Italian kills 2 Africans in racist attack

2011-12-13 21:23

Florence - An Italian man killed two African street sellers and wounded three others in an apparent racist shooting spree in the heart of Florence on Tuesday before committing suicide, police said.

Gianluca Casseri, 50, who Italian officials said was a right-wing extremist, parked his car in the northern Dalmazia square at lunchtime, got out and started shooting with a pistol, witnesses said.

Two Senegalese men were killed and one seriously injured.

After the shooting, he got back in his car and drove away before opening fire again about two hours later in the central San Lorenzo market, wounding two more African street sellers.

The market is one of the Renaissance city's most famous, and is usually packed with tourists because of its location halfway between the magnificent domed Cathedral and the train station.

Afterward, Casseri fled to a parking garage, got in his car and shot himself in the throat, police said.

Casseri was an author and publisher of a magazine dedicated to fans of JRR Tolkien, who wrote the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

This racist cancer must be eradicated.

      Marc - 2011-12-14 09:48

@sharon and steve - please get the F$%^ out of south africa.NOW, before you and your kind ruin this country permanently. stop blaming black people for everything and take responsibility. you are disgusting racists not voetsak!

      Sharmay - 2011-12-14 11:19

Racism is a global sickness. I wish people could learn to just respect each other. Culture and colour differences should make anyone less human than anyone else. People are too quick to stereotype.

      ludlowdj - 2011-12-14 12:01

Neither you nor the writer of the article have provided any proof that the attack was racist, you of course are one of those people who say its racist if its white against black, but just crime if its black on white hey!?

  • johnmartinbradley - 2011-12-13 21:55

So it is a racist attack when a white man kills a black man, but the thousands of white and Indian farmers killed in South Africa since 1994 does not count as racist murder?

      Juann Strauss - 2011-12-13 22:04

The available evidence would seem to support your theory.

      Bob - 2011-12-13 22:08

      Well said!

      Fidel - 2011-12-14 08:11

37 recommends? Without even actually formulating any kind of rational, thoughtful contribution, and out come the rest of your kind... crawling out from behind the fridge like cockroaches. By the way Italians are not white (caucasian).

      Garth - 2011-12-14 10:24

Fidel, do you mean that they are Caucasian or that they are not? If you mean that they are Caucasian, but not white, then you are correct. I mean, what is white anyway: a colour that reflects all other colours. Italians, for the main part, have that gorgeous skin colour known as Mediterranean olive. I am not white, but I am still Caucasian, even though I am still an African, by virtue of my birthplace. Probably best described as pale fawn, if you like.

What has this incident in Italy got to do with farm murders?

  • Jerzy - 2011-12-13 22:16

Why does this racist incident have to be compared to farm murders in SA? Just admit it that whites are racist too. Why is this so difficult to accept.

      Marc - 2011-12-14 09:45

thank you jerzy for actually speaking the truth

  • Fidel - 2011-12-14 07:06

Unfortunately, white colonialist attitudes to black people are similar to those of psychopaths: Psychopaths lack a sense of guilt or remorse for any harm they may have caused others, instead rationalizing the behavior, blaming someone else, or denying it outright.[19] Psychopaths also lack empathy towards others in general, resulting in tactlessness, insensitivity, and contemptuousness. All of this belies their tendency to make a good, likable first impression. Psychopaths have a superficial charm about them, enabled by a willingness to say anything without concern for accuracy or truth. This behaviour is clearly depicted by the above posts.

      Marc - 2011-12-14 09:45

      thank you fidel!

      Sharmay - 2011-12-14 11:21

      You two suck. Closet racists.

  • Fidel - 2011-12-14 08:10

Why do people think discussions about racism always require a commitment to parity, like some absurd version of political debates on TV? No-one is saying only whites are racist. Everyone acknowledges it can work the other way. But that doesn't mean that there can't be any discussion of white on black racism without some absurd box-ticking disclaimer "yes, blacks do it too..." This is just a mealy-mouthed, get out of jail card for people who are made uncomfortable by discussion about racism. Grow up.

  • Rob - 2011-12-14 08:20

Let's open this one and see what is inside. Simple question. How do YOU define racism?

      chris.faurie - 2011-12-14 10:05

The term racism originates from America; it is the racial prejudice by a majority race to a minority race. This means there was no racism in SA, as caucasians are the minority.

      John - 2011-12-14 17:01

Umm no....racism is racism whether it's towards a minority or a majority

  • Rob - 2011-12-14 09:28

Here we go...on the basis of the contents of this report it is obvious that anything that involves two or more individuals and where there is a percieved difference in value systems qualifies to be described as RACIST. Get out of here...surely everyone makes choices about how the want to live and with whom they are prepared to share their external or internal space. In a sense that does make everyone a racist, but is it really evil? Surely not, or are we all fundamentally evil. As a small, specific example I do not want to share my space with the black man who urinated against my wall in full view on a main street. I told him something to that effect, his response was that it was his house now. That makes neither of us racists, but it does make me angry.

  • Warwick - 2011-12-14 10:21

Why is this racist and not criminal. When blacks attack whites it is called criminal and not racist. Why?

  • Sharmay - 2011-12-14 11:36

The guy was a known right winger so a racist motive is obvious but before all the black guys jump to attention with this and scream racism and attack the white folk here for saying anything, let me remind you about the foreign individuals killed with the xenophobia in the last 2 years. How is beating a Zimbabwean man to death with a rock (with a crowd cheering them on I might add) any different to what this guy did? How would Fidel and Marc explain that? Or is it only "white colonialist attitudes to black people" eh Fidel?

      Fidel - 2011-12-14 13:34

Apples and oranges, and this is what I posted above: Why do people think discussions about racism always require a commitment to parity, like some absurd version of political debates on TV? No-one is saying only whites are racist. Everyone acknowledges it can work the other way. How did a racist incident that took place in Italy ( could have been anywhere for that matter) degenerate into a discussion about racist blacks South Africans. I'll tell you why, because in your sick minds, Africans deserve to suffer and their abuse and suffering can easily be explained away by rationilising it or excusing it, I mean you have been practising this in this country for over 400 years, and this has become part of your character.

  • ludlowdj - 2011-12-14 12:21

HENNO maybe you should open your eyes and start to realize that internationally the trend has been to allow non white immigrants into almost every country in the world, not to enrich their lives or give them a shot at a better life, but to provide cheap labour to increase the direct profits of the upper class. This has resulted in their (non white) alienation in every country they have settled and the current ongoing "hate" campaign against them. Being actively involved in the international community I am privy to a lot of information which would never be allowed in printed media. I am therefor in a fairly good position to share the feelings and attitudes of the indigenous peoples of the countries affected by this. I am most definitely not in favour of what happened in this instance or the need of violence between racial groups, as I am acutely aware that the upper class of so called 1%ers and the government of the world are 100%ly responsible and accountable. My fight is for the return to the Democracy that was originally envisaged and for the stopping of governments by any means necessary in their pursuits of the bastardized current form of pseudo democracy that is currently being practiced internationally.

  • John - 2011-12-14 17:05

I'm just amazed that an article about a racist attack in Italy suddenly has comments regarding white farm some people use any opportunity to mention what they believe is a white massacre on News24? And I am in no way belittling the disgusting number of farm murders in our country.
