Largest US-Israel military drill under way

2012-10-24 23:14

Tel Aviv - The US and Israel simulated rocket attacks during their largest-ever joint military drill on Wednesday, just as as real ones fired from Gaza exploded in southern Israel.

US military officials insisted the joint exercise, called Austere Challenge 2012, was planned long before the latest flare-up between Israel and Hamas-ruled Gaza and a long-running debate over how to deal with Iran, unrelated to specific threats facing Israel.

It comes at a time when Israel and the US have openly debated the merits of a strike on Iran's nuclear facilities, and as US support for Israel has emerged as a central issue in the upcoming American presidential elections.

In this week's presidential debate, President Barack Obama cited the joint drill, calling it testament to the strong military co-operation between the two countries. Presidential contender Mitt Romney has claimed that the Obama administration has undermined Israel as it faces threats from Iran and Arab countries.

About 1 000 troops brought in from the US are in Israel alongside a similar number of Israeli troops. An additional 2 500 US troops based in Europe and the Mediterranean are participating in the drill. The armies say they are practising their ability to work together to thwart a variety of threats that face Israel. The exercise will continue for about three weeks.

"Make no mistake. The US is 100% committed to the security of Israel. That commitment drives this exercise," said US Air Force Lt Gen Craig Franklin in a news conference at a training site near a beach in the Tel Aviv area.

Reporters were invited to view a large parking lot near the beach where large camouflage-coloured trucks and a Patriot air defence battery launcher were deployed for Wednesday's exercise simulating incoming rockets. In that simulation, Israeli commanders and their American counterparts identified an incoming rocket or enemy aircraft, then American troops pushed the button to activate the anti-missile launcher.

Not far away, Israeli soldiers were operating similar batteries for real, as Gaza militants fired dozens of rockets at southern Israel. The locally made "Iron Dome" system knocked down eight rockets from Gaza, Israeli officials said on Wednesday.

Also this week, US soldiers said they practiced a response to a chemical and biological attack on a joint Israeli-American military convoy. In that exercise, soldiers rubbed a charcoal-like substance to decontaminate the imagined chemical and biological by-products from army vehicles and personnel.

Sgt Gary Sabby, 26, from St Paul, Minnesota, said he played a 47-year-old male suffering a seizure from the attack. He rolled up the sleeve of his camouflaged military fatigues to reveal the pinprick - above a large tattoo of a bear - where soldiers stuck him with an IV needle.

"If something ever did happen, we could come together," said Specialist Brandon Maroney, 23, from Dallas, Texas. "This joint exercise validated that we can work together."

The US axis needs war like a junkie needs a fix, you don't spend $1 trillion a year on "defense" without manufacturing conflicts through which you steal others' mineral resources. The prize is the Caspian Sea oil and gas reserves, but Russia and China aren't going to just let the Robber Barons walk in and take it. The ultimate goal is to isolate Iran with the intent of undermining and overthrowing its government.

Bunch of kahookas you are...You need a marine to come and give you lesson. What both the US and Isael have failed to grasp is that the usual US backed Dictators no longer exist in the ME and they can no longer rely on those dictators suppressing arab public anger. You cannot live in a region and supress the majority. This worse than aparthied behaviour is planned so as to expand the Israeli state beyond internationally recognised borders and all people to return to the homeland. Israel rulers want these violent respsone to justify the land grabs so in this case the dumb Hamas are playing straight into their hands

I support Israel not because I like Israel but rather because I like my freedom in SA. East vrs west is no joke and I am glad that both India & China are both investing in and supporting Israel. Israel is safe... Not only because of US help, but rather because of western civilization and much of the Christain, Hindu, Buddhist, and the rest of us infidels.

      Tony Lapson - 2012-10-25 07:58

It's funny to think that there are people here who support those who threaten to "wipe Israel out" on a regular basis. I think the USA and Israel have every reason to be prepared. The blood thirsty others don't believe in resolve.

      fidel.mgoqi - 2012-10-25 08:36

"Wipe off the map" has in fact become yet another effort by Israel to monopolise the victim status. It is Iran that is daily threatened by Israel and the US with actual military attacks.

      Tony Lapson - 2012-10-25 09:06

I could source multiple articles of their hateful and violent remarks about Israel, even from their local newspapers. Now, can you link me a single source of Israel claiming that they want to destroy their neighbors? I am willing to be swayed if you can show me the Israel that you perceive.

      moses.mabhida.52 - 2012-10-25 09:14

You mean apartheid in Gaza not Israel. I have been there rashida, I have seen how no Jews are allowed to live in Gaza and how Christain numbers have been decimated. The number of Christians is disappearing all over the middle east - only in Israel are the number of Christians increasing... Also number of Israeli Muslims increasing... So when you call a place an apartheid entity please consider facts on the ground before talking rubbish. There is apartheid in Saudi, north Nigeria, Syria, Iran and Gaza... And freedom and democracy in Israel, fact.

      fidel.mgoqi - 2012-10-25 11:05

"I really don't understand why this "wipe off the map" is still an issue," It's some kind of a grief coping mechanism that Israeli supporters have developed. Instead of responding to the issues at hand, they claim victimisation. A head in the sand, diversionary tactic. There's not a single Israeli supporter here who hasn't used that. All the while Israeli cement mixers and bulldozers haven't stopped wiping Palestine off the face of the earth.

      Tony Lapson - 2012-10-25 12:23

Agreed he was misquoted that one time. It doesn't change the general desire for Israel to be eliminated or neutralized. It is not just a victim status, it is a reality... Israel and Jews are not welcome in the area due to past (religious) and current (religious and land) conflicts. They have every right to defend themselves and their people. I still urge you to provide proof that Israel are actually the aggressors. I am open to hearing both sides. My own opinion on the current matter is mostly influenced by general behaviour of each nation, and the remarks they make about each other. I am not just talking about their leaders, but the general population of each nation. Quite frankly, it seems the there is more aggression from Islamic countries than Israel.

      fidel.mgoqi - 2012-10-25 12:57

" Israel and Jews are not welcome in the area due to past (religious) and current (religious and land) conflicts. They have every right to defend themselves and their people." This is false, Jews and Muslims have lived with each other for over millennium, even when Islam was the superpower in the region. It's only after the arrival of the racist European Jews (they brought their racial bigotry from Europe with them as the Semite Jew doesn't look different racially from an Arab, being both Semites), who chased Arabs from their homes that hostilities started, and Arab countries reciprocated by chasing their Jewish population (this ironically benefited the right wing Zionist in Israel when world powers couldn't justify the establishment and sustainance of a state without the required population numbers) They are aggressors because they have continued up to this day (25/10/2012) to steal from and displace Palestinians, and they justify this because of what's written in a book dating 3-4 thousand years ago. There's more noise from the Islamic countries because they are the ones who have been dispossessed. Imagine Afrikaners making more noise (as compared to Africans) about the dispossession of Africans during apartheid.

Is that not cute, Israel and her little bitch, America - practicing hard to impress their corporate masters of greed and destruction. The money spent on this exercise could feed and support a whole lot of people.

      allcoveredinNinjas - 2012-10-25 08:17

Yip and the rockets they are shooting down as the exercise continues would kill many people too. Perhaps if the genocidal death cult members would stop attacking a democratic UN member state then resources could be spent on things other than defence but as the say "Safety First!"

      fidel.mgoqi - 2012-10-25 08:32

"would stop attacking a democratic UN member state" As opposed to say what, a non democratic UN member state, like Yugoslavia, Libya or Iraq?

      tom.guy.37669528 - 2012-10-25 08:43

The attack on USS Liberty shows the true respect Israel has for the US. Those Zionists neo cons have such a huge influence in a country that spends more on military than the rest of the world combined. Scary stuff.

      allcoveredinNinjas - 2012-10-25 08:47

Yes , dictators and tyrants don't hold any kind of equivalency to free democratic states in perticular when they conduct genocide , ethnic cleansing and wage war on the population .

      fidel.mgoqi - 2012-10-25 09:03

No, international law does not allow attacking a country because it does not share Western values, like democracy, etc..!

      moses.mabhida.52 - 2012-10-25 09:21

Uss liberty (a mistake in international water) vrs tens of thousands of Islamic attacks against western interests, democracy, and freedom. When you have a cult that has killed its own brethren to the tune of 35000 in just a few months in syria, I would hate to think what these members of the so called religion of peace would do to an infidel such as myself. When they are done with Israel they will come for me, thus I support Israel on these threads... Even though that support is physically not helpful to Israel.

      bradley.kecskes - 2012-10-25 09:42

      larry.lachman.54 - 2012-10-25 11:59

Fidel, the USA / Nato involvement in Yugoslavia was to stop the genocidal onslaught of caucasian Serbs against Muslims. A little fact that you allude to by mistake, or out of ignorance, as you would not acknowledge this otherwise.

      fidel.mgoqi - 2012-10-25 13:13

Larry, that is what MSM has taught you, and I have been able to read other sources about the true intentions of Nato involvement in Yugoslavia and the so called massacres. Ironically or not, it is Nato bombs that killed more people in that conflict than the allegations against the Serbs. And luckily for the US, they managed to secure themselves another military base, all occurring by accident of course.

  • audrey.sabag - 2012-10-25 07:23

Can all of these people who are crying apartheid Israel, please explain to me what exactly is apartheid Israel? Is it when they allow the Arab Israeli's to have seats in parliament? Is it when they have arab Supreme court Judges in all the courts representing the Arab Israeli's? Or is it when they are given the right to vote freely and without intimidation, or receive government grants or free schooling or free medical????? Yes, sure Israel is the apartheid government.... You wonder why Israel erects walls to protect themselves and keep terrorists out, then get called apartheid oppressors cause they are erecting borders between them and the very same people who they are granting everything for free to. I Dont understand how people can be so closed minded and only believe what rubbish they are fed from news that is barely reporting correcting. Maybe the very same people who are claiming these things should do a little more research as to what is happening over there...

      moses.mabhida.52 - 2012-10-25 09:29

They will not give you an answer because they have not been there like me... They will not give you answer as to not awaken the world to the true apartheid that is taking place in the Arab world against Christians, Hindus, Jews, and Buddhists... From almost slave labour of hindus in Dubai, to 'Muslim only' roads in Saudi, to mass killings of Christians in Nigeria and second grade citizenship of Christians in Gaza, Egypt, Iraq and Iran. Sadly there is still apartheid in this world but it's not in the democratic state of Israel. It's amazing how lies about Israel spread through the shear volume of Muhammad's faithful.

      richard.bosmano - 2012-10-25 16:44

Like the leader of the ACDP Kenneth Meshoe says he grew up under apartheid and Israel is definitely NOT an apartheid state. There's not even a comparison.Israel grants freedom to all. If you have'nt been to Israel please shut your mouths up!

      fidel.mgoqi - 2012-10-25 07:59

      moses.mabhida.52 - 2012-10-25 09:35

Meshoe like all black SouthAfrican who suffered is not confused - he is willing to look above the politically correct idea to hate Israel sponsored by our local Muslim citizens who also faught along side us to end apartheid... But there is no apartheid in Israel, if there was I would be the first to criticize it... Israeli self defense against Islamic extremisem is not apartheid nor is it a crime.

      Tony-Lapson - 2012-10-25 10:01

The perfect example of a "narrowly-defined world" would be a place where religious rule and ancient culture/traditions are more important than trying to understand and ACCEPT that there is another culture on the other side of the world that may do things differently. Some people would rather kill or wipe them out, rather than co-exist and stick to freedom of individual beliefs. I am very inclined to think of one region in particular, just north of Africa.

  • fidel.mgoqi - 2012-10-25 08:37

It is a sign of how much Israeli politics has been corrupted by the 40 years as an occupying power that its supporters here can calmly discuss attacking a state that they are not at war with. The rest of us react with shock and horror to the idea of even discussing it.

      allcoveredinNinjas - 2012-10-25 09:00

Really , since the most efficient attempt at extermintaing a perticular group which cost half the global population was conducted ,when another major power in the regions head of state as well as other high ranking state officials repeatedly call for your destruction , you take notice especially when they deny the last extermination attempt while calling for the next one. Add to this their clandestine attempts as well as program to develop weapons to make this achievable, then yes you would think about neutralising that capability . So after suffering the holocaust (not even talking of the many centuries of pogroms) when someone threatens to destroy you , anyone but especially the jewish people will take them very seriously. Of course the side that talks about attacking the facilities to make this happen is in a far less moral position to the side that calls for it's elimination and that actively seeks to do this.

      fidel.mgoqi - 2012-10-25 09:13

The actual translation from reliable, objective sources was that a belief that Israel would collapse and fade from the pages of history, hence Ahmedinajed reference to Israel being a tiny blip on Persian history. It's interesting that it appears to be the ONLY statement that the neocons can point to as indicative of Iran's "nuclear ambitions." But you also believe that the Persians are suicidal and don't love their country and heritage and wants to see it gone?

      Tony Lapson - 2012-10-25 09:16

You realize that "Persian history" is a lot younger than Israeli history right? There was actually a world before that.

      fidel.mgoqi - 2012-10-25 09:33

It's a blip because it has never featured with any significance in Persian history, not because of how old it is!

      Tony-Lapson - 2012-10-25 09:40

So then, by the same logic, why would you be so determined to "Wipe them off the map" if you can recognize that they were there before? The only answer that can explain the hatred is "Religious and personal", not what is Rightfully yours or theirs.

      fidel.mgoqi - 2012-10-25 09:52

The fact that Ahmadinejad was merely quoting Khomeini suggests that even less weight should have been given to his words, especially since there is a dispute over the precise meaning in English.

All of these quotes are post 2000, when Iran had already been demonised by countless Israeli politicians, in reference to the 1980 speech by Khomenei. Israel has always made threats about Iran's nuclear program as far back as the late 1980s. Were they supposed to keep quite while, they also have a constituency that expects tough talking leadership, like the right wing nutters in Likud.

      fidel.mgoqi - 2012-10-25 10:05

Israel will not survive in its current form and that is a fact, and has nothing to do with the death of Israelis. Israel, in its current state is unsustainable. You cannot maintain a military outpost indefinitely. How long do you think you can force your youth to be killers while their peers in other countries are enjoying their youth. There are countless studies that reveal Israeli youth deserting that country and settling in western Europe (do you own research).

      fort.horseman.7 - 2012-10-25 10:16

Fidel and Tony,my understanding is that Iran places a clear distinction bet Jews and what it percieves as Zionists.God sent Moses to free the chìldren of Israel from Pharoan, why must muslims hate Jews if both believe in the same God.But Iran has a serious gripe with the zionists, who they see as unscrupulous warmongers trying to rape and pillage the worlds mineral resources for greed and power, and i thìnk that they wil find that the buck stops here. Now if the zionists are comouflaged as Jews, then its a Jewish concern not a Muslim.

      Tony-Lapson - 2012-10-25 10:22

Regardless of "economic sustainability", the point is that you would like to see the downfall of Israel. Your use of the words "doom" and "extinction" shows that their demise would be a slight victory for you. Israelis dont share the same mentality about their neighbors. I have done my own research, and those "deserters" that you speak of are escaping a the idea of potential violent actions from surrounding countries, not "Sustainability" issues. They fear imminent attack from those who hate them, and they have the money and opportunity to go and live in a democracy, study to become a professional, and possibly live a peaceful life where they don't have to worry about being attacked.

Spot on horseman, hence in the so called threat statement to "wipe Israel off the map", the word Israel is not mentioned at all, but "Zionist regime", which the right-wing NYT has deceptively and purposefully interpreted to mean "Israel". If people weren't so brainwashed, they'd be able to realise that the world has had all sorts of regimes before, like the Nazi, Soviet, Apartheid, fascist regimes, etc, and this has never meant that the people under those regimes were targeted for genocide. Why is it war talk when the Iranians display their displeasure towards the Zionist regime!

@Tony Panetta to Netanyahu: Israel May Not Survive the Current Arab/Islamic Awakening By Franklin Lamb "In private, according to Washington sources, the atmosphere was quite different. Panetta reportedly made plain that given recent changes among Middle East countries, meaning the Arab Spring and Islamic Awakening, Israel was quickly running out of time. Its only choice was to make peace with the Palestinians and her neighbors or perish." There, Pannetta has mentioned the word "perish", does that mean that he wants that as well. It is reality!

      Tony-Lapson - 2012-10-25 11:47

He used the word "perish" quite rightly so. At any given moment, with Israels situation in the middle of a whole bunch of nations that have avid hatred for them, they could perish (Suffer death, typically in a violent, sudden, or untimely way. Suffer complete ruin or destruction). That is very true, because some people in that region just want to get rid of the "unnatural Israeli creature" that Mr. Ahmadinejad DID in fact describe them as. But imagine Netanyahu said "Palestine will Perish." Then you have a completely different story. But here is a question for you... what would secure peace between Palestinians and Israelis? Palestine would want Israelis to retreat completely out of the region with no true home land. Is that reasonable?

1967 borders, a principle supported by almost everyone, including Israel's ally the US!

      larry.lachman.54 - 2012-10-25 21:03

Problem is Fidel, 1967 borders, as a principle, is not supported by Israel's immediate neighbours, otherwise they would not have gone to war against Israel(and lost) several times, when Israel was positioned well within these borders. Gaza proves this.

This is surprising, and interesting to hear that the US is only concerned about Israel security in that region,Israel has demonstrated its ability AND capability in mass destruction weapons some years back. The endless assaults with those weapons on Palastinians, and the reports that Israel has and its manufacturing nuclear weapons have been ignored by those who claim to be protecting the innocent people, just because the Israelis are regarded as super beings AND HOLY by the US. The way the US is handling these issues is causing a concern. If these are politics of economics then the supper powers are going to take us into third world war and this time there will be no survivors because these are the people who are having those dangerous weapons. The US must not ignore Iran when they say they make NUCLEAR weapons because they feel insecure and want to defend themselves from Israel which makes and posses such weapons. The US must act fair to avoid more problems in future. As much as some countries are allowed and defended for making such weapons, soon there would more countries acting in groups and produce such weapons and the result will be human extinction. what they say today, HUMAN KIND IS GOING TO DESTROY ITSELF AND BRING THE LIFE ON EARTH TO AN END. Please use your science and technology responsibly. To those who claim to know god better, Americans and Israelis should always remember that god never intended us to use our godly given knowledge and intelligence to kill.

      Tony-Lapson - 2012-10-25 10:09

That is true, Israel and USA have both been capable of wiping out entire nations with WMD's for the last 40 years.... So why haven't they yet if they are that "evil"? Don't get me wrong, I agree with many points you have made, specifically about humankind destroying itself, but I guess I am more inclined in understanding and empathizing with the tiny nation of Israels concern over the violent remarks and threats that they receive regularly.

All the sabre rattling is about entrenching and protecting Israel hegemony in the region, supported by the US' "2008 Naval Vessel Transfer Act", which shackles every American president with a legal obligation to ensure that Israel maintains its military dominance over the Middle East. It is designed to assure that Israel’s regional hegemony is legally mandated via Israel’s“Qualitative Military +"Edge” (QME).

Tony, Russia and China, or the ex Soviet Union to be exact! Russia has acted as a counter balance to western aggression. Look at Cuba for instance, and if it weren't for the USSR, the US would have long obliterated that tiny island. Past US Presidents have said "Wipe Cuba off the map!

      Tony-Lapson - 2012-10-25 12:01

It's great that you mention the two nations that are well known for having little regard for human and individual rights. I suppose they are the real heros in this world, and you are clearly excited about it. As for Cuba... the American-Cuban conflict started pre 1900's when Cuba attacked an American Warship... It's not like America said, "I feel like taking out Cuba today," and the valiant russians rushed to save the small island. There was so much inter-politics between all 3 nations that conflict was destined to happen. It has all resulted in absolutely nothing in the end and conflict has died down.

      fidel.mgoqi - 2012-10-25 13:28

"As for Cuba... the American-Cuban conflict started pre 1900's when Cuba attacked an American Warship..." Well this is disputed (false flag) and it was the Spanish crown then that had authority over Cuba, so technically the US fought with Spain, hence the war termed, "the US-Spanish civil war". Still the US couldn't trample all over Cuba, because of Russia.

No matter how strong you are you cannot defy the scriptures,Imam Mehdi will come and defeat the strongest military might ever assembled...Assad in Syria will go,Iran will be neutralised and the next power to come out of the mideast will make the people suffer,at that time Israel will be the only power in mideast and amidst the suffering of women and children Imam Mehdi will rise from the ashes of Damascus and in the ensuing war the super power of that time(nuclear powered) will be defeated.

      larry.lachman.54 - 2012-10-25 21:06

Just laugh warily at the utter idiocy. Mind you, this is the secret mind of Islam, preparing for death. Fidel, you inadvertantly support this fellow in his madness.

@Tony-Lapson I appreciate your comments. It's always good to discuss differences of opinion, rather than simply seeking to dismiss other people's views because they don't happen to conform with one's own preconceived ideas. Thanks, till we meet again!

How would you know, Lesego? You have never been part of a debate on these threads yourself, let alone had a sniff at winning one. Most put up with your incessant irritation like one does with a persistant flea - disdain and revulsion.
