London - British police have spent about £767 000 in the search for Madeleine McCann since the toddler went missing in a resort in Portugal in May 2007, figures released on Monday showed.

No trace has been found of the girl, who would have celebrated her 6th birthday in May, and whose fate prompted a massive international police hunt accompanied by a vociferous campaign by her parents, Kate and Gerry McCann.

After Portuguese police and prosecutors closed the case, the McCanns continued their search with the help of private detectives.

Monday's figures showed that police in Leicestershire, the British county from which the McCanns come, spent £196 756 on the case in 2008-2009.

Earlier this year, police gave the figure spent in 2007-2008 as £548 477.

Madeleine disappeared from an apartment in Praia da Luz on the Algarve on May 3 2007. Her parents have set up a fund to assist in the search which has attracted large-scale contributions from businessmen and celebrities.
