Washington - Secretary of State John Kerry says the US knows, based on intelligence, that the Syrian regime carefully prepared for days to launch a chemical weapons attack.

A US chemical weapons assessment says 1 429 people have been killed in the attack, including at least 426 children.

Kerry said Syrian regime personnel had been at the site of the attack for three days beforehand, making preparations.

He said regime elements were told to prepare by putting on gas masks.

Kerry said the US also knew from where the rockets had been launched, which were regime-controlled areas.

The US is releasing a public report on intelligence gathered about last week's deadly attack.

President Barack Obama is preparing for a possible military strike in response.

>>  Meanwhile AFP reports that experts have finished their work in Syria and will "expedite" a report on whether chemical weapons have been used in the country's conflict, says UN spokesperson Martin Nesirky.

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon is ready to brief the UN Security Council on the investigation.
