Stephenville - For those who served with Eddie Ray Routh in the Iraqi desert, the man on trial for gunning down the famed American Sniper author Chris Kyle and a friend is not the Marine they had come to know.

Former Corporal Ryker Pawloski says the man he knew looked up to people who did the kind of job Kyle did.

Routh is charged in the 2013 deaths of Kyle and Kyle's friend at a gun range. Routh's attorneys say he was in a psychotic state.

The trial has drawn intense interest, partly because of the Oscar-nominated film based on Kyle's memoir.

Family members say Routh, who was also deployed to Haiti, came back from his military service a changed man and was hospitalised multiple times for mental health issues.
