detainees 229 Female Prisoners 37 Child Detainees 211 including 39 under 16yrs Palestinian Legislative Council Members 15 East Jerusalem Prisoners 188 Gaza Prisoners 647 and guess what 1948 Territories Prisoners held without trial since then 178. These are official Israeli government figures excluding those that are held by the army and Shin Bet incommunicado. So who are inhuman definitively the Israelis

      pop101 - 2011-10-11 15:55

Tell me Abdud, is the one Israeli prisoner since 1967 also an official Israeli government figure. Your propaganda writing is brilliant - but unfortunately not clever enough.

      Abdud-Dayaan Keown - 2011-10-11 16:03

@pop101 The one prisoner Shalit was not captured in 1967 and this is not propoganda Israeli government releases these figures annually. They themselves admit that they are holding thousands of prisoners without trial reminds you a lot about apartheid South Africa.

      pop101 - 2011-10-11 16:05

Well, then you are not comparing apples with apples, hence making your argument fubar.

      Abdud-Dayaan Keown - 2011-10-11 16:15

@pop101 So enlighten us how many Israelis are being held prisoner by the Palestinians since the Israeli government only acknowledge Shalit as being held prisoner.

      pop101 - 2011-10-11 16:17

Probably not many, as they are killed or be-headed after capture.

      Abdud-Dayaan Keown - 2011-10-11 16:32

@pop101 and how many has been killed since 2009. By the Israelis 6430 Palestinians killed and 1084 Israelis killed by Palestinians

      pop101 - 2011-10-11 16:44

Well, if I know I will get killed at a 6:1 rate against any opposition army, then I would stop firing rockets at them and try and make peace.

      Abdud-Dayaan Keown - 2011-10-11 16:58

@pop101 The Israelis do not want peace since peace will mean the end of billions of US Dollars flowing into there country and it will ultimately lead to them being assimilated with the Palestinians

      Adam - 2011-10-11 16:59

abdud, it so clear from your argument that you are of the typical pro palestinian opinion that life is meaningless - saying that 1 israeli life does not matter as more palestinians are held captive. really i am not suprised. all you people believe in is power and retaliation, instead of compromise or peace - well done proving my point. a major difference between the captive palestinians and gilad shalit is that the palestinian prisoners are prisoners for a reason, israel has no reason to waste tax payers money on innocent good people who will not harm israelis if living in public. these are cold blooded killers who deserve to be in jail for life, otherwise be excecuted for their roles in the killings of innocent israelis. another difference is that these killers are treated as humans, with access to medical care, family visits, and any religios rights they wish. gilad shalit is not allowed access to anything or any one. and you smile knowing this. arabs are proud of this, or else there would some condemnation of his situation some where in the arab world... i have yet to hear any. if you are sick of seeing palestinians dieing, you should probably tell them to stop waging war on israel. israel is yet to kill a palestinian that isnt a retaliation attack. statistics are not any where near the same on the palestinian side. infact hamas applauds the deaths of israeli civilians, weather grown men or baby girls. start to see the light, or admit you're a a terrorist

      Abdud-Dayaan Keown - 2011-10-11 17:10

@Adam What is the definition of a terrorist. Using US or Israeli meaning then they themselves are the terrorists. Secondly all life is sacred. Thirdly Israel has been condemned by International law and UN security council resolutions for using disproportionate attacks on Palestinians. Collective punishment is against Geneva Convention - Palestinians are not guilty of this but the Israelis are. Israel is not wasting their tax payers money but US tax payers money which average 8.2million dollars of US money per day to Israeli military. The source for US military aid to Israel during Fiscal Year 2011 is the Congressional Research Service’s “U.S. Foreign Aid to Israel,” written by Jeremy M. Sharp, Specialist in Middle Eastern Affairs, updated September 16, 2010. According to this report, the Obama Administration requested $3 billion in Foreign Military Financing (FMF) for Israel for the fiscal year 2011. So who are terrorists and who are the supporters of terrorist - Israel and USA and Adam

      Adam - 2011-10-11 17:17

abdud - according to your retarded logic, the israelis do not want peace because they will lose american aid if peace comes? that raises the following questions.... 1) does that mean the palestinians suicide bombers and rocket launchers are zionists? 2) surley if america gives israel money, it would continue to give weather the country is in war or not? 3) if israel does not want peace then why did it give away parts to the plo in the name of peace, all of which resulted in more rocket attacks and suicide bombers? 4)why are these men in the article in jail - are these actually palestinians who wanted peace and israel imprisoned them to stop the peace they wished? hopefully these questions clearly indicate how retarded your and all other palestinian supporters points are. on another note, i would like anyone and every one to notice that the jewish claim to the land is that of proof. the palestinian claim to the land is only that of denying the jewish proof, they never have their own proof... wonder why.... also, youll notice palestinian supporters always come up with new dis-proofs to the jewish claims... but the jewish claims always seem to be proved beyond any doubt. so more and more creative (and insane - refer to abdud) claims are invented. just something to notice!!

      MosesMabhida - 2011-10-11 17:24

Peace could have been achieved several times in the last 60 odd years, if it was not ruined by a small number of bad leaders (Arafat) that rode the gravy train while their people suffered on Israel's self defence policy. Today Hamas/ PA are so financially rich that any advances in peace with Israel would mean an end to financial support from Iran / US, EU, World bank; respectively. BTW Abdud, There is no place in the world where racism... is as widespread and institutionalized as in the Arab world; against Jews, women, Christian minorities & Gays.

      Abdud-Dayaan Keown - 2011-10-11 17:26

@Adam You should join the Theater of the Absurd since you definitively are absurd in your reasoning and your logic. Get to know the facts behind Israels occupation read thru the leaked US Diplomatic Cables and see how intransigent the Israelis are and how much the Palestinians have given in to the Israelis. The more the Palestinians compromise the more the Israelis want to the point where US embassy staff is exasperated with Israelis

      Adam - 2011-10-11 17:29

i have 1 log in name. Adam. never been anything different. abdud, you make a good point, i wonder why america gives israel lots of money to defend her self? i think its because 1)israel is a democracy 2)israel does not breed persons who kill them selves trying to kill as many americans/jews/infidels as possible 3)israel dont burn american flags and celebrate when people die. lets look at the aid from another point of view, this aid is quite recent, all of israels early wars till about the 70's were all SELF FINANCED. no american aid. the war of independence was really 7 arab nations against holocaust survivors, and the holocaust survivors managed to win.... amazing how the arabs claim god hates jews... hmmm lets look at the aid the palestinians receive. they recieve at least 200million dollars a year from the united states for arms alone. that is not for food and watever. ARMS TO POLICE THEM SELVES, something they do not do. we can only imagine the amount they receive from iran and other terrorist loving nations. TERRORIST: you can define this word how ever you want, and i will too. but i am quite happy to define terrorists who teach their children it is better to kill then to make peace. people who brain was children to one day kill them selves and take as many people with them as possible. this isnt semantics, this is a genuine battle of good vs evil. you have made it quite clear you position on the situation. thanks.

      Abdud-Dayaan Keown - 2011-10-11 18:01

@Adam you are so misled. "By all accounts the United States has given more money to Israel than to any other country. The Congressional Research Service’s conservative estimate of total cumulative US aid to Israel (not adjusted for inflation) from 1949 through 2010 is $109.001 billion. The paltry 200 mil you are referring to how is it given. "In addition, some funding has occasionally been provided directly to the Fatah-led Palestinian Authority (PA) in an attempt to strengthen it against competing political parties (particularly Hamas) and for use in policing the Palestinian people. Such funds are usually only authorized once Congress has received proof that they will be used for "non-lethal assistance."" No strings attached to US funding of Israel and when Israel indiscriminately destroy Palestinian property then the US gives aid. "The U.S. also provided just over $61.5 million (as of February 13, 2009) in emergency humanitarian aid through USAID, UNRWA, and the International Committee of the Red Cross following Israel's assault on Gaza." Once again US picks up the tab for Israeli aggression

      Adam - 2011-10-11 19:22

your name is abdud. my name is adam. now which one do you really think has been fed lies and propoganda in his mosque. exactly. i am yet to hear of a muslim leader call for peace, the reason is sinmple. no peace is wanted on that side, people are happy to die for a cause wich im not sure, they're even sure is about. catch a wake up. im out out this. peace shalom salaam

      Abdud-Dayaan Keown - 2011-10-11 21:52

Adam i am not fed lies or propaganda in mosque perhaps lies and propaganda is fed you in your shul, people should start realizing that when you expose Israeli atrocities that you are not anti-Semitic, since that is what Zionists and the Israeli Lobby wants the world to believe, and i am not saying that atrocities are not committed by Palestinians. If hardliners such as the extremists that are part of the Israeli cabinet and those hardliners in the illegal settlements are treated in the same way that Hamas are treated by Israel and USA then and then only headway can be made to have peace in the region. Until Israelis start acting against these extremists who are hell bent on war there is not going to be peace. I am not an extremist and i am the first one to condemn an act of atrocity that's committed in the name of Islam since Islam does not teach us these things. Just as the true Judaism does not teach Jews to act the way these extremists are acting. Atrocities on both sides need to be condemned and the Israeli government should stop acting as if they are the victims since they are acting in much the same manner as Hamas.

  • tictoctictoc - 2011-10-11 13:48

Israel will not last beyond 2020. The hundreds of thousands of Israelis with dual US passports will return to the promised land in Orlando, Florida or New Jersey. The rest who are mainly of European descent will integrate with their local Arab cousins and live in harmony under the rightful owners of Palestinian land, namely Palestinian Arabs, with Jerusalem as its capital! This is quite simple. Same like SAfrica, it's just taking a bit longer because the regime in Israel is so intransigent. The Jewish settlers from Europe can stay as long as they respect the local rulers.

      Adam - 2011-10-11 14:19

1)how are arabs the rightful owners when they weren't there first? you do know jews predate any form of islam by literally thousands of years - according to any ones account. including that of muslims. 2)you're obviously under the impression that israelis dont want to live in israel, that they're prepared to pack up and leave, oh how very wrong you are. in fact in every war israel has been involved in, jews around the world have flown in to show their support - the jews are going no where. 3)the other incorrect impression you have is that israel will not stand after 2020 - i wish i knew you so i could bet you and take your money then. your jew hating grandfather was telling people the same thing 50years ago, no one has ever given the tiny israel a fighting chance. and somehow she still stands while her neighbours literally tear them selves apart - and then have the cheek to blame zionists, classic. arabs hold that the land is theirs some how, i dont know how... the oldest land claims are all jewish in the land of israel. The holy book of muslims even claims the jews rightfully own the land. refer to Chapter 5: 20-21 of the holy book. if you do not believe in god then simply see the dates wich jewish presence dates back to the land, and the date which islam brings it presence. and if u dont like the way israel treats the palestinians please look at how arabs have treated palestinians since 1968 as well their own citizens. refer to syrians, libians, yemenites...

      ¦? - 2011-10-11 14:36

@Adam, Most jews alive today are not descendents of Israel, but descendents of converts to Judaism and are therefore not true Israelites, and have no rightful claim to land in Israel

      Adam - 2011-10-11 16:11

@the guy who replied to me. where do u get this jew hating information? the lie are you speaking about happend in turkey along long time ago. it was not a mass conversion it very few people, as far as i know if you follow the time line, those converts and their later generations were all wiped out in one of the many historical purges of the jews. ie: they do not exist today. the jews today are all original descendants of abraham, moses, jacob, and so on... a few years back it was proven(very well proven and documented actually) that all jews carry a certain chromosome that non jews do not carry, showing they all originally come from the same source. Y-chromosomal Aaron - i did not just make that up. judasim is the only religion in the world, to my knowledge, that makes conversion very difficult. conversion takes years and the person is constantly asked by the governing body if they wish to continue regularly. it is not written in the jewish law that people should bcome jewish, quite the opposite. how ever once a person has converted to judasim, they are a 100%, no different to any other jew and in some cases are held in ever higher regard. king davids mother was a convert. king david was very very jewish. so firstly your claim is incorrect, that the jews today are not jews. they are very much the same jews! and secondly - and this is actually completely irrelevant - even if they were converts, it would make no differnce, they would still be 100% jewish

      ¦? - 2011-10-11 16:27

@Adam, So u deny in front of me as well as everyone else that many people converted to judaism, and then further down your pathetic reply, you then state that their have been people who converted to judaism? You are very confused indeed ! Why do u think Jews have so many varied appearances today? Some look black, some look white, some look like coloured people, all indicative of the many people who converted to judaism many centuries ago. Ezra,500 years before Jesus, was only able to gather what was left of FOUR tribes of israel out of the original TWELVE,and in that, the 2nd gathering of israel already took place. Israelite and Jew should not be confused.A Jew can be anyone who follows the Jewish faith, and an israelite can be anyone, even palestinian, yet their land is being stolen.

      Adam - 2011-10-11 16:48

what i replied is very easy to understand if you read it slowly. what you are claiming is a storey, it has no substance to it. its not actually factual. so you are giving me a conspiracy, thats beautiful. please come back to the table when you have something with any substance to put forward. all the best

      ¦? - 2011-10-11 17:05

@Adam, No conspiracy here Sir ! Your reply was very muddled up,contradictory and factually incorrect eg:King David's mother was a non-jew ,when nothing is known about her.Had u said that Ruth, his great grand mother was a non-jew,i would have agreed.

  • JohnWV - 2011-10-11 16:16

If it learned of Corporal Shalit's location, Israel would overwhelm and kill his captors. Knowing this, Palestine cannot allow visitors. Israel's occupation of Palestine is asymmetric and international rules of warfare don't work when opponents are way mismatched.

  • DonQuixote - 2011-10-11 16:33

Hamas needs to order the complete cessation of militant resistance forces whilst Israel orders the complete cessation of border controls and restrictions of imports into Palestine, colony and illegal settlement construction, detaining Palestinians without trial, and a recognition of the Palestinian bid for a Palestinian statehood whilst disassembling their theocratic demands. At the same time, of course.

      mecan - 2011-10-11 17:04

"it's that simple" Palestinians need to show Israel that if a state is created in the West Bank that it won't turn into a Hamas-run Islamic Fanatic Terrorist Training camp committed to the destruction of Israel. It happened when Israel withdrew from Gaza. Why should they trust the PA to not let it happen yet again?

  • Monacoroyals - 2011-10-11 17:06

Im not a Christian, not a Jew.... not a Muslim... I hate people that use religion to persecute others. I see Israel being persecuted basically for not being an Islamic state in the Middle East. I don't like some things the Israeli government does; but seeing what the Arab League has done to the UN to persecute just one country, has made me a supporter. I am glad you 'have' nuclear weapons!

  • BrassCopper - 2011-10-11 17:08

My support for the Palestinians dwindle over the years for I don't believe that Palestinians intends to change anything - they want war - a religious war that will bring no peace just more blood shed. someone needs to teach them that dieing for their religion is not a positive in the cycle that we (West) calls life.

  • JohnWV - 2011-10-11 17:13

Corporal Gilad Shalit was a soldier in uniform, on duty and armed when taken prisoner. Reporting his having been "kidnapped" is typical of Israel's engineered news and its propagation by Jewish biased media. Yes, his detention is tragic, but less so than the detention of each of the children as young as thirteen among Israel's 11,000 Palestinian prisoners. I suspect they mostly just want to see their parents again; if the Israeli Army would only tell their parents where they are.

      MosesMabhida - 2011-10-11 17:35

When the Palestinians choose the path of peace all these “children” will go home JohnWV. You can not try and kill your neighbour without paying some sort of price – and that is Israeli prisons full of violent & religious Palestinians youth. Every human being of sound mind should know this by now. In any event, US and Israel are not the Satan that the Ayatollah of Rock'n rollah declared. With the way the Arabs behave one wonders if perhaps they are the ones who are worthy of that title. On the topic though, I have come to realise that the Israelis are demonised, many many times without justification. Clearly the Arabs have never wanted Israel to exist and have tried many times, unsuccessfully, to drive them into the sea. Now the Israelis are pretty straight forward people. You threaten them, they sort you out. Nothing wrong with defending your state and it citizens. Especially against unsavoury neighbours who persist on threatening and attacking Israel.
