ME: Call for Bill Clinton to mediate

2012-11-18 22:26

Washington - The United States needs to deploy a high-level envoy, like former President Bill Clinton, to help negotiate a peace deal between Israel and the Palestinians, said Senator John McCain on Sunday.

McCain, the ranking Republican on the Senate Armed Services Committee who lost his 2008 presidential bid to President Barack Obama, said Washington needed to show it was serious about wanting peace in the Middle East and sending someone as senior as Clinton would help.

"The United States of America has got to push as hard as we can to resolve this Israeli-Palestinian issue," McCain said on a television programme.

"So many events are hinged on making that process go forward.

"I'd find someone even as high ranking as former President Bill Clinton to go and be the negotiator," McCain said.

"I know he'd hate me for saying that but we need a person of enormous prestige and influence to have these parties sit down together as an honest broker."

In 2000 during his second term as president, Bill Clinton made a high-stakes Middle East peace push that ultimately failed, but he is widely perceived to have credibility with both Israelis and Palestinians.

Escalating

Obama, travelling in Asia, said on Sunday he would prefer not to see an Israeli ground invasion of Gaza but put the onus on Egypt and Turkey to get Hamas to halt cross-border rocket fire.

Obama also warned those in the Middle East who support Palestinian aspirations for statehood that any peace deal would be pushed off "way into the future" if the Gaza conflict escalated.

Like other top US Republicans, McCain said the United States needed to be "as heavily involved as it possibly can" in the latest conflict, which has been escalating in five days of Palestinian rocket attacks on Israel and Israeli air strikes on the Gaza Strip.

But he said he did not know how much influence the Obama administration would have, following failed efforts in 2009 to help bridge differences between Israelis and Palestinians.

"We have a lot of work to do to regain some credibility because we're crumbling all over the Middle East," McCain said.

These israelis just need to shut the hell up, and stop murdering innocent woman and children.

Sorry Mike you clearly have no idea whats going on in the middle east. Hammas have no qualms in setting up their missile sights within crowded residential areas - it's an old tactic to use the civilian population as a shield. Should Isreal simply sit back and accept the attacks, watching its own people being killed because to protect itself and retaliate might kill innocent civilians (yes including woman and children) on the other side? Pay attention.

Israel was created in 1948 from 52% of the land formerly occupied by the Jewish and Palestinian people, and Palestine 43%. Most of the Israeli territory was the Negev Desert. Jerusalem fell into neither territory. Palestinians with their unelected, self-serving neighbors declared war on Israel the very next day. In the 1960's they even invaded Israel twice. Full military invasions. The result: Israel survived and pushed them back, gaining territory in the process. This is the origin of what you wrongly call "stealing land". There have been almost daily attacks by Palestinians, incited by their self-serving unelected backers. Palestinians even teach their children at Kindergarten to attack Israel, rather than be peaceful. Children. Kindergarten. From day one, and even today it's wage war on Israel. Israel defends herself. Yes sometimes going too far, which is unacceptable, but self-defense nonetheless. All that needs to happen is for Palestinians to choose peace side by side with Israel. This is more likely going forward now because the unelected dictators are being removed from power by their people, one by one. They will no longer use the Palestinians for their own internal political ploys.

Two groups of people resented and opposed the creation of an Israeli homeland for the Jewish people after the horrors of World War II, notwithstanding that the amount of land was a tiny, minuscule slither relative to their vast lands, and Jewish people had inhabited that land for millennia. Guess which groups that was, and is. Racist Muslims and White Supremacists.

Why not let Hillary Clinton mediate?

      nick.sailer - 2012-11-18 23:50

Hillary quit before the US elections.

Many reports yesterday of civilian deaths on the Palestinian side. It's time for Israel and Palestine to recognise each other's rights, stop the blaming and stop this.

No disrespect to Bill, but he will fail! There will never be peace in the Mideast until the settlers from Europe accept that they're living on land that was usurped from Palestinian Arabs. Peace will only happen when the European settlers accept Palestine and live alongside their Arab cousins in Palestine under Arab rule. When the settlers regard themselves as Jewish Palestinians peace will prevail!

Now now… that’s beautiful propaganda peanut, sadly none of it is true. The land belonged to the Jews 2000 years before Islam was born, then the Romans controlled the land, then the Ottomans took over, then the British who handed it over to the UN who divided the land between Jews & Muslims, Jews got Israel and Muslims got Jordan (there is no difference between Jordanians and Palestinians FACT). The Arabs went to war. The Arabs told Muslims on the land to leave so they could wipe out the Jews. The Arabs lost the war (Israel did not kick out anyone nor did they start the war) and the rest is history… Keep in mind: The only people ‘kicked out’ were the Jews. who got kicked out of Iran, Iraq, Libya, Morocco, Saudi, Lebanon, Tunisia, Syria and Yemen... peanut, you Muslims lost your return note when the Arab world told you to leave Israel... but you can take up any one of the empty spots the "Jew" left for you anywhere in the countries above. The holy land was never under the control of Islam! thus no land is occupied... learn to share it with the Jews under Israeli democratic law or the Palestinians will continue to suffer... peanut, your not helping a single Palestinian civilian, your only making their life harder.

Peanutcluster, are you not "a settler" too then? Are you going to give your land back to its original inhabitants, the Khoi San?

  • Rashida Patel - 2012-11-19 08:41

Are they crazy ?? Under clintons rule ,half a million iraqi children died .and madeline not so bright said it was worth it ! Sheesh !!

      fred.fraser.12 - 2012-11-19 16:13

Rashida is a racist, uneducated, reactionary Muslims who jumps at any opportunity to lambaste the US. Rashida, FYI: Clinton was President BEFORE George Bush. Hello!

  • peanutcluster - 2012-11-19 08:55

Doberman - a pocket of European settlers with a big stick and powerful friends practicing hegemony in the Arab lands is no different to European settlers in the African lands till colonial era ended. Now matter how you spin it, Israel is a colonial experiment and history is not on the side of the Israeli settlers. The region will not know a day of peace and Israelis will have to live in fear and insecurity. This is what happens when you try to swim against the tide of history!

      moses.mabhida.52 - 2012-11-19 09:53

The Jews are to Israel as the Black are to South Africa. The holy land (1,2% of the Middle Eat) belongs to Jews. the other 98.8% of the Middle East belongs to Muslims. The Jews of Israel have come back from all over the world, some from Poland, Romania and Russia, some from Yemen, Iraq and Egypt... some from Ethiopia, Brazil and China. also do not forget, that there were Jews in the Holy Land right through the 3000 years history... some Jews never left what is present day Israel! In trying to convey the situation you should rather call the Arabs the European settlers because the Jews were there two thousand years before them.

      fred.fraser.12 - 2012-11-19 16:11

You're a hypocrite. When when are you going to give your land back to its original inhabitants?
