Moscow - Russia said on Thursday that North Korean leader Kim Jong Un will not attend the Victory Day parade in Moscow on May 9.

"He decided to stay in Pyongyang," Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said, referring to the North Korean capital.

Peskov added that Pyongyang had informed Moscow of Kim's decision, which he said was linked to "internal Korean affairs", Russian news agencies reported.

Russia would have been the secretive North Korean ruler's first foreign visit since he took office in 2011. Peskov has previously said that Kim accepted an invitation to attend the Victory Day celebrations.

However, North Korea never officially confirmed this.

Most Western leaders are skipping the parade, which this year marks the 70th anniversary of World War II, because of the row with Russia over Ukraine. The planned trip by the head of what is widely regarded as a pariah state had been criticised both inside and outside of Russia as a sign of Moscow's increasing international isolation.

Peskov denied speculation that outside pressure prompted Moscow to cancel its invitation for Kim. "Of course not," he replied to a question if any foreign leaders had told Russia that Kim's presence was undesirable.
