'Lost' Indian Jews return to Israel

2012-12-24 18:00

Jerusalem - Dozens of Jews who claim to be the descendants of a lost biblical Jewish tribe have immigrated to Israel from their village in north-eastern India.

The Bnei Menashe say they are descended from Jews banished from ancient Israel to India in the eighth century BC

An Israeli chief rabbi recognised them as a lost tribe in 2005 and about 1 700 moved to Israel before the government stopped giving them visas.

Israel recently reversed that policy, agreeing to let the remaining 7 200 Bnei Menashe immigrate. Fifty-three arrived on Monday.

Michael Freund, an Israel-based activist on their behalf, says nearly 300 others will arrive in the coming weeks.

Lhing Lenchonz, 26, arrived with her husband and 8-month-old daughter.

She said that "after waiting for thousands of years, our dream came true."

Quite interesting issues happening here , am sure the lost tribe is ecstatic to be finally going to the promised land

  • ruben.maistry - 2012-12-24 18:36

What made them decide after so many decades to go to Israel? Are they being persecuted in India? Could someone please enlighten me on this mass move.

This is biblical prophesy coming to life in this day and age. This is one of the signs of the times...This again proves the validity of truth, that is " Rhema". : The Return Hundreds, perhaps thousands, of Bible passages predict the return of Israel to the land of Palestine. Here are only two. Ezekiel 20:34 - "I will bring you from the nations and gather you from the countries where you have been scattered -- with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm and with outpoured wrath." Isaiah 11:11-12 NIV - "In that day the Lord will reach out his hand a second time to reclaim the remnant that is left of his people from Assyria, from Lower Egypt, from Upper Egypt, from Cush, from Elam, from Babylonia, from Hamath and from the islands of the sea. He will raise a banner for the nations and gather the exiles of Israel; he will assemble the scattered people of Judah from the four quarters of the earth."

No consolation whatsoever to not so LOST Palestinians who will need to make way to accommodate these so called LOST Jews. Whatever happened to the covenant that Jews made with their God not to return to "their" promised land until the return of their Messiah? Any religion that comes with a land grant is a fraud!

      bill.sonnenberg.1 - 2012-12-24 18:51

      Don't talk rubbish!

      jacob.buys.9 - 2012-12-24 18:57

Actually the lost tribes are Isrealites and not Jews. Jews are decendants of the tribe Juda and did return before Christ was born.

      fidelity.mcoshi - 2012-12-24 18:59

That is a meaningless non-sequitur. Come on, you can do better than that.

      fidelity.mcoshi - 2012-12-24 19:28

Jacob, the Jews are still waiting for the return of "their" Messiah as they do not recognise Christ as the Messiah.

      David - 2012-12-24 20:36

Nah manic, apartheid only lives in your heart. Share the land. Let the Jews have a safe haven.

      David - 2012-12-24 20:52

Fidelity it would be interesting if genetic tests were done on these returning Bnei Menashe. Just maybe they are related to the other Jews ie the ones your ilk like to say were converts from the Khazars. It might just disprove you! But then I guess even conclusive proof wouldn't be enough to soften your heart.

      fidelity.mcoshi - 2012-12-24 21:05

Your point starts with a false assumption, i.e. these Indian Jews have a historical or biblical tie to Israel. 'The most significant mass conversion occurred in the 8th century, in the massive Khazar kingdom between the Black and Caspian seas. The expansion of Judaism from the Caucasus into modern Ukraine created a multiplicity of communities, many of which retreated from the 13th century Mongol invasions into Eastern Europe. There, with Jews from the Slavic lands to the south and from what is now modern Germany, they formed the basis of Yiddish culture' This is a historical fact!

      gaby.hide.3 - 2012-12-24 21:26

Thanks. Explains why so many German and Jewish words are the same.

      David - 2012-12-24 22:01

No, Fidel, the false assumption is that they don't have a historical connection to the land. If they are genetically related to your so called Khazars, it disproves your theory in total. Just like genetics prove that Cohens are all directly descended from the same lineage wether from Iran, Syria, Germany or India and this already dispels your theory.

      KevvyW - 2012-12-25 07:58

What are you talking about ? A False prophet ? ? There is no such thing in the bible - Your thumb lied....

  • ancbasher - 2012-12-24 19:51

Are the descendents of Jesus not amongst them? Didn't he travel to India long ago before he became famous?

      KevvyW - 2012-12-25 08:12

ancbasher - You are insulting, does not seem to have nay respect for other people's line of thought. There is NO Proof for what you are saying, and there never will be. On this Christmas, you insult my Jesus ? ? I declare to you, whatever a man sows, that he will reap....You will reap the fruit of your lips/fingers.

I feel pity for the Palestinians. What the state of Israel is doing to the is far worse than what the whites did to us!

      harry.saunders.7712 - 2012-12-24 23:05

sibusiso, what did the whites do to yUS

      Sibusiso - 2012-12-25 01:34

Harry, they ,upon their arrival here ,granted equality and full rights to the Blacks as enjoyed by whites.Never took over a hectare of land from the Blacks.Happy now?Huh!

Sibusiso, you have a one sided view of both situations. Yes, there are/were problems with the present situation in Israel and apartheid. But the truth is that one cannot have a monochromatic stance. There is a lot of cooperation and reconciliation between Israelis and Arabs than meets the eye in the same way that many whites opposed apartheid and helped to end it. You should learn more about both situations before you pronounce on things that you know very little about. Under the present system people of all faiths can go to their holy places. Under an Islamist Palestine, this will not be possible, holy places would be closed or destroyed, Jews, Christians, Bahais and other people would not be allowed there and be driven out, women would be segregated from men in private and public and public executions will be the order of the day.
