Huntsville - Attorneys for a long-diagnosed mentally ill Texas death row inmate are trying to keep him from execution within days, saying he's so delusional he doesn't even know the correct reason he's about to be put to death.

Scott Penetti is scheduled to be executed on Wednesday for killing his wife's parents in 1992. The 56-year-old inmate's lawyers say the date should be postponed so that Panetti can undergo further psychological testing because they believe it would show that he's mentally unfit to be executed.

The Supreme Court has said inmates must have a rational understanding of why they're being punished.

His lawyers say he believes he's facing execution for trying to preach the Gospel to fellow inmates and prison officials. Courts so far have rejected their arguments.
