Lennox the dog put down after 2-year fight

2012-07-11 16:03

Dublin — A pug-nosed Belfast dog named Lennox, who inspired a two-year legal fight and animal-rights protests on both sides of the Atlantic, has been put to sleep by city officials.

Belfast City Council confirmed the 7-year-old dog was put down on Wednesday after a deadline for legal appeals expired.

Dog wardens deemed the pit bull-type dog to be a public danger and seized him from his owners in April 2010. Northern Ireland's senior appeals court last month upheld two 2011 court rulings that Lennox should be put down.

His owners argued that Lennox was not even a pit bull, never attacked anyone and could be resettled outside Northern Ireland rather than killed. An online Save Lennox petition and social media campaign spurred protests in Belfast and New York seeking his freedom.

What the hell is wrong with this world??????? Imagine the outcry if a human was "put down" because he/she is the wrong race????

      Pulverturm - 2012-07-11 17:27

SICK SICK SICK! Human beings are a blight on this earth!

      Sharon - 2012-07-11 17:30

that happens daily in sunny south africa michelle

      Tommo - 2012-07-11 23:18

The point is, its NOT a human. Its a dog

      godesha - 2012-07-12 06:21

Tommo, to the owners he was not just a dog, but part of their family and they must have loved him if they put up such a fight to keep him alive.

  • leoa.martins - 2012-07-11 16:22

What has this world come to??? So lets euthanise millions of people just because they look dangerous even though they have not harmed anyone!!! If we can do it to animals, why not to humans?

  • adil.smit.5 - 2012-07-11 16:28

Of course it's wrong. The dog has been living with his family for 6 years when a council official showed up and took him. Apparently they felt his nose measurements made him a "pitbull type" and even though DNA tests confirmed he was not a pitbull and he had NEVER attacked or hurt anyone, the BElfast City Council persisted. International dog experts Victoria Stillwell and Dog Whisperer Cesar Milan intervened and a 200 000 strong petition asked that he be spared. The nOrthern Ireland Court said yesterday that the Belfast City Council could send the dog to the US,giving them the freedom to spare him but the Belfast City Council were not open for ANY attempt to save this dog's life. He was killed this morning. Killing a living being because you don't like the way it looks it what racism is all about. And callers to Belfast City Council today were mocked by a receptionist making animal sounds - really shameful.

      mofstok - 2012-07-12 07:42

Welcome to the nanny state of the United Kingdom, where the local council knows what is best for you and society. Bunch of worthless, nearsighted morons.

  • janinekittyb - 2012-07-11 16:37

this is very sad, as owner of two pitties, they are the best dogs in the world. its disgusting to be discrimated against, for human error none the less. RIP Lennox :( Nothing in all the world is more dangerous than sincere ignorance and conscientious stupidity. -- Strength to Love (1963)

  • tevashnee.packery - 2012-07-11 16:43

WTF!!!!!!! The idiots just killed a perfectly beautiful, healthy, innocent creature for what exactly????? Why don’t they line up the monstrous criminal humans and kill them instead of defenceless animals! That was someones pet :(

  • ty.beh - 2012-07-11 16:55

All we asked for was that he be sent to the USA to live. We offered to pay his expenses. They spit in our faces. Now they are making animal sounds to people who call on the phone. All we asked for was human decency. Mercy for the little girl, Brooke, who loves Lennox.

  • donna.m.leonard - 2012-07-11 16:59

The BCC did not do their "duty" as they say---this story of an innocent dog had so many injustices that it still blows my mind that they murdered him!!! Yes murdered him!!! The ignorance and stubbornness of the BCC has definately put Belfast on the map and it's not a pretty picture I might add!! So way to go BCC ---- your turn will come for each and every individual that had a hand in the injustices towards...their will be judgement day & you will be held accountable!! The coldheartedness of the BCC and the judges that upheld their ruling is beyond words!!! RIP Lennox your name will live on---we will make sure of that!!!

      Tommo - 2012-07-11 23:15

Dogs are killed. Humans are murdered. Remember the difference

      delish7564 - 2012-07-12 18:29

Actually Tommo, Humans murder each other and treat other creatures appallingly while dogs give unconditional love, companionship etc regardless of how they are treated. Remember the difference. Give me dogs any day!

  • gareth.perkins.52 - 2012-07-11 17:00

    Fuc* Belfast!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • violet.bossut - 2012-07-11 17:24

What a bunch of pricks Leave it to the stupid Irish.

      victor.tamaranui - 2012-07-12 18:59

Generalization.......Shouldn't to know better after-all Jipo smithers new wife is Irish........Ok , bad example.

  • stadleroux - 2012-07-11 18:35

What was probably even worse for the poor dog than the eventual injection, was the fact that he had most probably been caged and removed from his people for the past two years... This is nanny state behaviour driven to the extreme.

      delish7564 - 2012-07-11 19:08

Couldn't agree with you more. I think it is appalling that so called "officials" can just come into your home and remove a precious member of the family, which, let's face it, dogs are. How dare they! Perhaps someone should take something from them that they love :(. The nanny state is what has messed up the UK and is spreading!!!!

      delish7564 - 2012-07-12 18:41

The dog was kept locked up for the time the case was being fought, his owners were not permitted to see him or even be with him when he was destroyed, could not collect his body so that they could bury him and have been told they will receive his ashes in the post! How cruel can you get not only to the dog but to the family? I know how heartbreaking it was for me to have one of my dogs "put to sleep" but at least my husband and I were both with him as he passed away, he knew we were there for him and that he was loved. My heart goes out to both the family and dog at this traumatic time. Obviously people like Tommo have been deprived of the kind of love and affection you receive from dogs, I feel sorry for him. Yes, this was about a dog, but I would far rather have a 4-legged than a lot of the humans we read about, no comparison!!!!!,

  • gail.formosa - 2012-07-11 18:49

If the dog did not bite anyone after the horrible living conditions he was forced to live in.And you can see the hand on Lennox's head. This is a tragedy of justice.Shame on Belfast

  • zane.blignaut - 2012-07-11 19:18

While millions suffer and starve, we waste valuable resources on a dog named Lennox.... this world has gone mad I tell you.

      Adil Smit - 2012-07-11 19:37

Zane, this is about treating vulnerable elements of society fairly. Human beings can speak out for themselves to some extent. Don't think much money has gone into it but certainly a lot of time and effort.

      victor.tamaranui - 2012-07-12 19:01

The world was sane 5000 years ago....Seems an eternity of Greed and Pathetic Human behaviour based on the almighty Money.

  • carolyn.dewrance - 2012-07-11 19:18

A bunch of bloody Irish butchers, they dont deserve to live either

      Adil Smit - 2012-07-11 19:29

Just for clarity, this is in Northern Ireland which is part of the UK. The Republic of Ireland has got nothing to do with it.

  • Tommo - 2012-07-11 19:44

Lennox is history thank goodness for that. And now if we could concentrate on more pressing human issues please...

      Adil Smit - 2012-07-11 21:09

With a comment like that, kindly exempt yourself from being human.

      adil.smit.5 - 2012-07-11 21:16

and with no photo, name of TOMMO TOO - is your profile real?

      Tommo - 2012-07-11 22:06

@adel. Just grow up and try at least if nothing else to keep to the point at hand. It is after all about a dog.

      Adil Smit - 2012-07-11 23:44

Your profile is fake. And the article is about Lennox, you seem to have missed that vital point.

      Adil Smit - 2012-07-11 23:45

We await your contribution to human rights violations.

      badballie - 2012-07-12 10:38

Would love to meet you TOMMO, I have a syringe with your name on it and would support any effort to put you down. As for your starving humans, they only have themselves to blame and deserve their fate. Also a very "BIG THANK YOU" for reminding me why humans can only be classified as a virus.

  • henriette.m.pretorius - 2012-07-11 21:57

This article doesn't even cover the extent of what happened to this dog. No account of any attacks or aggressive behaviour was even reported. He was taken from his loving home only because he looked like a pit bull. I am so utterly and completely outraged by this, words can not explain the disgust that I feel towards these so called human beings. So I shall stop ranting and leave you with this: "The time will come when man will look upon the murder of animals as they now look upon the murder of men."

  • godesha - 2012-07-12 06:46

And some people like Tommo has no compassion with animals, makes me wonder what compassion he will show for a human.

  • stephen.j.dickson.3 - 2012-07-12 08:12

Now I know why the Irish are known as "the Blacks of Europe" It figures.

      victor.tamaranui - 2012-07-12 19:04

Aahhhh, You show your fascist perspective. Much generalization in that one line of drivel, I suggest the Pic is appropriate
