Man charged for atheist post

2012-01-21 14:35

Padang - Indonesian police say a civil servant who posted "God does not exist" on Facebook faces a maximum penalty of five years behind bars for blasphemy.

Thirty-one-year-old Alexander Aan was taken into police custody on Friday after his remarks triggered public outcry in West Sumatra province.

He was attacked by a mob on his way to work.

Indonesia, a predominantly Muslim nation of 240 million, recognises the right to practice five other religions. But atheism is illegal.

Colonel Chairul Azis, police chief in the West Sumatran district of Dharmasraya, says Aan was charged because he used the social networking site to spread beliefs that violate the law.

He says Aan also lied on his job application by claiming he was Muslim.

ROTFLMAO! Will they bring God to court to prove his existence?

      Burtfred - 2012-01-21 16:43

Pascal's Wager is a suggestion posed by the French philosopher, Blaise Pascal that since the existence of God can not be proved (or disproved) through reason, but since in his view there was much to be gained from wagering that God exists (and little to be gained from wagering that God doesn't exist), a rational person should simply wager that God exists and live accordingly. Quoted from Wikipedia.

      Burtfred - 2012-01-22 09:23

@Delusion You are what you think. If that's what you think, that's what you are.

      Pierre - 2012-02-09 11:53

@Irene – Shucks chick-speak is getting complicated. Let me see … rolling on the floor laughing my ass off (Google helped). I don’t think they will like that in Indonesia.

      Hugh - 2012-02-10 09:16

@Delusion, yes often considered it too, but what if Im wrong? Only time will tell right?

  • david.streicher - 2012-01-21 14:54

Atheists beware - Remove Indonesia from your itinerary.

      Pierre - 2012-02-09 12:01

Also watch out when arriving at the airport; they don’t like low-cut burqas, with the upper part of the nose visible.

the God & gods, being only an IDEA, will be removed from our minds for always during 2012. The extraterrestrials who put this controlling idea of God & religion in & over us will now assist to free us from it & their enslavement. This change of stance from the Annunaki since "God-the-Father, Anu, passed over. Welcome to the New Earth!

      david.streicher - 2012-01-21 15:28

Have you being abducted lately and prodded with strange objects in all orifices? never mind the third kind, beware of the fourth..

And when Jesus comes again, we will see a lot of very surprised faces and hear cries of "I didn't know, science said there is no God". I dare those whop claim that there is no God to create life as we know it, create, not clone. Science cannot even predict the weather correctly and yet there are those who would risk their souls for them. The scientific proof of the existence of God lies in the very creation of life.

      Andrew - 2012-01-21 15:38

Please. Your God only created Adam & Eve. So who created the Dinosaurs and everything before that?

      Suki - 2012-01-21 15:40

OK Jan, I dare you the next time you see an amputee to heal him/her through prayer.

      david.streicher - 2012-01-21 16:16

Ja Jan - It will be the end of the ANC when he comes again. ("The ANC will rule until jesus comes")

      Bryn - 2012-01-21 16:38

When you understand why you dismiss all the other possible gods, you will understand why I dismiss yours.

      leon.mason3 - 2012-02-09 14:27

God cant predict the weather either.

      Alcastilian - 2012-02-09 18:45

Will somebody Pleeeeze charge or fire Delusion (and at least William),pretty pleeze,or even better lets pray to our "vengefull" God to at least give them some tension slaps!

      Alfred - 2012-04-19 09:46

@Jan. Not much difference between you and aruan999, you're both just as wacked. By the way Jan, any god that threatens punishment for not being worshipped is a total ahole.

  • Peter - 2012-01-21 15:36

Science will never discover every thing in creation. through science there is already a scrap heap on the moon. Man is distroying the world. Every other creacher has had to adapt to mans distruction.

      Suki - 2012-01-21 15:45

I'm sure you did not complain too much when science offered life saving treatment to a loved one.

      Suki - 2012-01-21 15:47

But I am sure you thanked god and not science afterwards.

      Godfrey - 2012-01-21 18:57

I think you are the victim of brainwashing by a preacher creacher.

  • Sinudeity - 2012-01-21 15:38

What?! So, no freedom of speech in Indonesia then? With that said though, 5 year prison sentence for news24 atheists :P Not for their views, but for their arrogance.

      Sinudeity - 2012-01-21 16:00

Your arrogance is in attacking Christianity, for an article about a Muslim country, when no attacks were launched against you at all.

      Sinudeity - 2012-01-21 16:03

William - But you have to believe in hell to take such threats seriously :P

      Sinudeity - 2012-01-21 16:11

Evolution hardwired religion into the psyche of humans.

      Sinudeity - 2012-01-21 16:18

William - But then again, monogomy isnt an evolutionary trait. But some people are monogomous anyways.

      Sinudeity - 2012-01-21 16:25

Delusion - So, people are abusing religion for their own gains? Reminds me of Jacob "Honorary pastor" Zuma.

      Sinudeity - 2012-01-21 17:29

William - "@Delusion, good post :)" Atheists are known for their circle-jerking :P

  • Andrew - 2012-01-21 15:38

This is absolutely ridiculous. We are all free to believe what we want to believe. Why should some be punished for having a different view regarding religion.

      Paul - 2012-01-21 16:01

Yes ... but there are limits to what is decent to say about each other's beliefs. But beyond laughing off a 'dis-believer', there is no reason to punish him/her. It is now up to their government to PROVE there is/was a God, otherwise they have no case, and they in turn are guilty of an international crime - inhumanity towards thier own citizens.

  • Cracker - 2012-01-21 16:23

Once more the facts speak for themselves. Allow the religious a free hand or to cuddle up to government to conspire to limit our freedoms and the consequences are a given. No prophetic abilities needed. Just a fair knowledge and appreciation of history - including the very recent history of this country - and some insight into the religious mind. If you believe that your deity is the only one and that your salvation depends on your actions for and on behalf of your deity, you will be more than prepared to destroy others and their freedoms. We must not allow the same to happen in this country. Our freedoms and our rights to choose what we like to enjoy must remain sacrosanct. It includes the liberty to explore ideas, argue about them and to debate. Sometimes even just for fun, although the current subject of freedom from religious suppression is not a fun subject. It is dead serious. Literally. Believe what you like but don't impose your ideas and restrictions on others. And don't.....the list is actually quite long. But one has to be realistic and even allow the religious some of their cruel inclinations. Can't eliminate all of them.

      Cracker - 2012-01-21 16:48

In my comment above I said that the facts speak for themselves. They always have and they continue to do so. So, once again, note the following comment from Delusion, above. It is a classic underlining of the facts speak for themselves in this whole argument and the self-bluffing that religionists exhibit here. They must NOT try to sidestep the comment. Here it is: "Delusion - January 21, 2012 at 16:21 William: "We grant you [Kings of Spain and Portugal] by these present documents, with our Apostolic Authority, full and free permission to invade, search out, capture, and subjugate the Saracens and pagans and any other unbelievers and enemies of Christ wherever they may be, as well as their kingdoms, duchies, counties, principalities, and other property [...] and to reduce their persons into perpetual slavery – Pope Nicholas V" I heard the big boss of the Rhema Church, the one and only Ray M (however his surname must be spelled) whose church tries to cuddle up to certain politicians, preach on television about the BIBLE saying that the believers will take the possessions of the unbelievers (heathens of course). He thumped the Bible as he emphasized it that it was not him giving his personal opinion but that god says so and that it is in god's word, the BIBLE. There was not the slightest ambiguity in what he was trying to convey. He and his kind of following were entitled through their deity to take what belongs to the unbelievers. Any surprises about some suspicions?

“If people can be made to believe absurdities, then they can be made to accept atrocities." - Michel Chossudovsky

  • Mthuthuzeli - 2012-01-21 16:47

Organized religion is a sham and a crutch for weakminded people who need strength in numbers. It tells people to go out and stick their noses in other people’s business. The guy running the prayer meeting depends on his congregation blaming themselves for their sins. He knows if he makes them feel bad enough they will hand him most of the money in their pockets in return for the promise of absolution and redemption. People who say they talk to god should be locked up somewhere safe. It absolutely amazes me that people with this level of ignorance are allowed to speak... publicly at that.

  • halkettj - 2012-01-21 17:15

Nobody can force nobody to believe in anything. To me there also is no god. In the begining man invented gods, it was their way of instilling some fantasy into how the world came about.

  • SIMSI.1 - 2012-01-21 17:22

Hats of to Indonesia ... may the Almighty God of all people .. Bless you and keep you ...

      Pdevillet - 2012-01-22 02:36

this country should be taken to the international criminal court for human right abuse

  • SIMSI.1 - 2012-01-21 17:28

@Irene ... not necessary to bring Him to court ... As it is everyone's CHOICE to believe on Him ... Secondly, when you accept Him ... He lives within you and you on Him ... Thirdly, the country has laws which prevent people from Blaspheming each other's beliefs ... Take note each other's legally RECOGNIZED religious beliefs ... ...

      Bryn - 2012-01-21 17:36

Why should anyone be forced to walk on eggshells around religion? The concept of blasphemy is a joke...

      Alfred - 2012-04-19 12:16

I thought blasphemy was actually insulting a god (or prophet or scriptures) not just denying its existence. By the way you keep referring to your god as a him, how can something immaterial, something non biological be a male? Does it have a penis?

  • mike.clery - 2012-01-21 17:35

There's a subtle difference between saying "I don't believe that God exists" and saying "I believe that God does not exist", or more dogmatically "God does not exist".

  • Pdevillet - 2012-01-21 17:53

just give them a gap and they will bring back crucification, burning and all.... just for not believing in some spooks

  • Pdevillet - 2012-01-21 18:16

and by the way there is no god

      Sinudeity - 2012-01-21 18:37

      How do you know?

      Suki - 2012-01-21 18:54

I cannot agree with the "there is no god" statement. I would rather state there is no theist god.

      Sinudeity - 2012-01-21 21:08

Delusion - What about the so-called God-particle? Dark matter? A theoretical concept, that scientists are trying to prove/disprove. You see, scientists dont immediately jump on the 'burden of proof' statement to justify the existence of something.

      Sinudeity - 2012-01-21 22:00

"The discovery of the Higgs Boson particle does not prove or disprove god?" I didnt say it does. But the point is, the HB particle is merely hypothetical. Its pure myth at this stage.

      Sinudeity - 2012-01-21 22:59

Delusion - :P No, only atheists know the difference. Everyone else is stupid. Arrogant atheist 'intellectual' prick.

      Victor - 2012-01-23 09:03

Sinudeity: "Arrogant atheist 'intellectual' prick. " Ad hominem, how original.

  • Pdevillet - 2012-01-21 18:44

  • Dan - 2012-01-22 01:18

Convert to pastafariasm , the flying spaggethi monster is the only god that do not promise vengance and damnation . All honour to him and his only prophet bobby Henderson. With millions, if not thousands, of devout worshippers, the Church of the FSM is widely considered a legitimate religion, even by its opponents—mostly fundamentalist Christians, who have accepted that our God has larger balls than theirs. “” –Bobby Henderson

  • Victor - 2012-01-23 09:01

To everyone supporting Indonesia in this, explain why blasphemy is a problem? Surely if an all-mighty sky-god exists he would not be bothered by the actions of a man? How is this a crime?

  • markus.botha - 2012-02-09 15:07

You can't force a man to follow a specific religion. They are violating his human rights. Millions of people are atheists! Including your truly.
