Warsaw - Polish authorities say the head of Rome's Jewish community and four others have been questioned by police after triggering an alarm at the visitor's centre at the Auschwitz-Birkenau state museum.

They were released after questioning.

Museum spokesperson Pawel Sawicki said the group had permission to film at the former Nazi German death camp on Tuesday, the 70th anniversary of its liberation.

The museum had closed but the group had an appointment to be let out by guards at 23:30. However, they finished early and guards had not yet arrived at the main gate. The group then pushed open a window to the visitor's centre, activating an alarm.

Police spokesperson Mariusz Sokolowski said on Thursday that the five included the head of Rome's Jewish community, Riccardo Pacifici and a television crew.
