Sydney - Australian police on Tuesday charged a man with using a child, thought to be as young as five, to help deal drugs in a Sydney suburb.

The 34-year-old was arrested early on Tuesday in the Woolloomooloo area and charged with a range of drugs offences, New South Wales police said.

Police said they had witnessed the child collecting money for drugs at least three times over the space of six days earlier this month.

The man was charged with several counts of supplying a prohibited drug, and three counts of procuring a child under the age of 16 to take part in the supply of a prohibited drug.

He was due to appear in court later on Tuesday.
