Seoul (dpa) - A man who attacked the US envoy to South Korea with a knife in March was sentenced to 12 years in jail for attempted murder on Friday, a news report said.

Kim Ki Jong, 55, was also convicted of violence against a foreign envoy and business obstruction, but acquitted of violating the National Security Law, Yonhap News Agency reported.

The US ambassador to South Korea, Mark Lippert, received cuts to his face and arm during the March 5 attack, which left him needing more than 80 stitches.

Kim said he had no intention to kill the 42-year-old envoy, but the judge said he had deliberately slashed as "the parts of the body that had a direct connection with life," Yonhap reported.

But the court ruled that Kim was not guilty of supporting North Korea's aim of assimilating the South. Prosecutors made the accusation after Kim voiced his opposition to joint military exercises between the United States and South Korea.

The pro-North Korea material found at his home were consistent with Kim's studies of Korean politics and history, and only part of the "huge amount of materials on the two countries' traditional cultures found at his place," the judge said.

Prosecutors said they would appeal the partial acquittal, the report said.
